I read about this a few days ago and am something of a Smile nerd. I've got several mixes from varying master and "working" reels so you can imagine my surprize when I heard snippets of the UK Smile tour on NPR. These new performances sound remarkably close to the originals. I mean even "Ms. O'Leary's Cow" sounded the same. (That's the one with the sirens and the creepy John Cale/VU strings.) I'm bummed that the version that's coming out is a new recording but, judging from what I heard of those UK shows, it should still sound pretty good. No Carl though....

Also, I still say that the time it takes to switch CDs on a multi-disc player or take one out to replace it with another is enough time to forget what you were listening to before. I mean, in theory, that's the origin of the "A/B" term; that you switch back and forth between concurrent streams funneled through the same reciever.
-
I think you're misunderstanding me. All I'm saying is that a true test would need to be conducted on an identical CD player (be it the same player or another just like it). That's all....

Interesting responses. My assumption was that a *true* A/B whould be pressing [play] on two different playback devices at the same time and then switching back and forth with your reciever. I guess I have a different idea. Anyways, thanks for the replies. I have always been curious about how exactly you guys compare fidelity between diffrent recordings. Apparently, there is a greater difference between TOCJs and RVGs than I thought. I don't know. I buy LPs and US reissues. I still say that from an audiophile prespective--which is the point here, right?--that using different CD players corrupts the results. Brandon

I got a 15G number when I bought my iBook a couple of weeks ago. Figured I should take advantage of the student discount while I'm still elligable. I love it.

Happy birthday Chuck Nessa!
Brandon Burke replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Betcha didn't know this.... You share the same birthday as Steve Garlett. Who's Steve Garlett? My best buddy in pre-school. (Why I remember his birthday is beyond me.) In any case, have a great birthday, Chuck. I'm having a Rolling Rock in your honor right now.... -
Dona and done. Wolves seal it (no...not the Premier League Wolves). I was going for Sacto but am not at all bothered by a Minn win. They deserve it. Kevin and Sam came up big. Hell of an ending....

Let me get this straight... When you guys "A/B" different CDs does this mean that you have two entirely seperate yet identical CD players? Seems to me that that would be the only way to get an accurate representation. If not, then what exactly are you comparing? Sounds like two different mastering jobs through two different CD players to me. Just asking...

I just did a Google search (4:45pm CST) and it seems a number of people on a number of different message boards are scratching their heads over this one.

[ARSCLIST] Highly unorthodox cleaning methods for LPs...

I finished "The Element of Crime" last night and WOW ... not only is the look of the movie fantastic, but the plot was great, too. I don't want to be a spoiler, so I'll just say I love that kind of added twist in the story line. Re "The Kingdom": I've been waiting for that to pop up on Netflix ever since the Stephen King version came out, and so far no luck. Has that been released in the states yet? As far as "rough stuff": my wife and I also saw "Bowling for Columbine" this weekend and she literally could not sit through that. I barely could. The video from inside the high school was unbelievably horrible ... my heart was in my throat during the whole scene. And Heston at the Denver NRA rally was just disgusting. This should be "must" viewing for everyone in this country. Yea, man... The Element of Crime was my first Von Trier experience however many years back. Again, I remember thinking "thank god Emily isn't up" while I as watching it. While I agree that Columbine is definately "rough", my thoughts were more more directed towards the outwardly violent sexual situations portrayed in Element. I mean, damn... It's one thing to be next to your girl during a scene like those in Columbine. It's another thing to be in the same sitaution during a forced sex scene on the hood of a car... I should add that I cried in the theatre during the security camrea scenes in Columbine when I saw it in the theatre. As for The Kingdom: you'll likely not find it on Netflix, which is my biggest argument against Netflix. They seldom have the kind of stuff I actually want to see, unless I'm in an Old School mood (which happens from time to time). We're lucky in Austin. There's some amazing rental places down here. In fact, my favorite shop's copy of The Kingdon II is a Japanese DVD (with English subtitles) which, I'm sure, says volumes about its genaral availability. Good luck...

My guilty pleasures are mostly Brit-pop. Everything else I can owe up to without too much of an argument. That said. I still very much enjoy the first Stone Roses record and Ride Nowhere.

I caught up on the CTI sound late. I can't do most of it but Bob James "Nautilus" and "Mardi Gras" are amazing.

Jazz tunes that should be played insanely LOUD
Brandon Burke replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
* Mingus "II BS" * Bob James "Nautilus" * George Russell "Ezz-thetic" * Lonnie Smith "I Can't Stand It" * Eric Dolphy "Hat and Beard" * Brigitte Fontaine & Art Ensemble of Chicago "Comme a la Radio" * Freddie Redd "The Thespian" * Jackie McLean "Climax" -
I appreciate the note but, to be honest, I've been hooked on Jackie for many years now. I was only new to Right Now becasue, like I said earlier, I prefer Jackie in at least a 2-man front line. Thanks though... Brandon [EDIT] BTW, I completely agree about Action. That one's been on the top of my "what should BN reissue next" list since I joined the BN board. Of course, I have the LP and will likely not buy the RVG. Still, I think others should have the opportunity to hear it for under $20.

Analog recording and analog pressing? Who engineered it? Albini? Weston? Strangely, I listen to the Volcano Suns much more often than Mission of Burma, though I certainly love MoB. I should also add that my buddy Zippy who runs a record shop in Lawrence, KS has the original pieces of notebook paper used on the Horrible Truth record. Go figure...

We're really lucky here in Austin to have organizations like the Epistrophy Arts group that are willing to put forth this kind of an effort. The shows are always good. Thanks, PG. Brandon

Questions about Washington DC?
Brandon Burke replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I went there in 2000, during my only visit to the city. My brother and I were the only people in our group who wanted to go. Needless to say, it is a very moving experience indeed. -
What ever happened to the Larry Sanders DVDs? It's been almost two years since the first season came out. I'm worried that the first season sold poorly, meaning that HBO/Columbia probably said the heck with releasing any more. They're on syndication sometimes but always at a wierd hour. Besides, the inner 15 year-old in me really gets a kick out of Artie's vocalbulary. And, quite obviously, they cut that stuff out on standard cable.

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Brandon Burke replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I should add that some recordings sound great played at the same time. Especially unaccompanied pieces or ones with very stark instrumentation. We used to do this on my old radio show in college. Among others, we once played Eric Dolphy's "God Bless the Child" over a Morton Feldman piano piece. -

I do have two turntables and, just for kicks, I cued up both Some Other Stuff and Ballads. Turns out they don't sound so hot together.
