Thanks - never seen the video clip of Hank and the others before. Kinda hokey that they went to slo-mo to extend the Hank clip, though. Was it about a second and a half long?

MLB 2021: it’s baseball season!
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thought I had posted about how horrific and disastrous last night's collapse was ... but I cannot tell you how good it feels to know I won't need to waste any more time watching a fundamentally flawed embarrassment of a roster complete their ignominious departure on Friday. And for the record, color me extremely happy to know that the Legend of Alex Cora (tm) is dying. That was BS from the start. And this is proof that if you don't have the players, you don't get the results of your "magic". -

I've never seen that poster anywhere else but it stayed on my bachelor apartment living room wall thru many moves and many push-pin punctures. Pretty sure I found it in St. Louis, at Vintage Vinyl, very early in my jazz journey. -
Oh man, there are two 1982 Chicago Jazz fest shows up here https://archive.org/search.php?query=chicago+jazz&page=2 but not that one. Would really love to hear this.

Jim's objection to seating charts notwithstanding, I am curious if others hear similarities between Turrentine's sound and the Texas Tenor tradition.

Continuing my monologue of commentary about the post-season, if the Red Sox get the Nick Pivetta who, in 1/2 of his starts, allowed 2 or fewer earned runs, I like our chances to put the Astros on the brink. Especially turning to Grienke for the start and his recent issues/inactivity. OTOH if we get the other Pivetta and the Astros start to hitting as they are very capable of doing, I'll be deeply worried going into a Game 5 with Sale. He could put us back in Houston having Eovaldi and E-Rod on the hill to pull it out. Much better that Pivetta pitch and the red-hot bats keep going. I wonder if I'll regret rooting for the Braves. Dodgers have their work cut out for them, that's for sure. -
Very much this, although the topic is his more successful/famous brother.

While born in Pittsburgh, I place Turrentine in the Texas Tenor tradition. He had the same blues cry and grit in his tone that I associate with Fathead and Arnett Cobb among others. I am not really sure why the OP keeps him shy of "soul jazz" especially when considering the number of organ-tenor albums he made. In terms of the grand narrative, Mr. T was, I think, a lot like Ammons in his level of popularity in the black community, if not in specific terms of "hits" that the critics writing the narrative can't be concerned with him.

There's a recording - no idea if its the exact same group Bill saw. https://www.discogs.com/master/344289-Sonny-Stitt-With-Red-Holloway-Forecast-Sonny-Red

This was a must-win and they did. So ... 3 out of 5 in Boston but last 2 in Houston - doesn't feel like home field advantage. Assuming they do reach the Series, glad to see Atlanta won last night. I think the Dodgers would make mincemeat out of most of the Red Sox staff, plus I wouldn't want Pujols in the lineup as the DH. If Atlanta can pull the upset, and we do beat Houston, then we get home-field advantage despite coming out of the wild card spot. (Which brings up another bit of total confusion: The whole idea was that with play in games (and potentially more than one), Wild Card teams were supposed to be at a bigger disadvantage, having probably used their best starter to get in to the dance, and maybe second best to secure their spot in the last game of the season. Yet, now, if you do get thru to the World Series and have best record, you host 1-2 and 5-6? If its the Dodgers and Houston, Dodgers should suffer for not winning the division and start on the road, 106 wins be damned.) -

Sorry for the pain you must feel. Incredible that two teams could have such records in the same division especially when San Diego was the hot pick going into the season. IMO definitely a bad call on the check swing. A bit out of sorts with Sale named as Game 1 starter. Eovaldi is certainly the easy choice, on regular rest. Supposedly Sale "found it" between his last near-disaster of a start and now. We should know pretty quickly tonight if that was really the case. If Sale gives 5 quality innings and he sticks with the best of his bullpen - like Houk for three innings and Whitlock for the 9th, this could be a big advantage with Eovaldi going in Game 2. But if Sale sucks again that's a lot of pressure for game 2 to go back to the Fens with a split. We used to say "In Theo We Trust". If this works I guess it will be "In Alex we Trust". -
Richard Matheson Is Everywhere

Have you seen Omega Man with Chuck Heston? Same source - like the remake with Wil Smith. When I was a kid I thought Omega Man was way cool. Ultimately I decided no one has ever done justice to the Matheson story. -

Personally among Shatner appearances (and also written by Matheson) I prefer the one with the fortune telling machine in the diner. -

Ghost Story and the opening scene from Night of the Living Dead scared the ever-living crap out of me when I was 7 or so. Never would have guessed a DVD (?) exists for the former, maybe I'll try to find a copy and see if it still works its magic. Matheson, of course, was great, and you don't even mention Twilight Zone. -

DOH! And now I recall planning to write a post about how this describes the Maupinized part of the Morgan box set and how it wasn't my cuppa. I do thank you both though for saving me the time and money to verify that Understanding ain't my cup of tea either. -

I could have sworn my friend Mr. Felser (and Rooster) posted something about the edginess of this era of hard/post bop and how exciting it is but I can't find the posts now. Anyway I have to say that for me, all of that edginess (not the word used originally) comes from Maupin, and that I really really should have remembered that it was Maupin's playing on the original 3-disc set that kept me from pulling it out very often. I love Lee on these tunes; I love Mabes too. And I am going to enjoy the booklet which is nicely done. But I can't get with Maupin. I know, I know, I may be in a severe minority here. But his playing makes me want to skip ahead on 95% of these tracks. Oh well. -

I Went to a Mall Yesterday
Dan Gould replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Funny in the same circumstances I'd have stopped at the McDonalds or whatever fast food restaurant had an out-parcel for that purpose. Faster ingress and egress for sure. As for malls in general when I was a kid there was a major mall in Nassau county Mom shopped at but at the moment I have no clue what it was called. I'd bet its still in operation though. Later when I was an adolescent in CT, no malls near to Wilton (big one in Stamford that Mom went to as the nearest Macy's (I think)). The opening of the Danbury Mall (20 minute drive) was a pretty big thing as I recall but pretty sure that one has bitten the dust. When I went to Tallahassee for college, malls played a bigger role in my shopping for sure. Governor's Square on Appalachee Parkway, just down the road from Graham's Erection (then-governor Bob Graham, and really you don't think the capitol and the office tower in between don't look like one? Heaven forbid Florida elects a female Governor I don't know what the locals would start calling it.)
