  1. Because aside from their annual residency at the Village Vanguard and the occasional album, the group is no longer a "going concern". Guy That's more of a going concern than most bands!
  2. Uh, why are people referring to the Motion trio in the past tense? Have I missed some news?
  3. I bought the CDs yesterday. I like it, too. I dig what Uuskyla does here--kind of a primal, tribal-beat sort of thing. I find it very appealing. And Brotz does what Brotz does. I will say, this is probably one of the few Brotzmann records that will make you wanna dance. Recommended, if you like this sort of thing!
  4. Huh. I don't think I'd want to listen to it on its own, but I thought the score was quite effective as part of the film. It was clearly a conscious choice to use anachronistic music. Whether you think it "works" is, of course, a matter of personal taste. I thought it worked.
  5. What is this? The world needs to know!
  6. As my girlfriend likes to say: "Any music that makes girls want to move their hips can't be too bad."
  7. My guess is that it would impact new recordings more than reissues (not nearly the upfront cost involved). I'd be willing to venture that reissues are likely to become digital only over the next couple years, that sure would get rid of alot of the cost. Yes, I agree, at least on the first proposition. I'd be surprised if BN's reissue programs aren't reasonably profitable; just as I'd be surprised if their new releases, apart from a breakout like Norah Jones, are very profitable.
  8. It's VERY condescending. And if you go back to the first page of this thread, you can find out who said it and which music he was referring to. (post #11). You keep reiterating that the words in your post weren't yours. Cool. But you haven't said what point you were trying to make by posting them.

    Joe McPhee

If you like those, you need to hear Oleo! I have a very similar reaction to McPhee, incidentally. I don't listen to him that often these days, but I'm always knocked out when I do. All three you mention are very good, but I like Linear B best of these, as well--great take on Shorter's "Footprints"!
  10. I've never been a huge Radiohead fan--liked 'em, never really loved 'em. I never downloaded the MP3 for In Rainbows. But when I saw the newly released CD version on Amazon for $8 I couldn't resist checking it out (after having seen the record appear on many year-end rock top ten lists). I'm on my second listen right now, and I think it's truly great, definitely one of the best rock records I've heard in recent years. And I don't know how the sound quality was for the downloads (not wondeful, I'm sure), but the CD sounds terrific to me--a lot better through my halfway-decent system than most modern pop records. I'm no audiophile, but this sounds very clear and present to my ears. I see that the CD is selling well. I have to say, I doubt that I would have been as likely to pick this up without all the hype surrounding the downloads (and subsequent opportunity for the record to show up on all those top ten lists BEFORE the CD was released!). I wonder if other consumers are similar in this regard. And I wonder if this effect will be considered in all the hullabaloo about the business model of this release!
  11. I don't know if I exactly feel "guilty" about it, but given how dismissive most jazz fans are about Jan Garbarek's later work, I feel a little weird about how much I like his Rites.
  12. Brotzmann/Pliakas/Wertmuller's Full Blast on Jazzwerkstatt is absolutely fucking badass!
  13. I've been checking out ECM big time for the past few months: Jarrett, Garbarek, Abercrombie, Holland, Stanko, Lloyd, a few others. I've become a pretty big fan of the label in general.
  14. Sorry to hear about this, man. But as someone who got separated in 2005 and divorced in 2006, and whose life is incomparably better now than when I was married to my ex-wife, please know that there is hope for the future--I definitely know how hard it is to see that possibility when you're in the middle of splitting up. If you haven't done so yet, I really cannot recommend highly enough that you find yourself a good therapist. It helped me immeasurably, and I recommend it to anyone who tells me they are going through a divorce. When things were first falling apart in my marriage, and I'd started seeing my therapist, one of my oldest, best friends called out of the blue, and I told him what was going on. My ex-wife had plenty of "issues", and so I said to him, "It's pretty ironic that of the two of us, I'm the one in therapy." He said, "No, not at all. Because it's just logical to get help when you need it. And of the two of you, you're the one who's being logical." Anyway, best of luck to you.
  15. That's the one on Hat, right? I had this one in my hands at the store earlier today, but opted for 14 Love Poems. Thanks for the quick review. Maybe I'll head back and pick it up. Yes, it's the one on hat. And I believe it can be had for cheap at most of your friendly hat retailers. Brotz does ballads!
  16. I'm nearly done with my first listen to Tales Out of Time. Excellent stuff! Very subdued (more than, say, Guts, the live disc by the same band). This one sounds to me to be closer to McPhee's aesthetic than to Brotzmann's. But in any case, it's very, very good.
  17. One of the few positives about the apparently imminent closing of this board is that we (or at any rate, the royal "we") won't have to read any more of your tiresome rants, clem--not even the more comprehensible ones. I only regret that I'll never learn if there's anything or anybody you DO like. Ah, well: nobody ever said I wouldn't have to carry any burdens.
  18. Does anyone have Live in Berlin '71 with Mangelsdorff, Bennink and Van Hove? Thoughts on that one?
  19. I'm on a similar path but about a year behind you. Glad to hear you found someone else, Rob! At this point I'm not interested in any kind of relationship EVER again, but I realize I'm still too close to the event. I'm hoping that changes over time. Anyway, congratulations! There's always hope! Indeed there is! Stay open to possibilities....
  20. After a bad 2005 (separated from my ex-wife), and a better 2006 (finalized divorce, started getting on with life), I've had a wondeful 2007. I started dating my current girlfriend in January and it's the best relationship I've ever been in. And I feel like I've learned and grown a lot over the past several years. Becoming involved with her is not the only nice thing that happened to me this year, but it was definitely the nicest.
  21. I remember that gig! Very good indeed... Really? Awesome. We should start a letter-writing campaign!
  22. No, I don't know. I kind of doubt it, after ten days of concerts ending next weekend, though.
