  1. 8-6-71 is one of the great live recordings of the Dead easily available (on archive). Downloading and converting to wav files is quite easy and there are tutorials available. you need to grab a few free tools. check etree.org for instructions. there are lots of free dead sbs for download at various internet sites.
  2. Hodges set arrived yesterday and I immediately put on Disc 1 with a large scotch to close a longgggg week. My mood improved rapidly as I listened to Johnny's peerless sound. Thanks also for the careful packing. Set looks new per Take5's description. Thanks again!!
  3. Imations were the first cdrs I bought and half of them failed. I've used TY unbranded for years with virtually no problems. I wait for a sale and buy 500. With all the shows I'm downloading, I'll be buying another round before too long..heck..I've almost filled a 250gig (233 actual) external drive
  4. PM sent on Hodges set
  5. Thanks for the article. My only Pass show was with Oscar Peterson-fabulous is an understatement
  6. interesting articles. thanks for posting.
  7. I think Bolton's business manager looked a the multiplatinum sales of the Rod standards cds and said go forth and replicate.
  8. thanks. Will still raise a glass
  9. just heard the news. Very sad. I was fortunate enough to catch him in fine form a couple of years ago at Twins on U street in DC. I purchased one of his cds (tribute to Fats Waller-truly excellent) and had him sign it. A very nice man but even then he looked worn. By chance, we'll be on U street tonight and will raise a glass. RIP John Hicks.
  10. IMO, In my time siginificantly better than New York, new sound. Fellow board mates, I don't think we should encourage burning and distributing mosaic discs (especially those still available)-they need all the sales they can get-just my$.02
  11. Hefti was THE Basie arranger. Saw a wonderfrul Hefti tribute by the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra on U street a few years ago. Joe Wilder was blowin'...
  12. I just picked up what I thought was the 2004 reissue of this classic but it turns out it's the 1989 version. Tracks are the same so is there a big difference in SQ-89 vs 04?
  13. I can't dis Proper too much. Their boxes are inexpensive and offer an introduction to many artists of the 40s. As mentioned, the Navarro box is excellent for its content-less so for SQ.
  14. i saw a Hendrix/Young set on one of the Bit torrent sites. anyone have it/heard it? Studio recordings I think.
  15. I well remember the two TH shows I saw. A great live act.
  16. Ghuck is going to be in Buffalo Friday night. What's in Buffalo? any update on an appearance in DC?
  17. Dish network added Sirius channels a few months ago so I listen to it sometimes but, as my TY system is stoneage, low fidelity. I'm not sure I get all the channels but here's plenty of music available. In the car, it's news or music on my 6 cd changer and considering the number of cds I have, I just haven't been motivated to get into satellite radio. Maybe oneday. I just don't think both XM and Sirius will be able to survive over the long run.
  18. My wife picked the Krall Christmas cd up a few days ago and while the arrangements are nice (including a couple with Johnny Mandel) most of the tracks leaving me saying: fill in the blank did this one better. Her voice just does not move me. Back to the topic: Oscar Peterson Christmas Blue Note Christmas 6 string Santa-Joe Pass. A great jazz album not just a great Christmas album Ella Fitzgerald- A swingin' Christmas Tony Bennett Chrismas Album-Snowfall Al Dimeola Winter Nights Cyrus Chestnut-A Charlie Brown Christmas God rest ye merry Jazzmen Jethro Tull Christmas Nat King Cole Christmas album Carpenters Christmas Portrait Blue Christmas-Elvis Presley
  19. When I was attending Vanderbilt University in Nashville one night a friend and I went to the Bluebird Cafe to see Lenny Breau; that night he was playing a 7 string guitar and was sublime . A great talent and a junkie;heroin wasted another great artist.
  20. speaking of DPs-..how is 31 as far as SQ? Is it one of those flat soundboards or nice and dynamic?
  21. Miles got his singer back. RIP
  22. second the TCB Laussaune cds. I assume you have Moanin'? Yes, it was recorded in 10/58 but it is a must have cd
  23. Bummer!!! Hope you can make it to DC. If Blues Alley doesn't work try TwinsJazz club on U Street. Nice space. Caveat for Jim-it is up a flight of stairs
  24. downloaded 3-24-73 from archive. man does this show rock-Phil on fire. great SQ, great show and FREE!!!!!!!!!
  25. Congrats on Blues alley! I'll put it on the calendar. I only wish I could make the Wayne Shorter show tonight.
