  1. No baseball thread? blasphemy! have fun eating zito's contract for the next 7(?) years. Its weird to see him in any other uniform but the a's. I was fortunate to have seats right behind home plate at the coliseum and see the ridiculous arc of his curveball. go padres!!!
  2. court of the crimson king is such an awesome song
  3. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with the recordings of this amazing high school funk/soul/jazz band. Their band leader actually helped groom a young Melvin Sparks before he left for the east coast. I highly recommend this music, considering the quality and the fact that most of the musicians are mere high schoolers
  4. Both. I have both and I wouldnt want to have to choose between them
  5. I'm listening to this song on the Mosaic Johnny Hodges Small Group Sessions and I was wondering whether there were any other notable recordings of this song by other artists? I'm not sure about the origins of this song
  6. as a Charger fan, I must say I'm slightly disturbed by the hiring. While I do believe this was a very practical decision, in so far as Cotrell was already going to the DC and we needed experience at OC, I wonder if it would have been better to go younger. I do trust AJ Smith though, as hes has been the best decision maker in franchise history.
  7. too many pop stars. the musical sensibilities of this current generation of youth is pathetic. As a member of generation Y, im pretty horrified at what most people my age like to listen to. its either american idol (which is pretty much karaoke,) britneyspears/timberlake/aguilera/beyonce/etc..., emo ( i really dont get this one), hip hop ( I wont throw this one completely under the bus, there were some good bands - tribe called quest for example- but its pretty much been a dead musical format for over a decade) ass-metal or indie pop.
  8. This was a very interesting read.
  9. heres how we settle it: Stewie "lame-ass" Copeland vs. Roy "my man" Haynes In An Epic Drum-Off To Save The Good Name Of Jazz Winner gets lifetime bragging rights Loser has to have seven hours of tantric sex with sting
  10. I pity the woman having seven hours of tantric sex with sting. I wonder if he makes her hold up a mirror up to his face the whole time
  11. What a vagina (no offense meant to the ladies.) sounds like this guy has issues with his daddy. maybe hes exacting his revenge after being subjected to so many cocaine-induced jam sessions as a kid. can't say i disagree with him comments on miles (although he definitely did have musical talent) This guy is obviously an idiot, which makes sense considering that he teamed up with narcissist-supreme sting. the police are lame anyway
  12. Crying Babies???? Weird pseudo-religious voice overs??? Do any of you know the story behind the genesis/inspiration for this session?
  13. I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but i came across this. what an interesting concept, fiction inspired by warne.... must be some crazy shit http://www.salmosca.com/out_of_nowhere.htm
  14. the comparison to mahler and stravinsky was indeed stupid, but for the reason that he used their names in the context of making some sort of retarded racially contextualized statement about black musical geniuses and how people of that time weren't inclined to acknowledge the musical talents of blacks or accept them as geniuses, which i find hard believe. I also dislike how classical composers are treated like their form of music is somehow a more noble and elevated artform. (this is an aside, I like mahler and stravinsky alot...oh and one last thing the word genius is thrown around way too much. especially in the way that the people who came up with the macarthur "genius" grant like to use it)
  15. down with James Blount! up with ornette!
  16. I saw the documentary and enjoyed it, considering I didn't know that much about billy strayhorn. The sounds clips they played from "Paris Blues" were amazing, and I can't wait to get my hands on that album. It sounded beautiful. It's curious to me that you people are so quick to defend Ellington. Take the bad with the good. Also the Elvis Costello number was so bad I had to hit the mute button. Funny how PBS recycles the same images from their other documentaries (Jazz, Civil Rights) Was this a Ken Burns project? I hope not, the little bastard
  17. Dude, you people are jaded. the chili peppers gave OC some much deserved love last night.
  18. Garbarek Album Depressing Nature Photo German Garbage Can
  19. When/on what album did YL start incorporating the funk in his music? YL is one of the absent members of my jazz collection and I'd like to hear more of him. I hate to admit it but all I have is Eastern Sounds That being said, YL did teach at my school for a time and once I walked outside my dorm and there was car parked semi-illegally on the steps and I looked at the handwritten parking permit and it said "Yusef Lateef" on it. very happy day. my friend took his class and basically he said it consisted of 60 students on a variety of instruments playing a single note at various levels of intensity, and occasionally YL would instruct some of them to play a different note. My friend said the noise was totally insane. YL rules
  20. I'm not sure if this has been posted before and I'm also not if this link is still valid (the library computer I am using seems to have blocked YouTube,) but if so, I submit to you all a hilarious video of the Godfather himself in a very...lets just say "jovial" mood: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTaDk_P91ao Rest In Peace JB! It's a Man's World!
  21. please people. i am not chewy and i am not matt, although i know both of them. i am my own person, with my own opinions, however i do agree with the chewbacca that ecm is a lame pretentious label that promotes keith jarrett way too much. he cant hold a candle to duke pearson. word. and i like alberto ayler. and big john patton. and earthless a great san diego rock band.
  22. dontcha know donald byrd 4 EVA is lou donaldson! I wish I was Lou Donaldson! wouldn't that be cool...
  23. i am on the phone with a completely psychotic chewy, who is rambling in a incoherent and manic way about the session info for the following records: Charlie Parker live sessions on phoenix records -PHX-322 "on the tape it says Phoenix 10. The songs listed are the following: 'Round midnight 5:04, Move 4:48, Hothouse 4:11, (Side B) How High the Moon 2:46, Street Beat 6:59, Out of Nowhere 3:15, KoKo 2:49" I made a unsuccessful attempt to help chewy by looking up the miles ahead charlie parker database, but it was no go and chewy was having ADHD because the record store was closing. Please someone him so i dont have to deal with him. hes going totally mental because he saw a hot girl at work and had a wet dream about shorty rogers
