  1. Do many people care about this music? I really thought that the first tranche of recordings would elicit a response that was a little more ... robust, at least in terms of numbers. Do you like Paul Quinichette? According to Discogs he recorded only twice between 1960 and his death in 1984. Phil Schaap helped keep him working and here are 14 recordings never before heard of the Vice Pres. (And the Jazz Masters Trio is Sammy Price, Jo Jones and Quinichette - can't wait to hear those.) https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?search_type=advance&transliteration_status=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&f[description_source_search_facet_sms][]=Reel-to-reel&keywords[]=paul+quinichette&title_text[]=&resource_description[]=&indexes[]=&transcript[]=&supplemental_file[]=&collection_title[]=&op[]=&type_of_search[]=wildcard&type_of_field_selector[]=wildcard&sort=title_ss+asc&search_field=advanced&commit=Search I guess mileage really does vary.
  2. Ben Webster Tribute with Buddy Tate and Earle Warren among others ... nearly two hours: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/130129?u=t&keywords[]=ben webster&keywords[]= An hour of Howard McGhee with Sonny Redd on tenor: https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/collections/2137/collection_resources/131116
  3. If you like the musicians who played at the West End and captured on these reels, you could listen every day and not hear it all.
  4. https://aviary.library.vanderbilt.edu/catalog?current_flock=false&f[collection_id_is][]=2137&f[description_source_search_facet_sms][]=Reel-to-reel&myresources=0&request_is_xhr=false&search_field=advanced&search_type=advance&sort=title_ss+asc&user_ip=173.168.23.136 I have been waiting so long for something to appear on the Vanderbilt "Aviary" page (I've been in contact with the head librarian and had my doubts when they would get moving) and on a whim decided to check the site and lo and behold ... just a bit of the reels that were digitized earlier this year. George Kelly, the Countsmen, at least four Percy France shows, Paul Quinnichette, Hal Singer, Howard McGhee with Sonny Redd, three complete "WKCR Benefit" broadcasts, really too many to even fathom. And this is just a first tranche. This needs to be shouted from the rooftops so spread the word if you can! (The above search should bring up new uploads as it is keyed to "reel to reel" source.)
  5. Sally White (Sally's Place, Westport CT) would open up a promo copy and play it, then sell it to me for $8 instead of full boat on the list price. She was a fantastic lady and store owner with more jazz crammed into a space about the size of my living room than you can imagine.
  6. Only RSD release I ever lined up for purchasing. 👍 But then again I am the Gene Harris Fanatic. Green Smilie here.
  7. OTOH if he chases people out for violating the rules, you can bet his stock doesn't ever wander far from where he wants it.
  8. What an asshole, I am surprised that it even gets 1.9 stars. I am sure every single person on this forum who buys vinyl has found something of tremendous value (to them) that they had no idea existed, either browsing a brick and mortar or browsing online listings somewhere. And is it my bleary eyes or are there 500,000 pieces of vinyl and not a polybag in sight?
  9. In effect paying twice for dinner, if you eat elsewhere and are obligated to buy an entree during the set?
  10. How much Vanguard material wasn't issued on CD back in the 90s/2000s? I know the issue policy was haphazard with different dates being combined and shitte like that but I am wondering how much is "new". That will determine whether I open up the wallet for that set.
  11. I guess those outrageous prices are needed to cover the rent and the musician fees. If the family home in CT were still ours, I still wouldn't be going to Smoke, I don't think. Funny that he mentions the West End Gate ... I guess he moved there in the brief time that it existed. Of course, it was the West End for 20+ years before that, The Uptown Home For Swing run by Phil Schaap.
  12. Wondering how fans view the ASB these days? As a kid I watched the game religiously but now, and even pre-tie game, couldn't really be made to care. For the homer competition I think I watched one or two and that was it. I really view this week as an opportunity to get to bed earlier every single night. Like 9:30 at the latest instead of 10 or a bit past. Sort of like a west coast trip for the Sox.
  13. Well the day went as I hoped with the added bonus of the Yankees blowing the win after a big comeback in the top of the ninth. If it's any consolation, Verdugo probably makes that mistake of breaking in about once every two years. Bad timing for Yankee fans.
  14. Yeah, I am counting on the Sox continuing their Sunday dominance (1 loss on Sunday all season) plus facing another righty to go into the break strong. And hoping the O's do pull out the last game, to keep things tight in the division. Heading into the second half I guess if you have to play the Dodgers on the road, this is a good time to do it with all of their injuries. Losing to the Tigers with a four run lead in the 8th was brutal.

  16. Red Sox have tied the Braves for the league lead in shutouts, and three have come in the last seven days, two with Kutter Crawford as the starter. His cumulative line against the Yankees and Royals: 14 IP (on an average of 82 pitches per game) 6 hits 1 BB 8 K His WHIP in three July starts is 0.50.
  17. So sad ...
  18. Those are not hints, they are passive/aggressive taunts.
  19. Definitely shocked that the Cubs came to Baltimore and swept them, including back to back shut outs. With the Yanks finishing the first half in Baltimore, it works well for the Sox in that one team in front of them has to lose but I should be more worried about the Royals coming in to the Fens. They have three strong starters lined up including a lefty and lefties are kryptonite to this team's offense most of the time. Fingers crossed that they keep it going for three more. 18-7 since June 12 and the opposite of the Yanks, having done no worse than splits in series since early June.
  20. They are in a restaurant and he says this? I am still not getting your retooling.
  21. Your setup makes no sense if she replies to the suggestion of 69 by naming a menu dish, if she is the frustrated one. She knows what 69 is then. You need both to be inexperienced which is why I rewrote it that way.
  22. I wasn't sure the dry cleaner twist made sense the same way that "69" or "#69" does in context of someone who works at a Chinese restaurant.
  23. I would tell it this way: Two life long friends emigrated from China to the US, and one started a dry cleaning business and the other opened a Chinese restaurant. They had traditional values and so when the time came, the two men decided that the daughter of the restauranteur would marry the son of the dry cleaner. On their wedding night there was a bit of fumbling hesitancy, and the daughter, having been told by her mother that a good Chinese wife would do anything in bed for her husband so she told him, "honey, I love you and will do anything you want to do ... what is it you want?" He said sheepishly "I want ... 69?" Now she looks sheepish and says "... you want beef with brocolli?" Alternate punch line (I think its funny but will understand if you say it doesn't really work): Switch the genders and she says "i want ... 69" and he looks confused and says: "You want Fluff/Fold/Press Same Day?"
  24. Not bad GA but when I use it I gotta make some alterations to the set up.
  25. And here is your update: The innocent CD envelope made it to Ybor City yesterday, which is supposed to be last stop before my Post Office in Plant City and my mailbox. So where is it this morning? A completely wrong post office which is getting ready to put it on some truck for a delivery to god knows where. Or maybe a return to Ybor City and a do-over. I said it 9 years ago it deserves repeating yet again: THE USPS SUCKS.
