What's the history of this recording exactly? I know there was a single disc on Fantasy and then the double LP on Aritsta (which is what I have). Was the Arista double the first appearance of the other material?

If I remember right, he's also on Andrew Hill's Smokestack (which features some amazing bowed bass on "Wailing Wall").

I mowed a lot of lawns to Rush in junior high school and I have them to thank for my introduction to odd time signatures in rock but, at the end of the day, they're dangerously close to Spinal Tap in my opinion.
-
I saw him a few weeks ago at the Brotzmann show.

It's the same guy, Aric. I'm not a parcticularly big fan of his music or his crew (Definitive Jux) but I imagine this could be interesting. What I'd really like to see is a Blue Series hip hop collabo with someone more rooted in old school beats. My guess is that Parker/Shipp/etc would sound really cool over someone like DJ Premier (who's no stranger to dissonant piano loops).

Guess who I sat next to at the Jackie McLean show

Yea, no kidding! I didn't know they were playing again. -
'THE OFFICE' (season two)
Brandon Burke replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The details of the US version have been announced and are available here. Steve Carrell, who is slated to play David Brent, is definately funny but I'm more than a little worried about this. US comedies, especially those on the major networks, pretty much beat you over the head with punchlines (which is to say nothing for laugh tracks). Here goes nothin'.... -
Revenant has been issuing certain items in the back catalog on vinyl lately including the Harry Smith Vol. 4 and the Stanley Brothers Early Recordings comp. May or may not have issued the Taylor as well but I suppose it's worth a check.

You and me both, brother. For whatever reason, Expedia is always the cheapest (as far as I've experienced, anyways). And yes. If you jot down the flight number and go directly to the airline's website you can usually save a few bucks by cutting out the middle-man. I'm sure you're right about the three-way plan but I didn't imagine it would be $360(!).
-
Yeah, that thought occurred to me as well.
-
Hey folks. I literally--and by this I mean the real meaning of the wrod 'literally', not the more figurative sense that many people mean when they say 'literally' (ex: "I mean this guy was literally like nine feet tall!")--have been looking at flights online for several hours now. I can't seem to find a three-way flight from Austin-to-Kansas City-to-DC for under $360. I feel like I've looked everywhere (Expedia, Hotwire, Orbitz, Travelocity, the individual airlines themselves, etc). Either I was naive about the price that such a flight pattern would involve or shit got expensive really fast.

Paging M. Hulot.....

Indeed. I still intrigued by the way that Tati came to increasingly enjoy faking out the audiuence as his career continued. This really came to a head in Playtime wherin there are a number of false Hulots, actions that appear like they are going to be the "primary" action sequences on the screen (but, in the end, are not), and especially the (frankly quite avant-garde) nightime window sequence. I love the way that Tati sets up the viewer and leads him to believe that there is going to be a quasi-striptease (through the two apartments) but ultimately doesn't deliver. Instead, he allows the guy with the dog (and the broken nose) to become the primary action; leaving behind the the striptease that he so carefully set up, as if to say "Yea, I could have gone there but.....y'know". The more I think about it, the more I want to go back on Thrusday. -
My buddy Ben and I decided this is because of the liberal helping of celery seed they include in the sauce. BTW: when I was home over Easter weekend, I brought back 6 bottles with me. As for the sodas, any self-respecting BBQ fan knows that, depending on availability, you either get (1) a strawberry soda, (2) a "red" soda, or (3) and orange soda to accompany your meal. It's a simple as that.

Well, I'm with you regarding the Texas stuff--I'm not really a fan--but I don't really like the Memphis/Carolina style either. As you might have guessed from my avatar, I'm originally from Kansas City and them roots run deep. Any other kind of BBQ tastes weak to me. Texas-style is indeed too sweet (for me) and that thin sauce in Memphis is just too watery. Plus, I appreciate the KC emphasis on beef, especially burnt ends. It is my opinion that Arthur Bryant's has to be among the best in the world. I always go whenever I'm back home.

Ineresting you say this because Playtime takes his anti-technology thing to an almost depressing level....that is, until the restaurant scene wherin humanity gloriously and hap-hazzardly triumphs! -

[Repost from the Film Corner] I just got back from seeing a gorgeous 70mm print of Jacques Tati's Playtime. I had already seen it several times--I'm something of a Tati fanatic--but never on the big screen. And it's a significant difference, especially with so much going on at once. His films never fail to put me in a fantasctic mood. I think I might see it again before the screening is over on Thrusday night... -
I don't really care for either of those guys but I did enjoy the VH1 special (with Trey and Dave) about Orchestra Baobab as well as the second song Dave played (again, with Trey) on Saturday Night Live a few months back. A buddy of mine in Brooklyn and were on the phone the next day when one of us finally fessed up and said, ".....er......um.......I know you're think this sounds lame but....." We were both in agreement after all. It was pretty funny.

Smoking Ban passed in Austin,TX
Brandon Burke replied to Soul Stream's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It never actually happened (or it passed but is stuck in red tape). One of the two, and probably the latter. Personally, I like to have a smoke when I'm out having a drink. And that's about the only time I ever do it. That said, however, I really enjoy the fact that my clothes don't stink when I come home from going out in NY. For this reason, I find that, nine times out of ten, when I go out somewhere in Austin, I find a place where I can sit outside: somewhere with a patio, beer garden, etc. -
So did you guys get these CDs yet or what...?
-
Yeah, I think it would be hard to argue against that.
