I had to go and check into that too ... I didn't really know when Mosaic actually started, they were in full swing by the time I became aware of them after I caught the jazz bug in 1988. Brooks was the first one I requested at Christmas time, surely by 1989 or 1990.

While I thought I had Sonny's Back, in reality its taken to January 16th and Night Mist for an album I own. Many unknowns to date, none strike me as things I need to get at this moment.

Thanks for your thoughts Dmitry. #13 was identified as Percy France, but I like your comparison to Don Byas, as Percy's first significant gig was with Bill Doggett, who stated that while Percy was at the time, of a generation to go the way of the more popular honking and screaming tenors, his playing was more sophisticated and he specifically referenced Don Byas. And yes, blues-heavy but its very rare that one of mine doesn't fit into the "blues-heavy" zone.

Here's one my father, who worked in the business side of show business including stints with MGM and Hanna Barbera, loved to tell. Cecil B. Demille is remembered for his incredible epic films with huge casts of extras and many assistant directors to catch all the action simultaneously. He would communicate with them via walkie talkie. So one day on the set, very complicated scene is finally set up and Demille announces that it's time to roll film. "Ready when you are, C.B.!" come the replies from his assistant directors. He calls action, and thousands of people are moving/fighting etc. He calls "cut" and asks his first assistant if he got that. "Well C.B., the camera wasn't centered the way you wanted it. I'm not sure if we got it." And he asks the second director, and he reports trouble with the camera mount. Now he's worried about a completely lost take, but he still has one more assistant he hasn't heard from. "Ready when you are, C.B.!"

These two discs worth of Blakey/Wayne/Lee/Bobby in Japan have appeared "elsewhere"? I'd like to know where that was because it's being promoted as never-before-released, and I know its not the same as the "day in Japan" releases back in the 90s. I do have somewhere a multi-generation copy of a video of them in Japan but that was with a Japanese big band ...

I don't think discussing the logic of an SC is decision is of necessity "political". I'll cop to that referencing the left is a political statement and I will edit it out.

Well we're not supposed to get into politics but the Opinions are pretty compelling in favor of the majority. They certainly are to me. Precedent and text of the OSHA statute supports the necessity of legislative action to approve or establish such a mandate. And Omicron, which makes the vaccinated vectors of disease, too, doesn't exactly help Biden's case. The court isn't prohibiting private companies, large and small, from instituting vaccine mandates, let's recall. It is saying that the constitution, the legislative text, and their precedents establish that Federal authority is lacking. <deleted for overt political comment> And anyway I have suspected all along that this is what Biden knew was coming, especially in light of the Supremes decision on the eviction moratorium, and what this was about was not enforcing a mandate on all these businesses by a beauracracy that can hardly function on its actual mandate, but as a way to give cover to large corporations with tens of thousands of employees to announce and start enforcing a mandate of their own. And I would argue that its had its intended effect - most corporations were claiming 90-95% compliance already. Feel free to tell me how wrong I am.

And per Phil's autobiography, the producer picked notes from different takes to make up that solo. Phil Woods was Kenny G before Kenny G was.

Hopefully a couple more people jump in but in the interests of trying to run the table to the greatest extent possible (and perhaps at least try to be competitive with my friend Mr. Felser as far as # of discussion posts go ) I intend to go whole hog with hints on or around January 20. Something I've never really done before, save for the odd one or two tracks.

I do recall that ... to me Gene on Concord (as leader) is much more 'Gene with rhythm (including guitar)' i.e. what Gheorge said earlier - big pianist, less prominent bass/drums. Whereas Gene with Ray Brown & Jeff Hamilton or Gene with Andy & Bill are more him as part of a great band. I dig Gene in all contexts (well except the contexts used for his final BNs, and about 1/2 of his JAM recordings) but enjoy most the trios myself.

Thank you but as it turned out that LP was in remarkably better shape than "G+" and my transfer off my cheap rig, folded down to mono and with minimal pop/click removal, turned out to be excellent. Something I had looked for over 20 years for ... finally heard.

From your list Peter I would think that you are more interested in boppish to post-bop trios, but that really leaves me wondering what Ray Bryant has that Gene doesn't. But as you say to each their own.

Got Live in Paris for Christmas and while I enjoy all of his HighNote recordings, this one gets an extra star or three, and I think its definitely due to being a live concert. (And when I say extra star or three, none of his HighNotes get less than 4 stars, so the additional stars are breaking the grading system.
