LF: Mulligan CJB set on Mosaic
AmirBagachelles replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Alex - thanks, I sent you a PM -
I must be a mole to have missed the primary release from Mosaic. Unexplainable, though reading their occasional flier would have helped. Anybody willing to part with one for cash or trade, please get in touch. Thanks, Dan

Entirely off-topic, but I must add a plug for those TCB - Swiss Radio Days discs!! The four that I have (TJ-Mel Orchestra, Blakey 1960 JMs, Louis Hayes, and Mulligan CJB) are all blazing, really well-recorded, and amazingly still in print at fair prices. I want to hear more. Cheers

I reckon I been here in Brooklyn w/ my head up my ass to not know this Charles I confess to havin' and listenin' to CDRs of the big set (though I bought/own the box, the booklet, and LPs I-IV from Mosaic), for about a FUCKING DECADE while much of this glorious set stays OOP, but I aim to be an honest man by BN Corp. someday, that is if the masterin' is right.

Did the remasterings for the BN reissues of Live at the Vanguard, Central Park North, and Consummation eliminate the cheesy reverb? And has anybody heard of potential plans by BN or Mosaic to reissue the other two Solid State LPs? thanks, Dan

For anybody.... Is the material on the Tristano set available individually and legitimately? Is $200 ($33/disc) a fair price or merely an ebay-like price? Thanks, Dan

For those willing to brave a rough aud for true gold, 11/8/70 is worth your time. At this point, there is apparently a blended mix of 2-3 auds that has been patched and tricked out to the extent possible. I know it from 20 years ago, before digital magic, and it was a great car cassette. 1970 is the Dead's coolest year for my ears, their multi-apex of weird, roots folk, and pounding psychedelia. Can't get enough of the good. As my wise taper friend Gary used to advertise "Have 2000 hours, need more."

hey clem I'd say you're about right, the high points and the songs. Big highs $1000 wedding. i don't see them as surpassed by any of their imitators (see Velvet Underground), that's my standard for greatness. my two cents on the real shit? I probably wouldn't know it if it got tangled in the hair in my ugly old ears. No, not a purple riders fan, saw them past their glory with JG sitting in, I like maybe a tune or three on their first and jer's shred on Take a Letter Maria much later on. Clark and Nesmith I totally get (played No Other in my ear cross country this week), will check out these other recs, I preciate em I do. thanks

The switch to streaming at the Dead's site has been a pain. What's the one application that is easy to use, can capture a stream and save as .mp3, where we specify the save-to folder? I have tried a few freeware and shareware programs (e.g. SoundTap), the functionalities are so fragmented it's ridiculous. I would pay about $15-20 for a really good audio utility program at this point. Also, is speedingarrow easy to use? I see they want users to register on a bulletin board before they are able to download copyrighted content... Do I have that right?? Have they posted the newly streamed snippets from Tapers Section? btw, this weeks Dark Star medley is truly a bomb, finishes with rousing Casey Jones. Worth hearing, great sound.

$15 bucks this week at J&R. Should have been a single disc with the best performances, since most all is duped on discs 1 & 2. Second disc is much more lively. Sound is pure and clean, in my opinion, for an essentially low-fi board. (Bear can do no wrong by me.) It is great to hear an intimate miking of Gram's voice (impressive effort on all the notes) and some very spaced out pedal steel. Bass is down low, enough to get the feel of it mildly shaking the ballroom. This is a great archival release, just to hear these excellent songs performed live, and by the songwriters in some cases. (They kill it on Sin City, on both discs.) This was not a band born to play live, but they sure didn't need the help of overdubs etc. Real professional musicians, not hippie garage band fare. Long live the Flying Burrito Brothers.

I recognize that clip from Spinal Tap. Isn't this right after the scene backstage where the band makes the caterer remove all the blue M&Ms? Just kidding, I know its real. A real life "Hello Cleveland" moment captured on video for all to see and hear. It's funny. It's sad. It's fame and delusion. I smell a reality TV series for Mr. Big-Time, maybe soon to be mr. lounge act. Yessss!

I have big ears, it's either my ADD, lack of critical faculties, or just impatience for repetitive listening.... major exceptions: About once a month I go back to GD's Dark Star (mostly '69-70), Layla, and a Flying Burrito Brothers anthology (there are a few good ones). Great band in my opinion, but like many many groups the 1st two records tell the story (just like the Dominos, and Zep, and The Band, and Television and...). Clem I love their Sing Me Back Home, it's the best version of that fine tune that I know. FBB = transcendent group, the skill and love for fine music is CLEAR. How funny that the Dead, their not-so secret admirers, turn up with good tapes. What else is in their vault????

Newk - Try DP 36 or Steppin' Out, I think these sets are better than what you indicated you were considering, though I confess not to know 3ftV. Of all the vault releases over the past 15 yrs, those two really stand out for me, along with 2ftV. Happy trails, Dan

Sound is EXCELLENT on that '92 show, merely some club/crowd noise (try EQing it down). This was very well recorded, and the performance is GREAT. You can't pass this up if you like this band. I got it free with the trial subscription (along with a nice Robyn Hitchcock record), then cancelled out.

I thought it would be fun to revive this thread with an emphasis on Tom Verlaine. I played the instrumental album from last year, pretty dull, but then I went back to the live half of the Miller's Tale anthology and was re-blown away, so I have been trying to go back and find my old favorite tracks on the few solo records I own, Flashlight and TV s/t. Flash Lightning, Red Leaves, many great song grooves on s/t with subtle guitar noises, dynamics, excellent stuff. I remember now that I held Flashlight in highest regard, no point in ever playing it less than start-to-finish (much like Marquee Moon). TV is a master of mood, amazing capabilities, at age 47 I think I like listening to Adventure now more than Marquee Moon, which by my own reckless overuse is nearly consigned to the classic rock bin of my mind. I have Songs from last year, I will give that a listen for the first time today. I see a few other highly regarded titles are OOP or have been indifferently issued on CD, what a shame. Will we ever get a shot at new reissues of Dreamtime and The Wonder? This is great rock.

Jazz CD/Record stores in Phoenix

Evolution down on Thomas I think. I used to ride my bike there from Lincoln and 48th up in PV. Oh wait that was back in '74. I haven't been there since, it may be gone. -
Be real careful with Tower.com friends, its really Caiman behind the scenes. I had one baaaad experience with Caiman a few years ago, where they debited my card for something they said they had in stock, then stalled me out for 10+ weeks on the credit. My sense is that they used slimy float tactics to build their business, now trying to go legit. (Hey, does that sound like organized crime?) They acquired tower's online business in the bankruptcy process. At this point, no real-time human intervention for customer service at caiman, no real order tracking for anything in-process. Certainly not criminal like the old float scams but enough to be wary of sending them a large order, particularly for hard-to-find stuff (remember Sound City 2000?, ... they might be back, as Sound City Internet). What music are you thinking of buying?
AmirBagachelles replied to BruceH's topic in Miscellaneous Music
a bit of early Laura Nyro on CD, to go with our beloved crusty/cracklin' vinyl -
Contemporary LPs are truly amazing to my ears, and the Art Pepper titles are at the top of my list. I too love Way Out West.

Groove Yard on Claremont in Berkeley is a real treat for me when I visit from NY. Condition of stock is first rate (on par with Jazz Record Center in NY), prices are reasonable (better than JRC), owner Rick Ballard a terrific guy. I've never done well with Amoeba's vinyl in terms of rare finds, or great bargains.

The upstate NY shows in May of '77 altered the course of many lives. They really were quite a string of over-the-top performances, and Barton Hall rips. Under-rated 1st set, check that out too.
