  1. And few can match you for opportunities to find reading material in airplane seatback pockets!
  2. Wow the hits keep on coming. I wonder if Marian will be remembered more for Piano Jazz or for her own work? Both were so very, very good.
  3. Happened to have this in the car so its the first I've listened to in Cedar's memory: Available through Amazon at a nice price, if you don't mind the 'on-demand' manufacturing. Great set of tunes the trio runs through: 1. Bremond's Blues 2. Turquoise 3. Cedar's Blues 4. Midnight Waltz 5. Holy Land 6. Theme For Jobim 7. Dear Ruth 8. The Vision 9. Bolivia 10. Ugetsu http://www.amazon.com/Midnight-Waltz-Cedar-Walton-Trio/dp/B0029NYFFW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377004948&sr=8-3&keywords=midnight+waltz
  4. Oh fuck. Saw him twice with the Ralph Moore edition of Eastern Rebellion, including my only trip to the Vanguard. Great player and I don't know if he truly got all the acclaim his composing deserved. I'll be spinning a lot of music in his memory.
  5. Horrifying story; abuser of steroids, and perhaps relatedly, women. The scumbag was arrested the night before the homicide for assault of his girlfriend and mother of his child but was released with no bail. Killed her the next night, in full view of at least one neighbor, who couldn't stop the brutal slashing and stopped trying to help the victim when Jared Remy slashed at him. Oh, and their four year old was in the apartment at the time of the slaying.
  6. But Muddy said that the blues had a baby named rock 'n' roll.
  7. Really loving the disc, Mike, even more than after the first few spins.
  8. Gainesville ahead of FSU is a bit of a surprise; UF has, in a lot of disciplines, had the greater academic reputation than FSU and Tallahassee made up for it with the party rankings. FSU has got to get its party shit together and regain the upper hand.
  9. Should have mentioned that operating procedure at the start. Its a little better but I still can't see sitting around waiting for a half a dozen frames to come in the mail so you can make a choice. So I am guessing if there are one or two you like but can't commit to yet, you can send 4 or 5 back and get more to try, while keeping the ones that are in the running? Their prices must be a lot better to overcome that entire purchase process, not to mention negating the whole "in about an hour" service. So what is "OP"?
  10. Why? The clinic was located in Miami which is practically a Latin American city anyway. And its been noted that outside of the U.S., most of these drugs are available over the counter, which certainly makes it easier for athletes to obtain them. Its been noted in the past that a lot of PED users, from the 'survey' testing in 2004 through all of the PED-related suspensions, have been Latino. For that matter, Ryan Braun was the first to get suspended and he ain't Latino, so your assertion is wrong to begin with. All of the suspensions announced today are for Latin players.
  11. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1927361678/brian-lynch-emmet-cohen-recording-release?ref=email Brian Lynch has partnered with a former student, pianist Cohen, on a combination duo/quartet date - the quartet with Billy Hart on drums - and I am already in on this. Check out the video, they sound good together.
  12. I was going to mention that there was a banner ad for an eyeglass website at the bottom of the thread - I cannot imagine buying frames online. How can anyone possibly tell what any of those frames look like on themselves? And who wants to pay for a set of frames that may or may not look good and deal with returns/exchanges? I try on a frame, don't quite like it, it goes back. Beyond that we have different opinions of what constitutes acceptable non-square/non-small frames. I wouldn't pick one of those frames to try on if I saw them at the eyeglass retailer. And a grant total of 12 frame options for "Round"??? Beyond that, I completely disagree that there are plenty to choose from.
  13. Maybe I am being naïve but I don't think that will be the case. Mr. Henry will bend over backwards to give the editors and columnists carte blanche to write what they want. And if he doesn't, there's always the Herald.
  14. Its August 5th and with one more win, the Red Sox match last year's total. Pretty impressive turnaround especially since few of the young prospects they want to build with have had an impact yet (the only one, Jose Iglesias, got traded to get Jake Peavy last week). More impressive when you consider that two legit closers hardly had an impact before undergoing major surgeries but I do fear for the bullpen's continued effectiveness. With the trade deadline gone, now's the time for those young arms to step up and have an impact, or I fear they won't maintain their league-leading winning percentage. Still a nice year after last year's epic incompetence and last-place finish.
  15. Maybe this trend away from small/square frames is so incipient that Lenscrafters hasn't gotten the memo yet, but the selection there absolutely sucked. But I'm glad I tried Sam's as the price to get new lenses into old frames at Lenscrafters was $350, and if I had gone that route, it would have been $210 at Sam's. As it was, I found an acceptable frame there and the total was $250. That's 60% of what I had budgeted.
  16. What Tom said.
  17. Well I'm just glad to hear that the trends have reversed a little and I might be able to find something I like, regardless of where I purchase. When I pulled out my old frames, they didn't look all that great for having sat around for two years. Definitely going to price out Lenscrafters then go to Sam's and perhaps Walmart. Thanks to everybody for the replies.
  18. Haven't been schlepping down to Fort Lauderdale for quite a while as the local concert schedule really seemed to suffer in the wake of the mortgage meltdown/collapse. But I just saw at least one concert that I'll want to see: December 14 - Cyrus Chestnut Trio with Russell Malone http://ftlauderdale.jazznearyou.com/event_detail.php?id=502569#.Ufu8QJ3D_L8 Kenny Garrett is coming in January too but its Chestnut with Malone that I'm excited about.
  19. I'm heading to the local Lenscrafters eye doctor to get my prescription updated this weekend but it dawned on me I'm not obligated to buy the lenses at that store, where they love to upsell you. Plus, I'm very much inclined to have the new prescription put into an old frame, because I absolutely hate the trend in eyewear toward smaller/squared-off frames. So does anyone have experience with pricing differences between Lenscrafters, Walmart and Sam's Club? Is there another national chain other than Lenscrafters that I might do better at? My corrective needs are definitely more expensive than most, since I switched to bi-focals and the whole "in about an hour" thing isn't an option anymore. So I'm very curious about the pricing at Sam's Club, for one. As always, thanks in advance. (Now I'm reminded of the only decent joke Ellen DeGeneres ever said (this was back when she was pretending to be straight): I had to break up with my boyfriend. He's an optometrist, and every time we'd make love he'd say "better this way? Or better this way? Better this way? Or this way?"
  20. As you saw on the answer's thread you really did a nice job on this one, Thom. Thanks for the comments, and I'm particularly glad you liked the Lefty Edwards track. Barely qualifies as "forgotten" but the man had skills.
