Benny Powell, Coast to Coast on Trident, Powell with an LA group (Herman Riley, Andy Simpkins, Gildo Mahones, Donald Bailey and then with a New York group (Cliff Jordan, Vernel Fournier, Mickey Tucker and Ray Drummond) an Argo LP I've seen on Ebay, Bonnie Graham, Brown Gal an Eddie Higgins LP, live in concert on the Cape with a trio of trumpeters A really oddball LP by Dick Hyman, AMG pretty much pans it, its called Sweet Sweet Soul and it features Hyman on piano, organ and clavinette, overdubbed, doing tunes like Soul Man, Chain of Fools and Sittin on the Dock of the Bay! For $5 I figured what the hey. And the true piece de resistance, a piece I now see that the AMG calls a true collector's item: Phil Urso, Taking Sides, on Spinster Records, Eddie Higgins is on this, that's why I noticed it, but so is ... Allen Eager. And it was sealed and next to nothin'! I done good!

Yeah, it seems like a really cool service. We've already put 25 DVDs in the que, and we have a lit of at least another 25 with a minimum of searching. I really like the idea of setting things up and knowing that flicks we want to see will automatically start arriving as we receive, watch and return. But I wonder if I need to change the password so I can maintain some control over what comes when ...

Last night my wife and I went to the local Blockbuster and when I couldn't find the one movie I was looking for-"The Taking of Pelham One Two Three"-I suddenly remembered that I had read something about a website called Netflix. Basically, it works like this: $20 monthly fee but you can cancel anytime Make a list of the DVDs you want to rent, as many as you want (I think) They send the first three to you Keep them as long as you want, but when you return one, the next one is sent, so you are perpetually getting the films you want Postage is free both ways We pretty much jumped on board last night, but I'm wondering if anyone else has experience with these folks. I think I read that the company is still privately held and either making a profit or very close to one. What concerns me about the longevity of the service is that, in order to make money, your business plan has to assume that people *don't* over-use the service so that they rent a constant stream of DVDs, because at some point, those fixed costs of warehousing, processing, and mailing has to eat up all $20 people pay. But it seems great for me and my wife because her first husband was the kind of guy who refused to watch any film that didn't have explosions, gore and nudity so she's missed a great number of classic films and we've had plans to go to blockbuster and start to put a dent into that list, but we never go often enough or when we are there we limit ourselves to one or two, and maybe a new release takes precedence. So for use its actually kind of good that they just send the next movie on the list and take the choice out of our hands. One little minor potential difficulty though-you can go in and re-arrange your priorities whenever you want to, so apparently, couples have been known to serupticiously move "their" movie up on the list and knock their partners movie down!

(Especially you, Chris-that was the best card of the bunch Unfortunately, the fates conspired against me-when w got to Blue Note Records we found out that starting Sunday, the jazz and vinyl annex is closed Sundays and Wednesdays! BIG ARGH!! Lucky for me though, I've got this week off from work so I'll be heading down there this afternoon to blow Mom's cash. Kinda traditional for me-I call it "the birthday that keeps on giving" because friends and family always seem slow on the uptake and I end up getting late arriving gifts for a week or ten days after the big day. T'ain't complaining though! B)

Jim, I haven't searched too carefully, but I usually get Criss Cross from Cadencebuilding.com Their price is usually $14 which is much cheaper than the price at Borders, which is the one brick and mortar store that seems to stock new releases but nothing else anyway.

I'm pretty sure we had an interesting discussion about this fairly recently. Personally I have always thought that "Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers" was as good a moment as any to pinpoint, due to the presence of gospel-influenced tunes like "The Preacher," plus the presence of younger folks like Mobley who would be such a critical part of the hardbop era. On the other hand, I tend to think of LD and Brownie as being more of the bop era than the subsequent hard bop era (not that LD didn't adjust with the times, but I always thought of Lee Morgan as the hardbop extension of Clifford Brown. But maybe that's just because Clifford died so young.)

However, there were at least 20 all told who got discs after things got interesting and they wanted to participate. So, I'd say we are up about 50% overall, it will be interesting to see if after all this discussion about it, there are still more people who get inspired to participate after things get going.

I think its basically been established that PMs are delivered and that the error message received is related only to the e-mail notification that a message has been received. So, basically, people simply should refrain from using the back button to "try again" as it only results in multiple copies of the same PM being delivered.

Up once more. All US shipments leave bright and early Friday morning, so any dawdlers need to step up and request a copy of Blindfold Test #2!

Almost the whole Pacific Jazz label is lp only, and $20 a shot at that. The only exception to this rule is all those crappy Bud Shank foo-foo lps he did. You can't give those away! Blue Note has released some Pacific stuff before. Do they have access to that material? If so, why the hold-out? As far as Blue Note goes, their "West Coast Classics" series of PJ reissues didn't meet expectations for sales. But don't forget that the Mosaic Selects have already covered (or will shortly cover) two excellent Pacific Jazz artists, Carmell Jones and Curtis Amy.

Uh, no, I reckoned that subsequent requests would include addresses. I mean, its not necessarily true that all participants will continue, so if with each new test, people have to declare their interest, they might as well include their address too.

Up, cause it looks to me like there are quite a few participants who haven't come back to post on the Answers thread. Shouldn't that be a requirement? I think it should be an expectation, at least. Like Rooster-you were deep into the puzzling things out-no reaction to the answers? (Don't mean to call you out on this, I just figured you'd have something to say ...

Peter, I plan to post the master list on Friday when I ship to the American participants. Basically I think I've caught everyone though its possible I missed somewhere. We're at 28 participants all told, a large increase over Tony's test.

I just sent a PM and got the same Sprockets error (would you like to touch my monkey? but I am assuming that it still arrived. I don't have a problem posting though. And still no e-mail notifications of PMs received. EDIT: I DO have a problem posting, I got the same weird error message now, but since I've seen people getting snookered into multiple postings, I didn't use the back button so I avoided padding my total there. Really not good though.
