Seeing Houston Person live a couple of weeks ago has only confirmed how much I enjoy his playing. So, I did an ebay search and discovered that he appears in the late 80s release, "Leon Thomas Blues Band" and I am wondering if anyone has heard this. AMG calls it a straight up blues album, so I am sure Houston sounds great, but I hesitate because of who the leader is. AMG says that there's no yodelling heard and that its Leon's take on the Big Joe Turner school of blues belting, but can anyone confirm? Thanks!

The problem with your attitude, Matt, is that it implies that if there were black members expressing their opinions, those opinions are somehow more valid and correct, simply because they're expressed by a black person. Its utterly bogus, and I would hope that deep down you know it is. What would happen if a black guy showed up here to start telling us that Kenny G isn't a pentatonic fairy fucker but is in fact a great jazz musician? Are we all supposed to revise our opinion of the Gee Whiz? You yourself say that "black opinion ... at least it would make sense."

I wasn't in a hurry to send you the Bubba side but now I think I am going to have to test your theory by sending you Soul Symphony. Cool! Is that the one w/Oliver Nelson? No, it was the Nelson Orchestra on Coldwater Flat, but I could throw that in, too. Soul Symphony was a Monk Higgins, and IMO, taken on its original intents and purposes, not nearly so bad as you expect. (Actually, if you expect loads of Gene Harris, its pretty darn good). How's that for a ringing endorsement?

Back at the Blue Note Bulletin Board, I used the screen name "Gene Harris Fanatic" so you can guess how I feel about the Three Sounds. And believe me, there are others here who are fans.

I'm with Jazz Kat-the best part of the season are the auditions ... but I do tend to watch the later episodes, if there are compelling voices in the mix. After William Hung's experience last year, you have to figure there are people out there hoping to replicate his "fame". But I think the difference is, those people are coldy calculating how to get their fifteen minutes, and what was strangely appealing about Hung was the fact that he was totally sincere.

I think the Dex and Sonny Stitt were the only complete takes recorded in that aborted session. We can probably guess why rejected takes got rejected, Dave: sloppy heads and/or uninspired solos. Given the alternates that have come out of the vaults in the past 20 or 30 years, I think its safe to say that if there are takes that are musically OK, just bettered in the issued take, then we've heard them by now, and the rejected takes really don't deserve a public hearing.

Rejected tunes are not part of any Mosaic set, and if you look at any Mosaic Set discography, you will see that rejected tunes are still listed because they are part of the historical record of the recording session in question. If you look at your Mosaic booklet you might notice that the CD contents are listed separately from the discography.
