  1. A tip o the trousers to bentsy and the babe thread. (deletion at the moderator's discretion) I'll give you a dollar if you make it your avatar.
  2. Lon, its Steven Wright. *********************** And the winner is .... John Heffron. I for one was definitely disappointed. I thought Alonzo's wit was far superior. I noticed one of the non-finalists say something about Heffron's "energy level" but frankly I don't need comics running around the stage, doing judo chops and making noises into the mic. Give me a guy who just straight out tells funny jokes. But I do think this was a big step forward for him and we'll definitely see more of him.
  3. I had it in my Favorites; last time I looked it was no more, so I deleted it.
  4. Couldn't vote til I got home to count, but the numbers are decidedly middling (in this crowd): 20 Box Sets 2 Selects Burns of two OOP sets acquired from friendly patrons of this here board.
  5. As Brownie says above, I don't think this guy wants it to be resolved. Definitely a screw or two or three loose, if you ask me!
  6. Folks, Mailings at the beginning of next week will be difficult for me. Therefore, all discs will be shipped Friday morning. I don't think this will interfere with Marcus' BFT as he is closer and closer to posting answers, and since my BFT is two discs, people need more time to live with it before the discussions can start anyway. Thanks to all who have signed up, I hope the music and the theme are intriguing. We'll see soon enough.
  7. Street Singer is in, but I have no contact from Tooter.
  8. I would therefore second my vote for Stanley Turrentine Wildly innovative? No (so?). But I can pick him out every time, just takes a note or two (or three). I agree with you, Eric! Dmitry-your idea is a good one, maybe with a little twist: "Artists who's tones aren't that distinctive but we love them anyway"
  9. I hesitate to point out that I asked for "single most recognizable tone". Who is the absolute schitt for you when it comes to recognizable tone?
  10. Musicians are supposed to work for years on developing their own sound as well as their own conception. Some truly succeed, but a lot (IMO) fail, often because they are too enthralled with idols (a lot of Bird clones come to mind here-really, even if Stitt did develop independently, how easy is it to distinguish his tone from Parker's?) So my question is, who have/had the absolute most recognizable "sound" on their instrument? Who could you recognize in the fewest notes? It occurs to me that Miles might be it for fewest notes; my other choice would be Dexter Gordon, but you'd have to hear a phrase before realizing its Dex, with Miles, you might recognize him in even fewer notes.
  11. Anyone else watching this show? There are definite similarities between this and Idol, but I think the overall talent level is much higher, and the entertainment factor is much greater. Some real talent among the contenders, and at least there's greater variation in approach to the craft, as opposed to the melisma infected "singing" on Idol. I didn't watch the whole season, but I have to say that Alonzo Bodden is a terrific talent and should definitely win the vote. I also had a soft spot for the cro-magnon dude, Jay London. And the Sicilian girl was easy on the eyes. Not sure if she was funny or not, I just noticed she was easy on the eyes.
  12. Tooter, again, no email received.
  13. Sounds good to me. I'm ready to ship at a "Moment's Notice" as it were.
  14. Tooter, Not a problem, but I haven't received an email yet, so you might try again. dangould@hotmail.com
  15. Not too long ago I got to this in my A-to-Z safari and its definitely a winner.
  16. Thanks, Claude. Is it safe to assume though that at the worst case, if I borrowed an LP and burned at high speed, and it turned out my CD player had troubles, I could take that burn and re-burn at a lower speed? I mean, if the errors aren't on the disc but in the playback of the disc by certain machines, I assume I can always reburn from the master copy at a lower speed.
  17. Update: The list stands at 25. Thanks to those who offered but at present I am prepared to handle all burning and shipping. I shipped to far flung members dutchmanx, White Lightning, and Marcus Oliviera on Monday; European shipments will be made pending the continued slowing of the discussion thread, with American shipments to follow. Further signups still accepted!
  18. OK, I understand aversion to "higher" burn speeds, but as technology races ahead, have you noticed how the possible speeds keep heading up? So my question is, aside from a generalized fear of audio errors or disc failures, is there any compelling (i.e., actual, demonstrable failure rate) reason to keep burning audio CDs at, say, no higher than 12x, when 48x would make my burning time oh so much shorter?
  19. Don't take this the wrong way, Dmitry but she looks like an unhappy Czarina, about to send someone to Siberia.
  20. I'll have to check my dinged up LP box to see just how nice the notes were, but I seem to recall a lot of words and pictures, like this was a real "deluxe" Roulette issue, the kind of verbiage that would make for a super-thick CD insert. That's why I'd be surprised if they reproduce the whole thing. Then again, it is the centennial, so how can they not?
  21. The Count Basie Story was one of those box set things, with a real nice booklet, if I recall correctly. I wonder if the booklet will be fully reproduced or not-I'd be surprised if it is. And if I remember correctly, these were, essentially, covers of the Decca hits by the Basie band of the Roulette years, which makes it kind of cool on its own terms.
  22. I don't think Shrdlu is remotely "respectful" in the way he regards the beliefs of anyone who doesn't 100% agree with his personal beliefs. In fact, he's downright disrespectful.
  23. Tony, you might want to track down the Magical Trio dates, with Ray Brown and either Elvin or Blakey behind the kit.
  24. Koko is cool, but I'd much rather be called T-Bone.
  25. Any more willing souls?
