Cool, Allen! I see what happened - you posted about those choices in a different thread than the one about this project specifically and that's how I missed it. Since I didn't send the 45 to you, I should get some sort of audio credit, too - I did the manual pop/click removal on those two.

Looking forward to the list since I still don't know which Baby Face 45 you used. Do I get a mention in the acknowledgments?

Well Murray losing clears things out a little more for Roger. It will be cool if next year he is going for four straight Slams. Wouldn't be in a single calendar year but four straight is pretty rare.

Clifford Brown Complete Quebec Jazz Session

B-T is a technology that allows peer-to-peer file transfers in a unique way - you don't just receive files (music or movies typically) with one other person but as part of a "swarm", that is you could get a half a megabyte from one peer, and another half a megabyte from another - and the B-T software you use puts it all together in the right order. When encoded as FLAC files, the music is compressed but not "lossy" and will sound exactly like it sounded originally. It even recognizes if a download is incomplete and furnishes you with the missing bits. Simultaneously, you are uploading bits and pieces from what you have received to other members of the "swarm". So there is no central server that hosts files, as the early music sharing sites did. Dime, AKA dimeadozen, allows B-T uploads that are non-commercial and not specifically disallowed by either the artist or the venue. There are other sites that freely share copyrighted material including things like Chuck's reissues, current releases and current movies. -
How can you expect Gorts to remember a thing like that? When everyone worships at the Hoffman altar, you just assume everything gets done by an act of divine intervention.

Well you might have a shot at the Angels with seven left against them. Injuries might be taking too much of a toll, who knows. Neither team looks very good; an argument can be made that the Red Sox have the advantage in the final 25 games: 15 at home, 10 on the road; of the ten on the road, seven are against Baltimore and the Royals and three with the Yankees. There are three at home against the Angels and three against the Rays who have lost Pena for the year. On the other hand, the rotation remains more or less a joke. They are "skipping" Wakefield and possibly planning to use him once every ten games. Even if he pitches OK and helps them reach the playoffs, what use will he be? Critical start for Byrd, to find out if his second start was just a bad one or closer to the reality of his skills. And Matsu-Sucka was so bad he's making another rehab start. Beckett was a little better but hardly dominant against Chicago on Sunday. Its just ugly. Dreaming of reaching the playoffs when they have no legitimate chance to advance with their starting pitching.

Perhaps but its certainly interesting that things like the Brownie tapes come out after they appear on Dime. Same thing with the Harold Land at The Cellar recordings that we got from DEEP originally. They circulate among collectors, someone throws them up on Dime, and then all of a sudden they've got a "new" "rare live recording". I'd say its more likely they are taking from Dime and finding paying customers among those fans who live a in a non-BT world, particularly particularly when you consider their other well-recognized business practices. -

At least some of this circulates on some Bit-Torrent sites now and then or in trades between collectors. What I've heard, the sound is pretty bad. I'll bet that Andorran label snatched it off a B-T site and is now trying to make money off of it. -
Its OK, not worth $80, and I am pretty sure there is a Collectables CD out there - maybe paired with a different session?

Got a root canal on my two front teeth when I was young as a result of a malicious act by a snot-nosed "friend" - it was a rainy day, so recess was indoors in the auditorium. I was chasing the other kids, or something, and one of them came up behind me, grabbed my ankles, and yanked. My face came down, mouth open, on the hardwood floor, and broke my front two teeth. My recollection of the procedure was no big deal. Can't comment on the price as I was a kid and on Dad's insurance policy. The settlement of our lawsuit eventually paid for about two and a half years of college.

Yeah, and she hasn't said anything yet either.

There's no question he'll be drafted but his spot in the draft will suffer for not having a big final season - or any season. He'll help himself when he works out at the draft combine but with unguaranteed contracts in the NFL, signing bonuses are the big thing, and second or third round picks get less than players taken in the first round.

Nothing special but since its the unofficial end of summer, I thought it would be nice to actually fire up the grill for some barbecue chicken. I expect though that my wife will be very pleased when she comes home from her Mom's tomorrow morning - I spent most of today doing an over-and-above normal housecleaning, including mopping the floors and doing something she mentioned wanting to do when she has the time, emptying the kitchen shelves and cleaning them. I just love surprising her with things like that.

Going in I thought it was bad luck for Venus to get Clijsters in her draw. Glad to see her pull it out, anything is better than a Williams sister advancing. Can we get Martina Hingis to return? Or would she have to serve her positive test for cocaine suspension first?

Only if Manuel doesn't make a change for the playoffs. And don't managers "manage differently" come October? If they leave Lidge as closer and he blows a game and the FC defense, then Manuel should be fired.

I agree with the last thing Jack said, that Silveto label release, with no vocals, is the best of the lot. I bought the Silver 'N' series a long time ago and its been about that long since I listened. Did dig a good portion of them other than Voices but I tend to go back to the classic quintet recordings for a Horace fix. I should revisit these BN releases that marked the end of Blue Note's continuous operation.

Why? The Sox are relying on 38 year old Paul Byrd. He recorded seven outs tonight while allowing seven runs, all earned, on ten hits. Which is more likely going forward, this Byrd or the one that shut out the Jays, a team that has quit on their season? The Sox are so desperate to keep Tazawa out of the rotation (he gave up ten runs to Chicago last start, and has given up another five tonight), they are sending Wakefield out five days after a cortisone shot. He needs back surgery, and will probably be that much closer to getting it done after tomorrow (and if he hurts himself, or just sucks, who is left in the bullpen after tonight's 2 1/3 performance by Byrd?). Their fondest wish is that Dice-K return, and that asshat threw over 40 pitches to record three outs against Double-A competition in his last rehab start. If you do catch the Angels, I expect the Angels to hold us off. Then I may get my fondest wish, an Anaheim annihilation of NY to keep their streak of Division Series losses intact. Life may not be so bad after all. And tonight is why I was so thrilled with Thursday's win. Because with the Orioles playing the Rangers, and Byrd and Wakefield starting the series against the White Sox, I saw this lead getting slimmer and slimmer. Now it will be two games - if not for last night, its down to one game.

I just heard an interesting stat: Papi and Manny both took about 50 games off, voluntarily or involuntarily. Ortiz has hit six more homers and has 28 more ribbies.

Which means, if the Red Sox get lucky and reach the playoffs and take care of the AL West champion and the Yankees take care of the Tigers (I wouldn't want to face Verlander twice in a short series), the deciding factor in who represents the AL might be that extra game at Yankee stadium. I am surprised though that no one thinks this Yankee team isn't really much different than the other Yankee teams of the century - plenty of hitting, not enough pitching, and when they face teams that can do both, they'll be in trouble. I mean, yeah, they're killing bad teams right now - and of course they beat a not-so-bad team in Boston in back-to-back series - but will the bats be as good in October against Detroit, or Boston/L.A.? Then there are the starters - Pettitte is better than anyone could have hoped, so that's a big plus. But Sabathia has been terrible in the post-season, and Burnett and Chamberlain are complete toss-ups whether they dominate or stink. And if anyone only pitches 5 or 5+ innings, that soft bullpen will have a big challenge. Probably their biggest advantage is that in about half a season's time, the starters figured out how to pitch in that ballpark, and the hitters are still feasting on those who don't have that experience.

Well, smooth jazz has pretty clear roots in soul jazz - some of Stanley's late 60s albums have music that prefigures smooth. Yeah but is that formally reflected in Pandora's methods of choosing music? Does a Roy Eldredge station play some Dizzy, because one was a significant influence on the other? Whenever I listen to Pandora and I click on the "why was this played" link (or whatever its called) I get something about "saxophone solo" or "medium tempo" or some such shit, nothing about influences from the distant past. If anything, late 60s Stanley Turrentine might be played on a smooth jazz station. If that's the way Pandora works. Dan - on the Stanley Turrentine station, David Sanborn's lush version of "Come Rain or Come Shine" (which I wouldn't necessarily characterize as smooth jazz) just came up. Why was this played? "Based on what you've told us so far, we're playing this track because it features smooth jazz infleunces, a leisurely tempo, tenor sax head, a tenor sax solo and a horn ensemble." Similar songs: "You Are too Beautiful" (Lockjaw), "Don't Follow the Crowd" (Gary Smulyan), Stan's Mood (Getz) Interesting. I haven't let Pandora program anything for me in a long while, but if I did, I would quickly teach it to nuke playing any of Mr. T's smooth jazz descendants.

So don't be a Leering Larry. I notice there is a DB Blindfold test with Charles McPherson, I wonder if he'll be as tough as LD was (and I presume it will get published at some point, just as the JT Before & After took place at a festival and was subsequently published). If I were going, I think I'd be most interested in that Soul Jazz for the 21st Century group.
