  1. I used to stream some archive sets and got some very nice transfers out of them. They come through very 'hot' so very high signal-to-noise = nice recording despite low bit-rate.
  2. According to the Globe, George 'Boomer' Scott has died. He was 69. Check out his stats here. 3rd in the RoY balloting at age 22, a great sophomore season too, then a pretty damn good peak from his age 26 to age 33 seasons, even more so when you consider the era. And a great fielder, too with 8 Gold Gloves. I loved watching that guy. RIP Boomer.
  3. Gotta say I'm intrigued by the idea of more Conrad Lester. and I have to strongly second the recommendation of the Dream Team and Starting Five; the Junior Parker is straight up blues and well worth hearing as long as you can get past the fact that every second phrase out of Junior's mouth is "everybody say YEAH!"
  4. "Yes" based on the experiences we had in our house and that I had in my parent's house a number of years ago, which I posted about back when.
  5. I think its an open question whether a punishment can be applied for multiple discreet events - purchasing drugs/lying about it or obstructing the investigation by MLB. How did Braun end up with 65 days? I mean, he did accept the penalty so there was no arbitration decision but still ...
  6. I've avoiding it. Tough, er, break.
  7. Brian Lynch.
  8. Excellent. Someone else who has attained enlightenment.
  9. Live at the Living Room is a great LP, if you can find it, MG. Don't think its ever seen a CD reissue though.
  10. Babe's Blues came from the same session, August 13 1961, that produced Hey There! I wouldn't say there is any appreciable difference between the performances on each. I realize for some, a few Three Sounds sessions are enough, for others one session is too much, and for an enlightened few like me and Brad, all of it isn't enough. But its all there is.
  11. This is very distressing, for a variety of reasons. There's a twinge of guilt, because after I left CT for Florida, I hardly ever ordered anything from Sally, preferring local stores in Florida and, eventually, the internet. I always did buy an armful of CDs whenever I visited the folks, though. But still, her complaints about the web feel kinda aimed at me. I thought the writing was on the wall the last time I visited in June 2012 for my father's memorial service so I can't say I am shocked. She said then she was doing OK but had to be stay very lean and mean on inventory. The fact is that, with mom getting ready to move to Florida, I wasn't going to be visiting CT and dropping in at Sally's anymore anyway. But I do really hope that Mom gets herself ready to move before Sally closes her doors for good. Mom keeps putting off the date and I won't fly up there to help her with the drive until she's got a date certain. It might be by the end of August but it was supposed to be the end of May originally. I really want to see Sally one last time but I know I'll be calling her this weekend.
  12. That's why I've never picked up that early Max Roach side.
  13. Possible thought...maybe because live music was so common, being asked to buy a record of what you could go out an hear live seemed kind of a con? I don't think this makes a lot of sense because A. Even at the height of jazz performance opportunities, for jazz fans outside of the major cities, the opportunities weren't quite so commonplace. B. Wouldn't fans appreciate a document of a live performance that they can enjoy anytime rather than a memory to summon?
  14. Was it really necessary to listen twice or did you have no better way to attain a faster walking pace at that moment?
  15. Yeah, you can download the MP3s. At least now I can add a link for sound clips: http://www.amazon.com/Nuestro-Camino-Dupree/dp/B00CLH0EME/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373546858&sr=8-1&keywords=nuestro+camino Groove & Grease, Baby.
  16. Was anyone else inspired to check out the debut recording by Mike Flanigin, our own Soul Stream and his band, Dupree? Jim Alfredson's reference in his last Big John Patton update made me plunk down the cash, even without any song snippets at the website: http://publichifi.bigcartel.com/ And I am damn glad I did. Mike sounds great on B3 and guitarist Jake Langley is a monster, IMHO. Great tunes too, with covers of Tina Brooks' David the King, Horace Silver's Cookin at the Continental, and great originals like Mike's own The Turtle. You can even get it as an 8-Track or vinyl. Give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.
  17. Nice to see someone on the left with a clear-eyed view of why Hostess declared bankruptcy and who (that one union) and what (protecting ridiculous job rules) was to blame. The only thing missing, iirc, is that the leadership negotiated an agreement. Rank and file rejected it, and caused everybody to lose their jobs. If they weren't irredeemable crap, I'd go buy a package of Twinkies now that they are coming back.
  18. Maybe Lindburgers isn't big enough to get consideration but I have to say they're superior to Five Guys and about the same price and if you aren't doing take out its table service instead of paper wrapping and trays. Anyone else a fan? http://lindburgers.com/index.html
  19. The former is the one I pulled the trigger on last night, and I realized after starting the thread that I have the latter, and totally agree with you about it. Thanks for the replies.
