  1. Very simple. Buy a bunch of clear mylar lp jacket sleeves and store records outside the jackets. Storing the LPs outside of the jackets is definantely a solution (for future damage). Whether the sleeves are mylar or poly is totally irrelevant in this case, though mylar will react less with acidic cardstock. This is more of an archival decision.
  2. It was stored on shelves that were too tight with LPs. That's the only way to create ringwear. Regardless, ringwear is secondary to the condition of the vinyl surface.
  3. I went back today and bought the Criterion of Solaris.
  4. I agree with most of this. I'm a considerably bigger Gene Clark fan than I am any of the individual members of the Byrds (including Parsons). In fact, I like Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers and The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark more than any straight Byrds release. Perhaps this is because he's a fellow Kansan. In any case, Clark wins out over Parsons with me mostly because Parsons is just too hokey for me. I used to love him but my tollerance for that kind of thing dwindles with age. For the same reasons, I can't really get into Will Oldman (Palace Brothers, Palace Music, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, etc) as much as I used to either, though I was at a cookout with him a week or so ago and was quite enthralled with his choice of fashion: a thin white V-neck t-shirt, no shoes, and O.R. scrub pants rolled up to his knees. In anycase, I agree. Clark's my boy too.
  5. Not to be nitpicky, but is the 13th the last day of the sale, or the last day of business? I'm certain Lon beans both. I can't imagine they'd remain open offering items at regular price. I went there today and bought very little. There was a lot that I wanted and a number of things tempted me. Alas.....I am but an achingly poor grad student so I picked up DVD copies of The Apartment and Irma La Douce. Personal favorites of mine. My grand total was something like $21. Pretty good deal. Now that I know there will be no further discounts, I might rethink that The Third Man Criterion I've had my eye on for months. B)
  6. The combination of your question and your avatar is absolutely priceless. (No, I don't know when the last day is.)
  7. As most of the Austinites on this board know, the Tower on Guadalupe is closing. Starting last weekend everything was 20% off and, as of this morning, it's up to 30%! I'm going as soon as I get off of work today to grab a couple Criterion DVDs. I'll wait and stock up on their unpopualr titles when the discount gets higher.
  8. Thanks. By the way, I "goofed" in that last post. I meant to say that the Intuition liners make "C Minor Complex" sound like something that was recorded in the 70's. Is this the case, or was it recorded for but ultimately left off of The New Tristano?
  9. Be careful with that stuff. Noise reduction often takes out parts of the signal that you'd just as soon keep. I haven't used the Jam NR application but I do have it both at the lab and at home. At the lab we use Waves Restoration but it ain't cheap. The de-clicker is pretty nice and allows you to not only hear the corrected signal you're producing but also isolate the sounds you're taking out. In other words, you can listen to only the clicks and pops being removed (and check for signals you don't want removed in the process).
  10. Perhaps my favorite helmet in the sport.
  11. The Rhino CD has a tune called "G Minor Complex" but the Intuition liners refer to "C Minor Complex". Same thing? A goof? Either way, this is weird because the above quote makes it sound like the recording was made quite a ways prior to 1962. Complex indeed....
  12. I would, however, recommend KU uber-bust, Lester Earl, as Sonny Rollins....
  13. First of all, Snoop is a moron. Period. And I'm probably a bigger hip hop fan than anyone on this board, so it's not for a lack of modernity on my part. Among other reasons, how can his Southern drawl possibly evoke Miles? Gimme a break.....
  14. I was making a Tristano School comp for someone on faculty tonight and ran across this line in Terry Martin's liners to the Intuition CD: "When Lennie died in 1978, after recording amongst other riches, his solo piano masterpiece 'C Minor Complex', he would leave the legacy of his students." Is a recording of this piece available (OOP or otherwise)? I mean, I don't mind at all hunting down an LP. That's what I do.... B)
  15. No shit. Strangely, my team growing up was the Chiefs (since I'm from Kansas City). I used to work at Arrowhead Stadium too. Speaking of which.....are they supposed to be any good this year? I slowly fell off the NFL wagon so I'm pretty well out of the loop by this point. It's mostly just baseball and NCAA hoops for me.
  16. You're not alone, friend.
  17. .....with Jackie McLean.
  18. I hate to distract from an otherwise playful thread with something heavy but this shit about naming teams things like the "Indians" and "Redskins" is seriously f*cked up, man. Anyone who's spent time around Native Amercians (work, school, etc) will tell you the same thing. It's not a matter of being PC, it's a matter of not not being a dick about it. You guys are all bright enough to laugh at this stuff for the right reasons, so please know that I'm not directing this post to any of you in particular. It's the whole scenario in general that pisses me off and sends me into storming rampages like this one. (Sorry, by the way.) Reminds me of an add that appeard in Sports Illustrated in the 80's:
  19. Looking at AMG just now, I noticed that they changed the name of "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" to "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Dream". I had a feeling about that one. There's no way they'd have been able to pull that off. Never heard Murray Street but it was supposed to be good. I have a hard time keeping up with these guys anymore. Saw them a few months back and was amazed by how much room they give Jim O'Rourke (at least live, anyways). He was all over the place and played an exceptionally cool bassline on.....er.....something. I literally didn't know a single song all night other than the encore "White Cross". Enjoyed the show all the same.
  20. I had forgotten how amazing that album cover is. Wow....! Don't remember Quine being on this one. I'll definately dig it out so I can give it a spin tonight.
  21. Yea, my friend just sent me an article about this. Bad news.....
  22. I haven't heard this record in ages but I'm familiar with the lineup. Yowza....!
  23. You took the words right out of my mouth. This record is an absolute gem! My favorite performances on wax by Flanagan, Grimes, Haynes, or Kirk.
  24. Very fun show. This guy (at 62) is an absolute force and is very clearly enamored with the world of *sound*. Perhaps fittingly, when I unlocked my bike from the rack--producing a number of clings and clangs in the process--it brought a smile to my face. In perhaps the only serious moment all night, he made sure to mention the loss of Steve Lacy.
