  1. I picked it up(Miles music + Pete Cosey!) and I've given it a couple spins and I very much like what I've heard.
  2. Late also, but CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
  3. On Friday night(4/18) I went to see Reptet with our own Johnny E in Brooklyn, and it was an absolute gas!!! Repter is tight, loose, irreverent, serious and loads and loads of fun. They play with much panache and aren't shy about humor in their music. They're such a great contrast to some of the (very) stuffed shirts we have out there trying to sell jazz as museum music that must be always serious. Repte has a terrific 4 part horn section, trombone/tuba, trumpet and 2 saxes, all able soloists with ideas and some fire in them. Twice during the set they walked out of the venue and onto the street, playing on 7th Avenue in Brooklyn! Add a fine bassist(acoustic & electric) and our own Johhny E doing a great job of smackin' the skins and we have a formula for great music that is not formulaic! I only had one regret- Repete only played one set. Also at the gig I picked up the new Reptet disc, 'Chicken or Beef', which by the title alone shows that they aren't afraid to tackle weighty existential questions. I've given the disc a couple spins and I very highly recommend it.
  4. That Willisau box by Braxton has been expected for quite some time now- I'll believe it when it actually is reissued.
  5. I saw them at Tonic once for a Kermit Driscoll benefit and they were excellent! Frisell seemed to be having a great time and they played as a group rather than a collection of individuals.

    Hi

    Welcome!
  7. He's recorded some with Jeff Beck and Beck is notorious for being extremely picky about his drummers.
  8. Happy Birthday, Allen, I just bought a 'Jews in Hell'
  9. That was shot on Wall Street- in the background is Trinity Church. Great cover, funky & trippy all at once.
  10. Those are the guys I unleash streams of profanity at when I'm driving.
  11. Lasik- I can't get around wearing contacts! The thought of sticking my finger in my eye twice a day is too much for me. I started wearing glasses when I was 8(51 now), prior to the contact lens revolution and I never got off the glasses. Even now, at the very rare times I don't have them on, I still push them up my nose!
  12. I'm a Yankee fan and it wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks don't make the playoffs this year. There are two young starters(Hughes & Kennedy), one over the hill(Mussina), one now with back problems(Pettite). Sure they'll score lots of runs, but pitching is the name of the game as it always is. Detroit I think will be much better with the addition of Dontrelle Willis and Cabrera, Cleveland will improve, the Angels are very good and the Bosox are the reigning champs. When the music stops the Yanks may be the team without a seat. It should be interesting to see what happens. As I recall, when the Yanks opened the season in Japan they had to do the same thing, play games that counted followed by exhibition games. It's the $$$$!
  13. If you can find the Downbeat from the 70s that had an interview with Miles where he was asked about Al Green and said "Al Green- if that mother***** had one tit I'd marry him!" I'd love to read the entire interview again.
  14. The ending to me was showing that the game remains the same, only the players change. Michael becomes the new Omar, Sidnor as the new McNulty, Carver as the new McDaniels, Dukie as the new Bubbles, etc. When seaon 5 comes out on dvd I'm definitely getting that(I have 1-4) and the watch the whole thing again.
  15. No. this is not a comment on the series finale as I haven't watched it yet. In the penultimate episode when Clay Davis & Lester are in the bar and Clay Davis is starting to spill the beans, the tune playing in the background is Ramsey Lewis playing 'The In Crowd'!!
  16. I was at that concert and it was excellent- Zorn should have asked for a review!!
  17. I have a live one done on Ayler that I enjoyed, and he even plays(IIRC) 'Cherokee' on it.
  18. Any mention whether a new recording will be forthcoming with this music? Sounds great! I believe it comes out on the 18th. I bought it at the gig and I'm listening to it now-very very good.
  19. I found that pretty hard to take also. Of all the kids on the education season, only one is doing OK, when all any of those kids needed was someone to care about them. How true to life unfortunately.
  20. The text under the pix reads like a really bad translation, maybe by a program- weird...
  21. For title alone, 'Gotta Go Upside Your Head' sounds like a winner!
  22. On Friday(2/29) I caught John Zorn at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn. The group was about identical to the Electric Masada group, Trevor Dunn, Marc Ribot(!!!!!!!!!!), Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista(!!!), Kenny Wolleson, Jamie Saft &Zorn. They played new music written by Zorn, and Zorn mostly conducted and played alto sparingly. The music was definitely reminiscent of Electric Masada, and boy was that band tight and intense! I had always thought Ribot was a real good guitarist, but he was absolutely stunning on Friday, causing many spontaneous eruptions of applause and cheering. Cyro Baptista was the mad scientist of percussion, grabbing everything around him and making just the right sound to fit what the rest of the band was doing. My first time at this venue, and it was very nice, low key crowd also. Lou Reed was in the audience. A great night of music in my favorite place in the world-Brooklyn.
  23. ...and now Moss is staying with the Pats.
  24. Hello all, I stupidly deleted an email from Jazzloft that has a code to get 10% off on a purchase of $50+. I want to spring for some Braxton and the code will help. Does anyone remember it, have the email, etc? Thanks much to anyone who can help.
  25. Ha!That's what they would have us believe- the truth is...
