What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Tony Tuff's Wha we a go do Sly on drums (RIP). Amazing album that VP just reissued, digitizing it for the first time. Been a reggae fan for decades now and have never seen this one before. Better late than never. -

Leroy Smart's Musical Don: https://leroysmart.bandcamp.com/album/musical-don From '88. Recently remastered by Crucial Bunny. Steely & Clevie involved, as was Jackie Mittoo. Unexpected quality on this one. Definitely recommend if you dig reggae and don't mind/enjoy that 80s Jamaican sound. -

Thanks guys. Makes me wish they could include those liners in their downloads then. Any recs for shopping their CDs online? -

Does Storyville include quality liners with their archive CDs? I've never seen them in US stores and only know about them via Bandcamp. The pics and descriptions don't seem to indicate anything. -
I had no idea this was even made. Wondering if it was even distributed in the US at all. Edit: Nvm. See it's the premier of the movie so it's brand new. Reading comprehension is a great thing that I should practice more of.

I can't think of Jekyll & Hyde without thinking of this tune. It's burned into my brain at this point: -
So the ezz-thetics beats the Impulse! release? In what way would you say? I'm a little surprised that's the case.

I'm hoping sites like Bandcamp are helping some of these labels with driving some revenue and getting exposure, especially since the American market for CDs is a fraction of what it once was. I really dig the Jazz in Britain label along with several others you mention. Without Bandcamp I'm not sure how I would have heard about some of them.

Some great albums there, most of which are new to me. Thanks for the list/link. -
No doubt after reviewing their Discogs page. there's some really good stuff. I got there after listening again to Tony Coe's Axel: What Say We Play Today. Really enjoyed that one, esp Gordon Beck. So starting digging around and found that Merrill record. Fruitful search so far.

Helen Merrill, Gordon Beck, Stephane Grappelli, & Steve Lacy "Music Makers" recorded in Paris, 1986. Issued on Owl Records, a label I know nothing about but one that's got some interesting looking titles.

That's a great quote from Janek. Setting up unusual combos that he thought would go over well. Sounds like a mix tape session only with live performers. -

Which ones were 16" then? I mistakenly thought all V-Discs were that size. -
Great musician. I always enjoyed his playing. RIP

Interesting album. Never heard it back in '93 when it came out. Looks like they went heavy on the merch with the bandcamp page when they reissued this. -
man I get it. I grew up and still live in the south. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Bruce's and this song isn't great to me. but at some point he was working class right? and unlike most of his demo that see things the complete opposite, it doesn't look like he's forgotten that. which is good to know but I'm also not arguing that he should get a medal or anything.

I'm not getting the manipulation side of it but we may be coming at it from different perspectives. I don't like being sold a bill of goods, don't like dealing with sham marketing, don't like to be hustled, etc. I also don't think that's the intention here with this song. Like, I don't think Bruce released this to make money. To me that would be the difference and I'd be cynical about it too.

Unfortunately, it's the exact kind of thing necessary at the moment. If you want something a little stronger than this, check out Jesse Welles' "Join Ice," preferably the live version from Colbert's Late Show. Biting satire at its finest. It's on YT and I highly recommend going to listen. While songs will not slay physically, they can bolster spirit among targeted groups and their allies. The confirmation that you're not alone versus a mythical "silent majority" can be the helping hand one needs. Movements need anthems because they need voices to alert, encourage, and hopefully unify toward a common good. Regarding Guthrie's guitar message, I don't think he meant physically at all. Music has the power to change minds and educate, and education is a key weapon against fascism. I don't have any doubt he inspired and educated people with his message. Many of them likely fought in WW2 and they indeed killed fascists.

Diving in 1 - I dig it all right. Nice song they segue into after the intro. Drumming makes me think this was recorded recently. It's got an ECM feel at moments but those are fleeting, and mainly in the quieter moments. It could very well be a new Blue Note album as well. Hard to pin down anything about this. Wild guess but is Kenny Garrett involved? 2 - Warming up to this one. Took me a minute or so but I caught the groove. The bassist is playing very well. The whole band is pretty tight. They've got that pop-jazz sound going on. Not as slanted toward R&B as Sade though. The sound is more in the vein of rock, and I think that's coming from the guitar style. No guesses but a good song. 3 - The guitarist is the leader? They've got the best recorded sound here. Drummer is all over that snare. He's not letting that thing go anywhere. Trumpet is nice. Kenny Wheeler? My least favorite song so far. Good playing but I'm not able to get around how forward these drums are in the mix. 4 - From the big cavernous studio of track 3 to this tight corner. Quite a contrast. That guitar won't be going over well lol. Rypdal comes to mind here but I usually hear him with more sustained notes. This kind of reminds me of Crazy Doberman but it's a little too "happy" to be them. I've got no guesses. 5 - Solo piano. Corea? I got nothing. 6 - Guaraldi-esque piano style. Is it him? Great breakdown toward the end of the song. Nice one. 7 - Evil Gal Blues but not a version I recognize. 8 - Reminds me of Turrentine and Jimmy Smith. Great tune. 9 - Most Gentlemen Don't Like Love. Again stumped on the singer. Betty Carter maybe? 10 - Love this one. First thought is Earl Hines but then I went to Teddy Wilson. I'm not sure. 11 - Another great jazz vocal tune. I've enjoyed all that you've put on this BFT. This one is What's New. The mic is highlighting the singer's t's, to the point where it sounds like a modern recording. Or she's singing through a Tascam. I could be totally wrong there. Regardless I have no idea who this is. 12. I'm getting that accordion coming through. Outside of Dino Saluzzi I don't know who to guess. 13. Another good tune, with vibes that are played very well. No guesses though. Thanks Randy! Good stuff as usual. Eclectic selections which made for a fun listen.

Strong chance that a live "Om" sounds nothing like the album version right? Is it correct to say Trane hated how that session came out and didn't want it released while he was alive? That's what I thought I read a while back.
