  1. I'm quite a fan of any rice curry dish at Mam's as well as the spicy, creamy, coconuty soup they have over there. Needless to say, I can't remember what it's called...
  2. Clay Pit is indeed great and good deal can be had during lunchtime and happy hour (when the apps are really cheap). My go-to, assuming I don't pack a sandwhich (and I make good sandwhiches), is usually either Madam Mam's (Thai) or the sushi across the street. It's been sushi lately because I'm cleaning out the fridge for the move. Very little left to eat at home.
  3. Fellas, I leave in just a few days. How about used LP shops (jazz and otherwise)...? B.
  4. I know this is a loaded thing to mention but I write for AMG. I also helped fascilitate the digitization and reissue of the 1972 ICES festival. The first CD of the series, AMM Live at the Roundhouse, came out in March on Anomalous Records. The ICES reels were donated to the Richard F. Wright Jazz Archive at the University of Kansas in 1972. When Harvey Matusow and Eric from Anomalous contacted the archive about releasing the sessions in 2002, I was the managing archivist. Good thing for them, because no one on the administration gave a shit. So I had to really dig and scrape to make it happen. Thanks go to Chuck here as well for providing some good advice along the way.

  6. My buddy Andreas is from Stockholm so I'm pulling for Sweden. C'mon fellas....
  7. I just sent this correction to Chris at AMG.
  8. I have the LP, so I can only venture a guess here. On side b, the first track takes up considerably less wax than the second, leading me to believe that your six/thirteen guess is probably correct.
  9. Watched Gabbo today. It was amazing (again). You're right. I still say that season 4 is the best, though. I mean damn, it might as well be a 'greatest hits' set... Episodes: Kamp Krusty, A Streetcar Named Marge, Homer the Heretic, Lisa the Beauty Queen, Treehouse of Horror III, Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie, Marge Gets a Job, New Kid on the Block, Mr. Plow, Lisa's First Word, Homer's Triple Bypass, Marge vs. the Monorail, Selma's Choice, Brother from the Same Planet, I Love Lisa, Duffless, Last Exit to Springfield, So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show, The Front, Whacking Day, Marge in Chains, Krusty Gets Kancelled
  10. That jacket is amazing!
  11. Wanna see something really scary...? Type your phone number into Google in this format: (222) 222-2222. Yeah. Anyone in the world (with Internet access) can not only get your name but a map to your house!
  12. He did several Talking Heads songs at the 1997 show.
  13. I order this kind of stuff from Turntable Lab waaaay more often than Dusty Groove. Their reviews are hilarious and they offer audio samples to boot. Look for the "Funk in the Trunk" section along the left-hand side. These guys are definately more hip hop-centric in their view of things but they know their stuff....
  14. Martina had every right to give it a shot. The fact that she bowed out early says good things about the current state of womens tennis which, anymore, I find considerably more interesting than the fellas. I wish I could say otherwise--no disrespect to the ladies--only because I miss the rivalries of the 70's and 80's. Even Agassi/Sampras was interesting in the 90's but nothing like that is going on anymore...
  15. Me? I've seen Bottle Rocket a few times already and it is indeed great. What attacts me to his later efforts is his more Bunelian tendencies and I don't see as much of that in Bottle Rocket. Interestingly, a local theatre here screened Bottle Rocket over the winter and preceeded it with the oroginal black and white shorts they made to get funding for the "real" one. I'm surprised that this footage didn't make the DVD.
  16. Yeah, "Hikky-Burr" was on the Smackwater Jack LP.
  17. You're probably right, though I'm not sure that was the most tactful way of bringing it up, Kevin. I'm a librarian--not an engineer--and have only taken on learning the digital side of audio preservation in the past year or so. My training is in methods of housing, degradation, etc. With this in mind, you need to understand that the "snapshot" theory makes quite a bit of sense to quite a few people; as not everyone in the world is an engineer. I would appreciate more information on this topic if you can recommend something. My friend gave me a copy of Mastering Audio by Bob Katz as a going-away present the other day. He made it sound like a good guide and would often refer to it during discussions of things like dither, etc. In any case, I was unaware that we had so many engineers on the board until this thread and look forward to learning from all of you. Good day.
  18. This has turned into a really intesting thread. Wow...! I don't have any cool dirt. I did some psychedelics in the very-early 90's and can count on one hand the total number of times. Never did coke or anything of that ilk. That shit creeps me out. Last time I did a psychedelic was over ten years ago (and I'm 30). That was enough. Never had a bad time, I got what I needed to get out of it, and I prefered to keep it that way. I haven't been able to smoke grass in ages either. Makes me too self-conscious. It's a *special occasion* thing for me anymore and almost always involves either playing or listening to music. On the rare occasion that I smoke grass in a social situation, it invariably involves me thinking of a sound in my head and really wishing I was near a tape recorder so I could get it down on tape. Pot is an aural stimulant for me. Period. It has nothing to do with "just hanging out". My ears and brain are too sensitive to even the slightest sound. For example, in pre-school I used to listen for patterns when my mother had the dryer on: ba-doo-ba-dunk, ba-doo-ba-dunk, ba-doo-doo-ba-dunk, ba-doo-ba-dunk, etc. Sure, it means I'm no fun when I'm high but I wouldn't give that up for a million dollars. And I think it makes me a better musician, despite my lack of formal training. On the other hand, it also makes me too sensitive to just "chill out" when I'm high. I pay too close attention to things. So I don't really do it anymore.
  19. Damn, Jim.... I thought you'd turned into Dick Vitale for a second there. Imagine that eulogy: "Are you kidding me?! This guy and death is an M&Mer, baby! A mismatch! I mean he was awesome with a capital 'A', baby! He's an all Rolls Roycer!" B) Anyways, if was to chose anything it would be Mary Lou Williams "It Ain't Necessarily So" since that tune, from the opening seconds, sounds like it's about to fade away into a ghostly haze at any moment. So beautiful...
  20. I used to have a show called This is Our Music wherin I profiled a particular artist, genre, instrument each week. It was a lot of fun and keeping it limited to just an hour meant it wasn't too taxing on the listener if they weren't completely into the subject matter. Also, I did not limit myself to jazz. These were my topics (by week)... **late-2000** Week 1: Ornette Coleman: This is Our Music Week 2: The Story of the Mekons Week 3: Solo piano works: Jazz and Concert, modern and postmodern Week 4: John Lurie: Lounge Lizards, Nat’l Orchestra, and Film Scores Week 5: Odd or Otherwise Interesting Covers Week 6: King Tubby and the Roots of Dub: The Modern-Primitive Sound Week 7: Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and Lee Konitz Week 8: Elmo Hope and Herbie Nichols: Under-Appreciated Giants Week 9: American Tone Poems: Ives, Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Marion Brown Week 10: The Hammond B-3 in Jazz: Jimmy Smith, Freddie Roach, and Larry Young Week 11: Jazz Interpretations of Themes by Thelonious Monk Week 12: 33 1/3 Years of the Red Krayola: The Story So Far Week 13: Odd or Otherwise Interesting Christmas Songs Week 14: Bobby Hutcherson: His Contribution to the Early Avant-Garde **early-2001** Week 1: Smile: The Partnership of Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks Week 2: Marc Ribot: Sideman, Leader, Solo Week 3: An Avant-Funk Retrospective: Joe McPhee, Art Ensemble of Chicago, etc. Week 4: Bola Sete Week 5: Jackie McLean: Destination . . . Out! Week 6: Remembering John Fahey Week 7: The Psychedelic Sounds of the International Artists Label: 13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy, Lost and Found, The Golden Dawn, etc. Week 8: His Name was Albert Ayler Week 9: The Soft Machine: Canterbury Tales Week 10: [Guest Host: Steven Yantis] Week 11: Grachan Moncur III: The High Modern Sound Week 12: Eric Dolphy: The Ultimate Sideman Week 13: Down to Earth: The Early Works of Sun Ra
  21. That makes two of us. I don't ride motrocycles but flying has definately become less cool in recent years. I may or may not have my last girlfriend to thank for this because she really had a hard time on planes. As for driving fast, I gave that up several years ago because it's not worth the ticket/insurance. Which is to say nothing for it being flat-out irresponsible. In any case, a kindered soul indeed...!
  22. I agree. Those reviews are a little bombastic at times. More than anything, it's great to hear that there are (apparently) so many *fantastical* moments: dolphins that swim alongside the boat and are "part of the crew", cutting the boat in half so as to see the rooms inside, etc. Sounds really wild. As for Tennenbaums vs. Rushmore, I had a similar reaction to each when I saw them in the theatre. In both cases, I could tell within the first two minutes that I was in for something special. (And, believe me, after having loved Rushmore as much as I did, I was quite relieved when this feeling happened again at Tennenbaums since my level of expectation was through the roof.) I don't know if it's the fact that I've seen Rushmore too many times or perhaps that I'm now over 30 years old but anymore I'm beginning to think that Tennembaums is the better of the two. I don't know. I may disagree with this statement tomorrow. In any case, you should definately check out Tennenbaums as I thinks it's at least as good as its predecessor. And Hackman is absolutely priceless. I think you'll find that they really took it up a notch as far as set design and costume design are concerned. you can imagine my excitement when I read that these traits are even more promounced in The Life Aquatic...supposedly. As a little bonus, my brother (a graphic designer) pointed out to me that the Tennenbaums font--the one used in the credits, as well as on the box/poster/etc--reappears throughout the film on items in the background (ex: the signage at the harbour, the side of the ocean-liner, etc). So look out for that as well...
  23. I doing alright but I'm only 30. I ride my bike to work everyday and eat big salads for dinner sereval times a week. My main problem now is stress. I have a very difficult time sleeping and have noticed tighness in my upper back. I'm sure that once I finish my degree in August and am back to making more than $14,000 a year I'll be fine. For now, though, it's pretty rough. Especially since I'm sending out apps and don't know where I'll be in September... EDIT: By the way, if you've ever wondered why people who earn a poverty-level salary are prone to crime and violence it's because it f*cking sucks. Period.
  24. I agree. It all comes down to bit and sample rates. This is why arguments refuting anaglog as the ideal format to house audio are ridiculous.....in theory. There's a practical side to this argument as well. CDs are quite convenient and you don't have to worry about pops and scuffs. And, for most people--quite understandably--a 16-bit 44.1K CD is just fine. Fair enough. Needless to say, I agree with Upright Bill when he says that people tend to think that CDs sound better as a result of there being no surface noise and don't really undetstand that digitized music involves a series of *snapshots* (e.g. the sample rate). By definition, then, you're only getting a portion of the analog feed. SACDs, of course, can accomodate higher bit and sample rates. Not exactly late-breaking news. You guy already know this. Still, it baffles me that people continue to argue in defense of CDs with this in mind.
