  3. Meade Lux Lewis plays it solo on two tunes on 'The Blues Piano Artistry of Meade Lux Lewis', produced by and with liner notes by our own Chris Albertson. very cool tunes IMHO and I like the sound of it. I think it's more what you do with it than what it is.

  9. My condolences JIm- your dad sounds like a great guy.
  10. Larry, My condolences on your loss. You may be suffering from depression as has been pointed out before. I am a frequent flier in depression, and I know when it's getting bad because I have no interest in music when it's bad. Normally I'm quite passionate about music and I'll talk about it, listen to it, read about it etc. Live music is OK, but playing anything when I'm getting deep into depression just bores me immediately and I start with the same thing as you described, 'what's the use- I know how this will sound- I'm not interested', etc. i hope things look up for you.
  11. Ialways thought there was something cool about her besides her looks!
  12. On Thursday night(5/15) I had an open night when I could go see some live music but I couldn't decide who to see- Henry Threadgill was at Jazz Gallery(Saw him there once before and it was excellent) and Todd Sickafoose(whom I'd never heard) was at 55Bar. I was still undecided as I headed to the subway, so I decided to let the NYC subway decide for me! The station I went to has the 'B' train, which would leave me off near 55Bar, and also the 'Q' train which would leave me off near Jazz Gallery . I decided to take whatever train came first and go to that show. The 'B' train came first, so I went to see Todd Sickafoose at 55Bar. Todd Sickafoose(TS)plays upright bass, and he had a group with Jenny Scheinman on violin. Here's the list of who played in his group: http://www.55bar.com/ There was also a percussionist not listed on the 55Bar website. His music featured a lot of interesting harmony, opening with a slow trombone/violin duet that gradually morphed into some very intense group interplay. TS was also a rarity- it was his group, but he didn't take a bass solo on every tune and really allowed the compositions and the players to shine.Although Jenny Scheinman was the main soloist, everybody in the group got at least one turn to shine and everyone played very well despite playing mostly off charts. At times the music was quite lush and expansive and at other times they were going straight to gutbucket/funky. Jenny Scheinman was featured quite a bit(Ithink she soloed on every piece) and she played great. Her solos were full of passion and she also has quite a bit of technical ability to realize her passion. I've now seen her play in two very different settings, once with Bill Frisell's 858 Quartet and with this group and she was outstanding in both. Many thanks to Todd Sickafoose and Co for a great set of music and for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for 'picking' a great show.
  13. I picked it up(Miles music + Pete Cosey!) and I've given it a couple spins and I very much like what I've heard.
  14. Late also, but CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
  15. On Friday night(4/18) I went to see Reptet with our own Johnny E in Brooklyn, and it was an absolute gas!!! Repter is tight, loose, irreverent, serious and loads and loads of fun. They play with much panache and aren't shy about humor in their music. They're such a great contrast to some of the (very) stuffed shirts we have out there trying to sell jazz as museum music that must be always serious. Repte has a terrific 4 part horn section, trombone/tuba, trumpet and 2 saxes, all able soloists with ideas and some fire in them. Twice during the set they walked out of the venue and onto the street, playing on 7th Avenue in Brooklyn! Add a fine bassist(acoustic & electric) and our own Johhny E doing a great job of smackin' the skins and we have a formula for great music that is not formulaic! I only had one regret- Repete only played one set. Also at the gig I picked up the new Reptet disc, 'Chicken or Beef', which by the title alone shows that they aren't afraid to tackle weighty existential questions. I've given the disc a couple spins and I very highly recommend it.
  16. That Willisau box by Braxton has been expected for quite some time now- I'll believe it when it actually is reissued.
  17. I saw them at Tonic once for a Kermit Driscoll benefit and they were excellent! Frisell seemed to be having a great time and they played as a group rather than a collection of individuals.

    Hi

    Welcome!
  19. He's recorded some with Jeff Beck and Beck is notorious for being extremely picky about his drummers.
  20. Happy Birthday, Allen, I just bought a 'Jews in Hell'
  21. That was shot on Wall Street- in the background is Trinity Church. Great cover, funky & trippy all at once.
  22. Those are the guys I unleash streams of profanity at when I'm driving.
  23. Lasik- I can't get around wearing contacts! The thought of sticking my finger in my eye twice a day is too much for me. I started wearing glasses when I was 8(51 now), prior to the contact lens revolution and I never got off the glasses. Even now, at the very rare times I don't have them on, I still push them up my nose!
  24. I'm a Yankee fan and it wouldn't surprise me if the Yanks don't make the playoffs this year. There are two young starters(Hughes & Kennedy), one over the hill(Mussina), one now with back problems(Pettite). Sure they'll score lots of runs, but pitching is the name of the game as it always is. Detroit I think will be much better with the addition of Dontrelle Willis and Cabrera, Cleveland will improve, the Angels are very good and the Bosox are the reigning champs. When the music stops the Yanks may be the team without a seat. It should be interesting to see what happens. As I recall, when the Yanks opened the season in Japan they had to do the same thing, play games that counted followed by exhibition games. It's the $$$$!
