Organissimo is in the studio...
mr jazz replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
just saw this. is the offer still open? Glad to see you guys are releasing another cd;really enjoyed the first one and hope to see the band in DC on your tour! -
saw them at Yoshis last week. A fabulous show. A highlight was the last part of the Monterey piece featuring an absolutely stunning intro by Dave. The arrangements reminded me of Gerald Wilson at times. A big band is the epitome of jazz!

Duke Ellington : Never No Lament: The Blanton-We
mr jazz replied to Bright Moments's topic in Recommendations
Try to find the Dreyfus Jazz collection titled Ko-Ko. Best sounding Blanton-Webster period music available, IMO. -
how does this cd compare to his first big band one? If I was to purchase one, which one would it be?

thanks for the info.

I confess, I love this album but don't currently have it on cd What's the best version available on cd-soundwise, extra tracks....??????

My NAD is still going strong with only one alignment after 17 years! Doesn't like cdrs though

check out half.com. I wish listed it and after a couple of emails picked up like new copy of Blues in Orbit for around $9 including shipping (seller's feedback was fine). I;ve got soooo many Ellington cds but the other two releases sound good as well so I guess I'll put them on the list. thanks for the info

so they added a lot of bells and whistles-flash, etc. The result: slow downloads even with broadband and a somewhat confusing layout. I had no problems with the old look. If it ain't broke......

Dave Holland at the Library of Congress
mr jazz replied to Stefan Wood's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
wow-the big band. It's aways away but I'm really going to try and make it. maybe board members could gather before or after the show somewhere. I enjoyed meeting Bertrand and his son last year at the Tom Williams gig. -
Valuation of Mosaic Collection
mr jazz replied to jazzmantom2004's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I do not see the word dishonest in my post. I do not regard Hal as dishonest. Perhaps the description could have been clearer, perhaps I misread it. As I said above, I was satisfied with Hal's response. I would buy from him again and will post +++ feedback. End of story and this transaction. OK? -
Valuation of Mosaic Collection
mr jazz replied to jazzmantom2004's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I, OTOH, ordered what was advertised as the Storyville 97 Duke at Fargo but turned out to be the 1990 Vintage jazz classic release instead. Hal offered a 30% refund and I keep the discs which seems fair. Is there much difference in SQ between the 2 releases??? -
cool site-thanks for tthe headsup. I'm glad I was able to see this jazz master during his Columbia period-sad it was the only time.
-
Saw him several times with the late ,great Albert Collins. Maybe the best band he ever had. I remember Albert talking about playing with T-Bone Walker and launching into a tremendous Stormy Monday accompanied by AC.
-
I can't believe no one has mentioned Anniversary . One of his finest recordings period. Serenity was recorded at the same show and is superb as well.

Let Me Off Uptown is an excellent collection of her work with Gene Krupa and Roy Eldridge among others. Topaz Jazz (UK label) 1046

I like not love Blues Bag. The sound isn't great-especially percussion-and I still prefer Hark to this one but I'm glad I have it.

I just downloaded EAC and could use some advice on how to best use it.

agree with Brad. An interesting film until the shift to Africa, I couldn't see the connection. The Son House footage was fabulous though so no real complaints so far. Corey Harris does a nice job overall. I also heard tonight's episode is ridiculous in parts but I'll tune in and judge for myself.

allmusic dot com is always a good starting to at least get a bio of an artist and discography. of course their recs pale in the face of the knowledge pool here

I've also used American Digital and found them friendly and helpful though their shipping charges are high so you need to place a sizable order ($100 or more) to make it worthwhile. They recommended unbranded taiyo yuden blanks as being as reliable as mitsui and much cheaper. They seem to work fine in my PC, car, and other cd players.

I've been listening for a few weeks now and I generally agree with GA Russell. Wilson was able to recruit a litany of jazz all stars but some are past their prime and some should have been featured more (no solo for Jon Faddis). Kenny Barron is terrific especially on the opening selection though I would have preferred to hear any number of lesser played miles than milestones-a great tune but too many versions are out there already. The ensemble playing sounds a bit muted at times perhaps due to limited rehearsal time?? The Monterey theme is a fine version, arguably the highlight. That said, it's great to have a new Gerald Wilson recording and all big band fans should pick this one up and buy the Mosaic if you don't have it already.

ordered it last night from half dot comew for $8. I'll post some comments after a few listens

I'd stick with the telarchive twofers. They can be found inexpensively at half dot com or ebay and maintain a high level of quality. Garner was an amazing player-so versatile but always maintaining his distinctive style. IMO, Garner deserves consideration at the very top tier of pianists right along with Tatum, Hines, etc.

Any fans of the guitar should run not walk to get this one. There was and will never be another player like Roy. Tom Principato, a pretty fair guitarist in his own right, put this out on his own label. tomprincipato dot com
