  1. I had so many rare Blue Note dates on cassette tapes made for me by various friends. I mean really, until the Mosaic box, how else did you hear Tina Brooks "True Blue"? I had so many rare Blue Note dates on cassette tapes made for me by various friends. I mean really, until the Mosaic box, how else did you hear Tina Brooks "True Blue"? I just had a chuckle realizing that the last time I was 'in to' cassettes was at the very start of my time on the inter-webs. Meeting other crazy collectors, I started trading copies of recordings but they had to be on cassette since I didn't actually own a PC or burner. Talk about straddling two worlds!
  2. Well I just may try to recreate them for ya over the holiday weekend.
  3. Bullshit Does this mean that you have a copy of this that you can clearly hear the whole band? On the cassette I have, NHOP's bass overloads the mic in a couple of places, It sounds like his mic level is cranked up too much. However, I don't recall Mobley ever coming through clearly. What does come through is great stuff but I can't get past the crappy sound. I'll have to dig out that cassette (and cassette deck) again. Maybe as the years have worn on I can appreciate it more? I gotta dig out my CDRs too, I don't at all recall NHOP overloading the mic and while Hank is somewhat 'distant' not so much that I couldn't enjoy this rare glimpse of, as Michael points out, Hank really stretching out.
  4. No, more that she played it all mysterious and shit, but some people at the party knew her story, revealed most of her secrets, and then, like Sinatra said to the hooker, "I'm through with you."
  5. I agree with Michael, but would also like him to elaborate.
  6. Late to the party but right on time. Seriously though Thom, I was so pleased that you wanted a download because you always have intriguing things to say, and you didn't disappoint. Would you like me to dig out my earliest BFTs so you can give them a listen too?
  7. That's nicely ignorant. I know no one who blamed Tito for 2011 but he took the fall. And he won two championships that no Boston fan will forget.
  8. Bob @ Uptown mentioned this to me as one that was in the hopper, I will definitely be picking it up. Wish I could say the other two that were also in the production process but I guess y'all will just have to wait.
  9. Gotta love the product description: I guess they deleted "ON BIT TORRENT SITES!"
  10. Joe Nocera was slumming from the Op-Ed page which is his usual haunt. He brings a similar level of ignorance twice a week there.
  11. In virtually all cases there is a huge difference between a 15 year old and his view of 'his' music and a ten year old who happened to enjoy his grandpa's music in the car once.
  12. But he habitually listens to jazz? Do we even know it was jazz that was being played? Is it possible your father had the G-Spot on, or some pseudo jazz like Dave Koz or Boney James?
  13. I think its a fine idea but personally I might give him the widest range of recordings possible - like the Weather Report, Blue Train, and a Basie or Ellington big band. Another option is some sort of really wide ranging comp, to give him a super broad sample of the music. My exposure - after I expressed interest -was through a two volume Columbia Jazz Masterpieces comp. Some I really liked and some not so much but it got me started in a lot of directions. I wouldn't push him too hard though, I'd keep it very laid back. I think a single compilation might be the best thing, then let him tell you what he liked. It almost sounds like you are so excited that he's interested in jazz that you will overwhelm him.
  14. Ron Washington: < blockquote>> We can play bas eball.
  15. Ron Washington: I can't even calculate how much better they are than the pathetic bunch of over-rated douchebags that embarrassed themselves at Arlington this weekend.
  16. Recorded 1980, originally for a Japanese label. Tate sings on two tracks, IIRC, and both are trio, no Stiff.
  17. Thanks to Jeff who can always be counted on for the most wide-ranging BFT possible. He did inspire me to create a new acronym which I hope will catch on (see below) so as Sangrey says, Saul Goode. Track 1: Trumpet had me in mind of Blue Mitchell, off the Last Dance LP but then the guitar came in and I knew that was wrong. Liked the trumpet and piano, the guitar ... not so much. Track 2: A Monk tune to start but I lost interest once he moved away from it. Track 3 (and 4): two ancient tracks that Jeff loves and I can always take or leave. Just not intriguing enough to want to investigate further. Track 5: HAFC DKDC and needless to say, NMCOT. But why go with old acronyms? Here's my new one: IHTTTFTO. I Had to Turn The Fucking Thing Off. :beee: Track 6: WOH! From the awful to the sublime. That organ groove has got to be Charles Earland, but I have to say I have so many of his late-career recordings I can't say where this one comes from. Definitely no Eric Alexander in this band, though. Track 7: Liked this a lot but no clue on the band or vocalist. Track 8: Maybe I'm in a strange listening place right now but this one of those 'edgy' tunes that I might dig but today I am not. Track 9: I like this but something tells me this saxophonist is some post-Trane artist who I normally wouldn't listen to, doing the standards thing, maybe for Venus? Track 11: IHTTTFTO Track 12: Lot of pleasure in this but no clue. Track 13: But where's Ella? I guess I thought of her because I first heard this tune on her last record, which I know is painful listening to most but I kept it and don't hate it, and my first exposure to Armstrong was on their Verve LPs. Track 14: Maybe I'm the only one to think this but I was reminded of that recurring SNL sketch with Will Ferrell and some female cast member, playing and singing for bored students.
  18. Meant to chime in to thank MG for his compilation; its always interesting to read the commentary of the compiler and Allan really puts in a lot of comment. (FWIW I fall more on the Jim R. side of the be-boppin' R&Bers question) And this really was a great example of the "at least one track of a BFT will be something you already own" rule. In my case, its three: The Clifford Jordan, Jimmy Smith, and Jacquet. But frankly most aggravating is how I missed Grady Tate's track. I've only heard his vocals on one LP, singing "Funny Valentine" on one of Sonny Stitt's last records. And I was listening to that disc not a month ago. ARGH. Oh, and I think I need to track down that Arthur Prysock LP.
  19. Supposedly they went after Tazawa too - I guess he wasn't using the slop when he gave up that game winning home run on Tuesday. This kinda summarizes the Jays season to date: And the old knuckler isn't exactly mowing 'em down either. I'd love to see the Jays stay in last place.
  20. The original: First spoof: Not Safe For Work, but in my opinion, funnier spoof:
  21. That's a nice disc. Glad its never been an issue for me.
  22. Maybe he doesn't belong in a baseball town? Or maybe the Rangers let him walk just in time.
