  1. My first thought is a couple of Flip Phillips releases but they don't actually fit your time frame: Live at the 1993 Floating Jazz Festival (Chiaroscuro) Swing is the Thing (Verve)
  2. Driving home from Tampa, we stopped in a McDonald's in Orlando for a late dinner. To my absolute astonishment, the debut recording of "Watermelon Man" was on while we walked in, and while we ate our food, a Dexter BN recording came on.
  3. I haven't seen it yet so I can't say that my opinion applies, but when Federer is serving to his usual standards, on a hard court, with consistent first serves, he's exceptionally tough to beat. He lost serve at least twice in the first set, and that's not like him at all. Maybe he loses the set in a tie-break anyway. But I'll bet that Federer most regrets his service problems.
  4. Now that I've read the press coverage, I am especially ticked off that it seems apparent Federer lost due to his serve deserting him. 51% on first serves? All of those double faults? Makes this loss even more annoying. Guess I'll watch up to the fifth set - it sure sounds as though it wasn't very competitive and knowing the outcome, I'd rather watch the moronic Super Bowl pre-game.
  5. Doesn't UPS have standard insurance of like $100? That should defray the loss. Probably like USPS, he'd have to do the claim though. Is a broken circuit board likely to happen without outside damage? My guess is that he's scamming you but I don't really know.
  6. Is there a need to discuss his music at this point? Well, geez, I guess not. Admins, please lock all threads about musician's musics. Or should we just limit it to Keith Jarrett, whom we all should have made up our minds definitively by now and should just keep it to ourselves? Don't be foolish. Certain people produce polar opposite reactions that have consumed millions if not billions of pixels. Jarrett and Wynton are the leading examples. And even then, no one is preventing musical discussion. If someone wants to start a thread to pick apart Jarrett's classical influences, have at it. I am fairly certain that Dave James isn't the sort who will chime in with "where did he get the moans and groans from?"
  7. Do you see much discussion of his music in this thread after the initial post? Was the article supposed to spark discussion? Or was it more likely to confirm that dastardly opinion "he's a pretentious twat"? I didn't see a post that's supposed to spark a musical discussion, and if you want to read nothing but positive views of Jarrett, perhaps keithjarrett.com has a discussion board. But if you think the moderators on AAJ, Harlem.org or the Hoffman forums are tough, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
  8. Was there a soundtrack release to Pumping Iron?
  9. MG said exactly how I feel.
  10. I don't much care for his sound or his conception. I often think he kills the groove of tunes he plays on, for example, on "Blues and the Abstract Truth." While I give him a chance, I often just turn him off. Having said that, I don't post on Dolphy threads about how much I dislike him. I simply sidestep that thread. I wish others would do the same with Jarrett threads. I thought we're all grown-ups here - no one is hurt reading contrary views about their favorite musicians. No one should have to bite their tongue about a subject they want to comment on. Come on, Dan. The tone, and the comments, are the same in every Jarrett thread. They don't leave room for people who do like his music to discuss. It's the equivalent of farting in a crowded room - it drives everyone out. Being grown-up also implies self-restraint. Number one, I see a lot of restrained comments here. Even Dave James gives credit where its due and says he owns some Jarrett. Number two, is there a need to discuss his music at this point? He is what he is. You like it or your don't. You find his attitude and behavior annoying or you don't care. You find his vocalizing annoying or you tune it our or think it adds something. You have to admit the man inspires as disparate responses as possible, its almost Wynton-esque. Its also impossible to have a simple discussion about Wynton's music, either. You like it or you don't; you find him so personally objectionable that you have no interest; you think he gets a bum rap. I still don't see how commentary from anyone prevents people who do like his music to discuss it.

  12. Actually, I sort of am tired of them. Or at least hoping for another revealing glimpse into the Albertson Files of Forgotten Yet Revealing Correspondence.
  13. Well, Tek or Boras did well in one regard - the original offer was 5 million for 2009, with a five million dollar team option for 2010, 3 million dollar player option. Theo relented and agreed to incentives in the event that Tek uses the player option, if he starts more than 80 games, he starts to earn incentives that could get his contract up to 5 million. But I have a feeling that if they cut ties after 2009, Tek won't take the player option, he'll go somewhere else. It would certainly suck if he took the player option, stunk worse, and had to be released. No team wants to do that with their captain, which is why he got this offer in the first place. They really did what they could to keep him, once they knew that Boras would never get a 4/50 million dollar deal like Posada. Anyway - the important thing is that we aren't entrusting what could be an extraordinary pitching staff (if everything goes right including the guys coming off injuries) to a young catcher who needs a lot of on-the-job training. And we didn't give in to the outrageous demands of Texas or (to a lesser extent), the D-Backs. So we keep all of the youngsters, and we'll start the season with Tek's gritty intangibles and his tremendous ability to put down a "1" almost every time.
  14. Number one, I'd respond: Did you burn the CD? Did you use a blank CD-R to do so? Than it is a CD-R! A CD is professionally manufactured in a pressing plant through a different process. I'd go beyond that and tell him he's a thief and a liar, but that's just me. I don't suffer people like this gladly. But since you are escalating it to a complaint, how about sharing his user ID so that we can see his listings?
  15. Jon, to expand on my suggestions: Junior Parker - Junior's Blues: the Duke Recordings, Vol.1 - MCA Junior Parker - Backtracking: the Duke Recordings, Vol.2 - MCA Junior Parker - The Mercury Recordings - Collectables Jimmy McCracklin - there are a couple of Ace reissues of his late 40s - early 50s recordings for Modern Also look for I Had To Get With It - The Best of the Imperial and Minit Years Lowell Fulson - I know you have The Tramp, so for similar stuff you can look for the Tramp Years on Ace or a two-fer called Tramp/Soul. For his earlier material, there are hard to find Chess compilations (easier if you are interested in vinyl) as well as another Ace titled The Early Kent years. Its the latter that I play the most. Freddie King - the three Very Best of on Collectables are essential, but any comp that focuses on the Federal years is a start. Best of the Shelter Years covers the latter part of his career when the recordings leaned more towards rock. Still not bad. Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets: Hard to pick out a favorite, every release I've heard has had its pleasures. Sam Myers - there's mostly only one Sam Myers CD as a leader, but its easy to find - Coming From the Old School, on Electro-Fi.
  16. Jon, is it only jazz comments you are looking for? Because while I'm glad to see so many Three Sounds recordings, I think its time to add some Lowell Fulson, B.B. King, Albert King, Freddie King, Junior Parker and Jimmy McCracklin. Also Anson Funderburgh with Sammy Myers. But that's only because I've been listening to them so much, I think everyone should listen to them too.
  17. IMDB says she made one appearance in the role of "Rich Woman" during season 4 of Taxi.
  18. I just submitted a complaint on eBay - some seller with nothing up but CDRs of live recordings of blues artists like Sue Foley and Anson Funderburgh. It astounds me that people have the gall to just blatantly violate the law as well as eBay rules. And yet the guy has a feedback rating over 500, and just a single buyer posted a negative, that he never said it was a CDR of a bootleg. Everyone else thinks its f-ing fantastic what he sells. And all of them are auctions, not even buy-it-now. So he makes incredible profit if someone gets in a bidding war because they think its the only copy. I couldn't help myself - I sent a "Question" to the seller and asked him what right he has to sell these and told him he's a thief. But with 500+ feedbacks, you know that eBay won't do a damn thing about the listing. Anyone have contact info for Anson Funderburgh, Sue Foley or Snooks Eaglin, or their management? I'd love to make sure they know, just like on Dime, eBay is supposed to respect the wishes of rights holders.
  19. You say you DVR'd it? I'm not saying a word then.
  20. That's why I am curious about the original listing - was this an auction that was bid up to $30 or a buy-it-now?
  21. Somehow I completely missed a Mosaic Select that I should have offered, so here goes: Bob Brookmeyer - $28 including Media Mail shipping to US addresses - foreign shipping will be quoted. - SOLD And let's throw in the remaining LP facsimiles, the first three have OBIs, prices also include shipping via Media Mail to US addresses, foreign shipping to be quoted: Lou Donaldson, The Natural Soul (JRVG) $9 Johnny Griffin, JG (Japanese Cadet, with funky split cover like the original) $8 Stanley Turrentine with the Three Sounds, Blue Hour (JRVG) $9 Oscar Peterson Trio + One Clark Terry (Mercury Japan) $7 Paypal, money orders, checks accepted.
  22. Thanks for posting this, Paul. I've had my eye on that Ace compilation for a while and it was interesting to read his daughter's memories of those times.
  23. I am sure he has violated eBay rules for selling an unauthorized copy of an item. Personally, I'd challenge him directly on his belief that he has a right to sell a CDR of anything, and then I'd give him negative feedback, a warning to beware that he is selling CDRs, not original items, and has no right to do so. Can you post a link to his auctions, or his username? I'd like to see some of his listings.
  24. But I'm already bleeding! Hey! Who's the barber here?
