  1. This CANNOT fucking be happening. 10-7, bases loaded, nobody out, potential winning run at the plate. Can the "best" bullpen in the majors blow a 9 run lead in the space of fewer than four outs?
  2. Now I'm really fucking worried. They have a runner thrown out at the plate in the top of the eighth, and the Orioles load the bases with no one out. 10-1 game in the seventh and they allow Baltimore to bring the tying the run to the plate in the eighth. If they fuck this away, I won't sleep tonight.
  3. Jesus Christ! Masterson sailing along into the seventh, 10-1 and now its FUCKING 10-6!
  4. There's some terrible luck for Smoltz. Sox score 9 runs for him, he's sailing along, only 52 pitches through four innings, 3 hits, one walk, one run and the rains come in Baltimore as he finishes his warm-up pitches for the bottom of the fifth. You just know that one year since his last win or no, there's no way Tito will risk anything by sending him out for another inning once this rain stops. At least he had a much better start than the first one.
  5. "Senera" "Senera" "Senera" Whoever the hell she is. One thing is likely - with the Williams sisters, a match up in the final rarely means exciting or competitive tennis. Meanwhile, I feel kind of stupid to admit this but I was somewhat surprised to realize they had installed lights with the roof over Centre Court. I kind of assumed that the translucent covering was designed to let the natural light in while keeping the rain out. Isn't it inevitable now for night sessions to be scheduled?
  6. If I weren't such a greedy bastard, I'd take this to heart:
  7. Al made me next to go. He looked positively gaunt.
  8. Seven shut out innings from Lester means that since Smoltz far-from-great season debut, three Red Sox starters have won by going six or seven innings without allowing any runs, and the other pitcher was a six-inning, two earned runs allowed, hard-luck loser. Starters ERA 0.69, 17-1 strikeout to walk ratio. I'll be ecstatic if Smoltz keeps it up tomorrow.
  9. Seems kind of foolish but if her divorce settlement was big enough, maybe she isn't interested in paying the lawyers to pursue a claim that may not fly in the end.
  10. Apparently it was heart disease, not a hematoma. Way too young to go but if you gotta go, doing it in your sleep seems best.
  11. I saw Roy Haynes' Charlie Parker band in Fort Lauderdale a few years ago and at the end of the first set, he lined up the musicians to introduce themselves. Nicholas Payton said his name was Chuck Mangione.
  12. Has the roof even been used yet? From what I've seen, its not a terrible looking solution to the problem, even if it messes big time with "tradition". I really missed the debate about doing it - was it more or less controversial than when they added lights to Wrigley?
  13. The guy has a strikeout to walk ratio of 1. A WHIP over 1.4. When your starters allow two runs in three games, you really ought to sweep. In fact, I was even more infuriated when I saw the final score. You see, I prefer not to watch the final out of aggravating losses, so when Ortiz grounded out and Youkilis was hung up, I figured it was over. Only later did I learn that the Braves blew the rundown and that Youk scored on a Varitek single. That's really fucking bad. And to top it off, the Yankees stopped losing (look at the truly crappy team they played to understand why) so the Sox lose two games in the standing by failing to complete a sweep in back-to-back series. In fact, they finished 11-7 in interleague play, with four missed chances to sweep! With the Rays making a move and the Yankees not about to go away, those are missed opportunities that could haunt.
  14. Yes but I don't understand the pot of water. They are steaming Barbie? They should be roasting her over the open flame.
  15. Sorry its off-center but I did the best I could with the scanner. Woody and Tyrone, from Horace Silver's autobiography. No other info found.
  16. Me three, GA and RDK. Hearing that he was hit in the head by carry-on bags when his flight blew tires on landing makes me really wonder whether this is similar to the Natasha Richardson ski accident in which immediate medical attention might have saved his life.
  17. Just please cool off the Yanks this week!
  18. What the fuck are you looking at? Drew doesn't even project to those numbers. He's barely ahead of Ortiz, and Ortiz took two of the first three months off. Wake on the other hand - what would you say if I told you his next start would break a tie for most starts in a Red Sox uniform (with Clemens) or that, assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff here that he could exceed Clemens and Cy Young by getting his 193rd career Red Sox victory next season? Did you see his performance yesterday? He's doing a helluva fine job. OTOH, I am motherfucking pissed at the way they fuck away three straight opportunities to get sweeps against crappy teams. Yeah, Hanson is supposed to be a stud - in the fucking future. He ain't Cy Young yet, and has barely shown anything to justify the hype. Until he fucking pitches against us. I'd like to dream that I've spoken too soon with Varitek standing on second with a hustle double, but I harbor no illusions.
  19. The NYT had an article about his finances that was a little less negative than that WSJ piece. They pointed out too that with the renewed sales of his music and the potential value of his image (how long before there's an MJ plate and an MJ gold coin?) the estate has tremendous potential for income streams, while at the same time, Michael's out-of-control spending, which put him in the financial mess in the first place, is over. Much lower expenses, big jump in revenue and the potential for more = a lot of money for everyone, from parents to siblings to children. If they aren't too money-grubbing, and considering what happened after James Brown died, I wouldn't count on it. Like Chuck said, a huge payday for lawyers is coming up.
  20. I think the published date is wrong. I discovered it in the Arts & Leisure preview page for tomorrow's paper.
  21. The Phils could stick with what they have and when they get healthy, cruise into the playoffs, where anything can happen. They are still the class of that division. I think I'll take credit for saying that the Red Sox could afford to give Ortiz the month of June to see if he figures it out or continues his epic slump. 7 homers at better than a one in seven AB rate, OPS over 1.0, and he's hit those homers off of just about every pitch that was flummoxing him before - mid-90s fastball from Burnett - lands in the CF bleachers. Change-up from that Nats pitcher Thursday - pummeled. Fastball in from Jurggens last night - driven twenty rows deep in right field. PAPI IS BACK!!!!* *and now there is no need to over-pay for a bat.
  22. I was at a McDonald's outside of Orlando when I heard a Dexter Gordon Blue Note track.
