I figured this post-festival report needed a new thread ... I am very pleased to report that Organissimo knocked the Clearwater Jazz Festival on its collective ass! I was able to attend mostly because a close friend recently moved to St. Petersburg, affording me a place to crash. He's not a jazz fan but believe me, by the time the set was over and we headed to the CD Purchase/Autograph booth, he was pulling out his wallet so that I could get a signed CD and I could give him my old copy of "Waiting for the Sisters" I managed to attract Jim's attention during set-up so we had a moment to introduce ourselves before the show, and when I saw the "tropical" shirt Jim had picked for the gig, I had to tell him I was going to have to give him some shit over that .... but then the band hit, and the only thing I could say about the shirt afterwards was: The crowd was even louder than Jim's shirt, and that's saying something! Many highlights-too many to list, but Ron Blake on tenor was fabulous (though the first tune was marred by his tenor mike not being turned on, we were close enough to realize that what we could hear was actually coming through *over* the speakers, not through them. ) The best tune (and biggest surprise) featured Jim on vocals on the Ray Charles classic "I'm A Fool For You". This really knocked out the people near us-there was a large African American family, bobbing their heads and just lapping it up, and when Jim started testifying, it was like a Pentacostal church-"Say it!" (Oh, and by the way, Joe told me afterwards that Jim added the tune to their setlist just a week earlier!!) A nice-sized crowd awaited the guys at the autograph/CD tent, including one older man-probably mid-50s, who said that he loved "Jimmy Smith Goes To Washington" and that he hadn't heard organ like that since he heard Smith in his heyday. And then things really got enjoyable when I got a chance to chat with Joe and Randy, two of the finest, friendliest sorts you'll ever meet, and after a picture was taken of me with all four musicians, Jim got a hold of one of the festival poo-bahs and landed hospitality badges for us so that we got to hang backstage, enjoying the free food and great company of these superlative individuals. And it may not be over yet, as the boys are currently planning to stay through today (Sunday) to catch Eric Alexander/David Hazeltine and then Herbie's Trio, so hopefully we will hook up again and hang out some more. Jim had loads of pictures taken so hopefully sometime next week you'll see many of them right here. And hopefully this great opportunity and tremendous performance will help these guys break through and get the attention and success they deserve so much. Great show, guys, and I'm damn glad I met ya! B)

I think it would be gratifying to the test-givers if people post which artist/album they have purchased or, perhaps, are on the search for, or have requested burns if it is long out of print item. I realize people post things like "I want this" in the discussion thread, but who's actually gone out and gotten it?
-
I can beat that-I got PM notifications over twenty four hours after they arrived.

Happiest of Happy's, my pinko friend!

Jim is 100% correct. Berigan, your head remains firmly implanted in your ass. Who gave up smoked hits that happened to luckily land in someone's glove in the seventh? THAT'S THE WHOLE FUCKING CLUE YOU NEED. IF PEDRO PITCHES A PERFECT SEVENTH WITH MORE WEAK-ASS FLY BALLS, ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY HE SHOULD GO OUT THERE FOR THE 8TH. But he didn't. Little says Pedro was the best pitcher on the staff at that moment and that's a pathetic crock of fucking shit. TIMLIN HAD AN ERA OF ZERO. WILLIAMSON WOULD HAVE HAD AN ERA OF ZERO EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT HE GAVE UP A SINGLE, NO-BIG-WHOOP SOLO JACK TO A PINCH-HITTER IN A THREE RUN GAME BACK IN BOSTON. AND FUCK THE LITTLE FISTED BLOOP. IN SUCCESSION, JETER, WILLIAMS AND MATSUI CRUSHED PEDRO'S PITCHES.

Berigan get your head out of your ass. It wasn't Pedro. It was Little! You are hereby invited to join all the Yankee fans and EAT SHITANDDIE

and bring some of that prime latte stuff y'all are poundin' down all the time. I've always wanted to try me some of that ...
-
From your lips to God's ears, my man! Won't make this any easier to take, but at least it will mean we Yankee haters will have a Winter of Steinbrenner's Discontent to look forward to.
-
Good deal, and it looks like some new names, too! I think its way cool that we have got this thing up and running, that people step up to help out and that everyone has such a good time doing it. Bravo to everyone! Long may the Discs O' Mystery be circulated!
-
So what was the final number of burns? It looks like we came back down from my stratsopheric 30+ Actually, a steady 20-25 participants is probably easily handled by the test-giver, meaning less need for assistance, outside of the the US/Non-US distribution.

Well, I am not going to get any closer to the truth and won't have time to try, so here goes: 1. Nice tune, very familiar but I have no clue, while the bass doesn't sound right, I wondered if it could be Ray Brown when he was playing with Monty Alexander. 3.5 stars. 2. Nother excellent 3.5 star track, I'm going to go counter-intuitive and say, "not Bags". 3. This one I kept going back and forth between Miles and Sweets Edison. I might be wrong of course (hell, I probably am wrong) but I felt like I didn't recognize the tenor as any of Miles' partners (then again, I missed Trane on Dr. J's test, so really, what the heck do I know?) so I went back to Sweets and am going to say Sweets and Zoot. Another 4 star track. 4. If I am not mistaken, I got this from Good Mr. Rowan, so I will keep it to myself. 5. My notes say mid-50s, for some reason but I am probably wrong. I dug it alot though. 6. Nice but no clue. Liked the bass solo a lot. 7. Nice but no clue. 8. ditto 9. ditto 10. ditto 11. Ditto. I know that there is no theme here, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that he actually did stumble onto a theme-Songs Dan Will Dig 12. Didn't do much for me. There goes the theme 13. I know this song but I have no urge to go figuring it out, and anyway, I don't want to spoil it for everyone else. 14. No clue. 15. did nothing for me. I prefer my girl singers to sound more like girls. 16. Another one I recognize and know and its killing me not to name it but ... I just turned 38 and you know how its the memory that's first to go. Thanks once again to the esteemed Mr. Rowan who has put together a terrific disc. Hard, but really quite nice overall with very, very few misses for me and lots of tunes that were easily three or four stars.

You're completely wrong. If this were June or July when the bullpen was the Gas Can Gang, then yes, by all means, let Pedro pitch. 8th inning against Tampa Bay? Pedro all the way. But everyone in that bullpen was pitching to their absolute best level of the season. The bullpen ERA was barely over 1, for fucking God's sake! Every game we won went 8th inning, Timlin, 9th inning, Williamson, and absolutely no damage was done to either one of them except for the harmless solo homer Williamson gave up with a three run lead in game 4. And Embree is very tough on lefties (hell, who got Giambi out with the winning run at second?). It is inexcusable and unforgiveable to think that Pedro has earned any right to stay in the game. He's been babied the entire year, and now they keep him in? He was NOT the best pitcher on that team by the time the 8th inning came around. And yes, Posada's hit was a flare, but what about Matsui or Jeter? Those balls were clobbered, and they got clobbered in the seventh, too, except that they were hit at people. The writing was on the wall and there was never a goddamn reason in the world to leave Pedro in after the seventh. And absolutely never a goddamn reason in the world to leave him in after he got into any sort of trouble. GRADY LITTLE IS A FUCKING MORON WHO SHOULD RETURN TO THE OBSCURITY HE RICHLY DESERVES.

Oops. my bad. But I'm not the Pooh-person my wife is, to me it looked like Tony saying "tastes GGGGREEEEAAAATTTT!"
-
You missed it when it was "live". It was a still photo of the two goobers and Tony The Frosted Flakes Tiger bounds in and grabs Roy in his mouth. Don't know why it got screwed up, but I'm glad I showed it to my wife before it did.

What Brad said. This is 100%, no fucking doubt about it, Grady Fucking Little's fault. Counting the number of times he should have taken Pedro out is like counting the number of times the Sox went to two strikes in Game Six of the '86 World Series. 1. Before the 8th inning started. 2. When he realized how many lefties were coming to the plate after Jeter. 3. After Williams' hit made it 5-3. 4. Etcetera, etcetera, AD FUCKING NAUSEUM. Grady Little should keep a tape of this game handy for the rest of his worthless life, so that when his children's children ask why he never managed in the major leagues again, he can cue up the 8th inning. The Yankees should vote Grady Little a full fucking World Series share. Yankee fans are cordially, respectfully and sincerely invited to EAT SHITANDDIE

Brad, Let's just say that Mrs. Gould is working (and despite the fact that she's a Sox fan too, she is glad she is) and the dog will be given the opportunity to stay as far away from me as possible. I'm not worried about sharp objects, but I will refrain from eating anything during the game. The last time that happened, during the A's series, I ended up discovering just how much of a splotch an apple will leave when it explodes off the wall. I'm kidding. Maybe.

Same here ... it gets funnier everytime I see it! Thanks for the laugh, Chris, on this dark day in Cubbie Land.

Just stumbled across one, from the Byrd/Watkins Transition Sessions: "Little Rock Getaway" by Joe Sullivan

Brad, I put fate third in the list because there's nothing else you can use to describe that ill-fated foul pop up. But I do NOT blame fate for the final result. The Cubs had their chances and didn't perform. You can compare Beckett and Willis to Prior and Wood when either one of them put up the results that Wood and Prior have. Willis for one often looked like a high Double A pitcher late in the season and in the play-offs. Let's see them match Wood or Prior before we announce them their equals.
-
I disagree. Clement and Zambrano are the equal of every Marlins starter except Beckett. Properly managed, Prior and Wood would make the difference in a seven game series against anyone. In fact, if the Cubs had won game six, everyone would be saying how they're in such great shape, with Wood to start game 1 with plenty of rest and Prior ready to go for game 2. A world championship was laid out there for the Cubs, but Baker, the error by the shortstop, and fate were against them. In that order. As far as talent goes, the Cubs will reach the World Series with this same lineup, give or take a reliever or two, long before the Marlins ever do. Take that to the bank.
-
I disagree, Brad. The Marlins won game seven largely because of managing. Just as he left Prior out too long in game six, Baker left Wood out too long in game seven, while McKeon had little patience and got pitchers out of there before they could do too much damage to the cause. Where the heck was Clement or Zambrano? Certainly Clement should have been the very first guy out of the pen-he had what, three days rest, and threw a beauty in Game four? Some pitchers start on three days rest!

http://www.memorylanerecords.com is giving a 50% discount on all purchases of $100 or more, through November 15, through the website only. Not sure how I got on their list, and looking the stock over they aren't cheap, but 50% off certainly will bring their prices into the more-than-acceptable area, if not better. Use this code at shipping to get the discount: L1934Nne First one I noticed that has me wondering is ADDERLEY, CANNONBALL CHILD'S INTRODUCTION TO JAZZ, A on Wonderland. Even for $24 it would have to be really special, so I'm more curious about this one than interested. Anyway, happy searching, I'm sure there are a few gems that will add up to $100.

Listened yesterday, a very fine comp., but extremely hard. Tunes were recognized if not identified and I have an idea or two about players but not a single "gimme". So, I'll probably give it another close listen and then start the festivities on Friday, or else wait til Monday and give it a third listen on the road to Clearwater, where I plan to see a great band, you might have heard of them, Organissimo!

Obscure Organ Dates that are available on cd
Dan Gould replied to undergroundagent's topic in Recommendations
I'll second Brownie's call. I got my copy of "Amen" from the Groove in LP form, and for some reason I want to say that they've gotten other copies, maybe its been reissued somewhere? -
Jim, The one in response to mine, or was there a later one? I plan to make my way to the stage, come hell or highwater, so hopefully we'll at least get to say howdy and chat for a bit, maybe grab a bite to eat, although if the Sox win tonite, I got an appointment I gotta make at 8 pm! See ya Saturday!
