  1. I may have written too quickly, Peter. I was saying that Carter and Hodges and those they influenced were far afield from "tough" altos. Personally I think of direct links to Bird also being disqualifying for the sort of "toughness" that I am referencing so I wouldn't necessarily go with Jackie Mac but since I acquiesced to Sonny Criss, hey, why not.
  2. Woh. All good wishes to Donald Harrison. As for Criss I haven't thought of overtly bop-based altos as tough, but in his case I would probably agree with you.
  3. Does this mean you would extend the (pretty standard) definition of tough tenors to any free/avant player? Does it not lose its meaning at some point?
  4. You know I love Charles Williams but as good as he is on blues he isn't where I'm at on the concept. Crawford ... obviously great on blues but again ... maybe too sweet in tone? My first instinct when I saw your post was Jeez how could I forget Hank Crawford but as I think of it .. not so sure. Not getting this at all ... too avant for me.
  5. Trying to let a discussion start before I drop a name. He's not well known from what I can see but he has a small discography.
  6. I think we know what is referred to as "Tough Tenors" (separate from the album by Lockjaw and Griff, though it certainly fits) ... think Buddy Tate, Fathead, Arnett Cobb. But does anyone play a "tough" alto? I think of the influence of Bird, Benny Carter, Hodges and hesitate to think of anyone. Well, until yesterday when I listened to something newly acquired and said "that's a tough ... alto!" Comments/thoughts suggestions appreciated.
  7. The other Clifford Jordans are easily recommended. As is the Norris Turney.
  8. Much here to feel embarrassed about not knowing ... Fathead, Edwards and Clay especially. Will be re-listening to a few if not more than a few. Thanks.
  9. I missed all this discussion when it happened but discovered over the weekend how much Willene Barton kicked MF-ing ass. So much that I decided to spring for the EP plus a 45 on this label from recordbyemail, not this one, one that followed: The There She Blows LP is available as a d/l on Amazon for $6. And I sprung for a CD named Jazz Sisters, on the very off hand chance that its the same group that Barton played with in the 70s/early 80s. Absolutely no other info could be gleaned that I could find.
  10. This Red Sox fan has been sick to death of watching Nick Pivetta labor on the mound but the fact is that the rotting corpse of Cory Kluber has no business being in a major league uniform whatsoever. I hope to GOD they wise up and he is off the roster before the end of June.
  11. I thought Ain't Misbehavin' myself.
  12. Not my scene but big congratulations! What is the derivation of "singularity codex"?
  13. I don't know about total rave - reviewer said the second half was a lot of cataloguing of gigs and tours and other things. But the first half sounds like a humdinger with his Vietnam experience. And I think one can be both horrified at the way he was sent to Vietnam while also feeling as if anyone in the army should be able to read the room and not mess with Francis Scott Key or Sousa in his arrangements.
  14. He not only wants a political discussion but is the one who mentions "woke" and accuses people of being supporters of the current governor of Florida.
  15. The shit-stirrer deleted his posts and announced his departure - then came back for more. I am only asking him to have the integrity to do what he promised. He wants to continue to shit-stir, have at it.
  16. You're the only person who brought up "Woke", not to mention the Governor of the state of Florida. My recommendation: When you have a hissy fit and delete all your own comments on a thread, you forfeit the right to come back and start adding new, idiotic comments. You said you don't belong here. So stay away.
  17. Sonny is recorded on cassette, watching an episode of a TV show? That sounds absurd but on the other hand, since the tape was apparently given him, it seems easy to conclude that he didn't care for the performance and therefore the cassette could be used again .... for audio of him watching TV. My head hurts.
  18. Feldman ought to turn in his Detective Badge.
  19. I am confused ... is the reality of a second saxophone completely ignored in these expansive liners? And this, on the "Jazz Detective" label? That's too funny.
  20. You are saying the tape received had been written over, and that was what got digitized?
  21. Could you formally dismiss my two weak-ass guesses? One has since been ID'd but I don't think the other one has yet.
  22. Sorry to hear this Kevin. When you are ready I hope you do tell us about her.
  23. Well I did owe Big Al a listen ... just wish I had a different reaction than Thom's. Afraid this didn't hit the spot, no it did not. What happened to the greeeeaaasse, Big Al?
  24. Well we all know I am only good at compiling BFTs, not reacting to others but I will throw out two guesses: 11 - Red Holloway. 13 - Scott Hamilton. Otherwise, I really enjoyed #2, and in general, things perked up for me starting with #8 and continuing until the girl singer kinda stopped it dead in its tracks. (I did like 4-6 as well.) I have this nagging feeling that 9 and 11 and maybe 14 are more recent, adept efforts to recreate an era by musicians I don't know. Overall, an enjoyable break in the work day and I hope you get some more action on this one.
  25. You are not a remotely serious person who should have quit while he was so far behind. It is remarkable to consider that no one has expressed an ounce of support for your assertion of 'sexism' as the determining factor in Mosaic's releases over the past 40 years. You might reconsider your views but instead you embarrass yourself every single time you post on this thread.
