  1. When Your Music raised its price from $4.99 to $5.99, I ordered Think Tank and a couple of others because it was highly recommended by the posters at AAJ. I don't dislike it, but it is much different from what I expected. It is more abstract and less soulful than the other Pat Martino recordings I had heard. I play it a few times a year, but only when I come upon it - I never seek it out as something I'm in the mood to hear. This thread has given me the urge to listen to it again, but I can't find it!
  2. Yesterday: Cannonball Adderley - Greatest Hits (Riverside Bill Grauer) Dom Um Romao - Spirit of the Times (Happy Bird, licensed from Muse) 1975 The Four Freshmen - Freshmen Favorites (Capitol) Cannonball Adderley - Why am I Treated So Bad? (Capitol) 1967? Gary Windo - Dogface (Europa) The Tommy Flanagan Trio (Prestige Moodsville OJC) Paul Bley - Open, to love (ECM) 1972 Now: Pete Fountain - New Orleans at Midnight (Coral) 1963
  3. Guy, my copy is on the way. The disc goes on sale tomorrow. Initially, I confused Anat Fort with another musician who has a new album coming out (actually two) named Anat Cohen. I don't think I've ever heard a record with Paul Motian I didn't like, so I'm looking forward to it. I'll let you know.
  4. OK, I have just gone to the website and have seen a number of more for $4.98 that look interesting, including quite a number of Oscar Petersons for those of you who like him; and Art Blakey - A Night at Birdland vols. 1 & 2; Moanin', all RVG Paul Desmond - Two of a Mind, Late Lament, Easy Living Horace Silver - Song for My Father and Cape Verdean Blues, both RVG Keith Jarrett - Standards, vols. 1 & 2 Michel Legrand - Legrand Jazz (Didn't I read here the other day that some of you guys wished this were still available?)
  5. I received an email today with a number of CDs listed for $4.98, including: Chet Baker Quartet Live, vol. 3 (Mosaic material) Chris Potter - Traveling Mercies Gerry Mulligan - What is There to Say? Terence Blanchard - Wandering Moon Claude Bolling Big Band - Jazz Brunch Lambert, Hendricks & Ross - Everybody's Boppin' Gene Harris & the Three Sounds - Live at the It Club, vol. 2 Branford Marsalis - I Heard You Twice the First Time Ken Burns Jazz - Thelonious Monk
  6. Shrdlu, we talked briefly about that twofer just the other day on the "vinyl spinning" thread. Since you've mentioned it, I'll give New York, NY a spin tonight.
  7. Porcy, Gilles was a Canadian from Quebec. Don't blame us for him!
  8. Guy, we're on the same page! Since you like Grey and Pink, their third album, I recommend their second album If I could Do It All Over Again.
  9. One of my favorite albums. Highly recommended!
  10. Mike & Sally Oldfield, Pekka Pohjola (Happy Bird) 1981 Ben Mink - Foreign Exchange (PVC-Passport) 1980
  11. Another pet peave of mine! I have noticed that nearly 100% of the women tailgaters are driving SUVs. I have to believe that they drive carelessly because they believe they will not be physically hurt in case of a collision.
  12. Happy Birthday Wesbed!
  13. My thoughts exactly. I enjoyed both MM albums when they came out, but I do not rate them as highly as a number of other Canterbury albums.
  14. I remember driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike listening to the radio when I heard the news.
  15. I pulled out my two Mariachi Brass albums today, and I was struck by the difference in their quality. Given that they are pop, not jazz...Hats Off might rate five stars. In the Mood is strictly two stars. Listening to the vintage mid-60s songs on Hats Off was fun!
  16. Willem Breuker Kollektief - Summer Music (Margo) 1978 The Mariachi Brass - Hats Off (World Pacific) 1967? The Mariachi Brass - In the Mood (World Pacific) 1968?
  17. Yes ! I met him briefly in 1971. What a player!
  18. I don't recall the day when the major record labels were not driven by greed. So what's new?
  19. Jeff Garcia signed to play for Tampa Bay and Jon Gruden today. It wouldn't surprise me if Chris Simms were found to be unfit to play because of his spleen being removed; so Garcia may be the starter. Tampa Bay also acquired the rights to Jake Plummer, but I don't see him beating out Garcia if the offensive scheme is to Garcia's liking. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home
  20. Sidewinder, is that the same Terry Smith the guitarist who was a member of If? Ray Warleigh was on the Soft Machine Land of Cockayne album I listened to tonight.
  21. Dave Pike - The Doors of Perception (Vortex) 1970 Kit Watkins - Frames of Mind (Azimuth) 1982 The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall (Riverside OJC) 1959 Soft Machine - Land of Cockayne (Br. EMI) 1980 Mirage - Now You See It (Compendium) 1977 Corea/Vitous/Haynes - Trio Music, disc 2 (ECM) 1981
  22. RIP. I remember him from the Cavett Show, which I used to watch every night when I was in college, but I didn't know that he had such experience with so many other greats.
  23. Soft Machine - Alive & Well, Recorded in Paris (Br. Harvest) 1977 The Fourth Way - Werwolf (Harvest) 1970 Paul Bley - Ballads (ECM) 1967 Soft Machine - 5 (Columbia) 1971
  24. Happy Birthday Garth!
