  1. I wasn't aware that Zappa tried to wash away original MOI drums/bass on We're Only In It for Money, only was aware of same for Reuben and the Jets, for which Ryko's in-print edition still has the revised parts. I didn't experience enough Zappa on vinyl in the 70s to want to go back and hear the difference, but I will say that the original MOI and 70s Zappa groups sound like good, passionate performers, but much of Zappa's live music in the 80s sounds like it was performed by robotic virtuousos, the kind who fronted many a Boston/midwest hair band (e.g. Rush). There is some humanity missing among the synth-y flash. My pitch for FZ: Regardless of how he treated his cohorts, Zappa is among the few artistic giants from the the 60s/70s rock era. I recommend all his records except Fillmore and Just Another Band from L.A., up through You Are What You Is. They are all fun and interesting, and feature outstanding instrumental rock and important social/sexual satire. The archival releases coming out now (often mixed by Zappa himself years ago) are top notch too.
  2. Thanks for the heads up on this; I am listening to Roll Call this morning, an all-timer burning session that keeps on giving... cheers, Dan
  3. I can't seem to get through by phone. Is the shop still in biz w/ Rick there everyday? thanks, Dan
  4. What's the significance of "LA" in your "only good" claim? Has this been a contentious issue and who are you putting down by implication?
  5. I'm a sherpa on workman's comp; I was recently injured in multi-wagon accident. Let me tell you, walking around the Himalayas for groceries and daily staples yes that is tough. And now I am learning that in my line of work, telecommuting from home is a real bitch.
  6. The Winterland Oct-78 stuff is essential, especially if you like the post-74 sound. The two latest download releases, complete shows from Nov-79, are probably pretty good but worth waiting on word-of-mouth. I could not fathom why they included a very weak (but the tour's only) Dew on that Fall-79 tour release, and now with the Egypt stuff, I have to wonder how Rhino is picking music for release. 1979 was OK, but in hindsight was a re-development period for the GD's sound and familiarity with their keyboardist. By the Spring of 1980, the band was really blazing again in my opinion (e.g. 5-10-80 w/ Comes A Time, UJB etc). If any of you is feeling really ambitious, look for free aud downloads of the Spring 1980 shows, and a 4 show mini tour of the Southeast in late Nov-1980 (for sure get 11-29 and 11-30-80...).
  7. relatively lowly...partly...largely. All fine adverbs, but not when (mis)used in the same sentence, or the same day. Teeing up some Blackstone Legacy now.
  8. thanks, for trade or $ Dan
  9. I would try to find used B&W 601s on Audiogon or Ebay. They sound fantastic, easy to drive too. Also try www.nsmaudio.com, they make some terrific value-priced small speakers. If you want small, you have the advantage of locating them near your ears, so go for accuracy and imaging. And they have specials from time to time. You can also speak to Cadence/North Country, they know how to help.
  10. I have about 250 jazz titles in mini-LP format that I will be posting here in the next few weeks, about a third are BN, a third are Prestige/Riverside and the rest are a motley including Impulse. If there are titles you have been trying for, but can't find, please PM me. My ask prices will be reasonable (avg. $17, range of $12-22, w/ outliers), hopefully nothing stupid-low or greedy-high. Beyond this sale, another one, a big egg I'm afraid, probably lots of free and out stuff. If anybody wants some of the Hats in jewel cases that are finally being remastered, but reissued in cardboard sleeves (e.g. Braxton's 4cd studio-live Willisau '91), PM me. Cheers, Dan

  12. Organ or did you mean Morgan? And how much of either or both does the set contain? And any cowbell? Cuz that would clinch it for me. fyi, I'm looking for improv-cowbell. I should check the Aaron Copland LPs at the library. I bet those have organ and cowbell, no Morgan though. See you all at the Mosaic checkout counter, seriously I have been totally wigged that the Wilson was going to slip by on me, glad I saw this thread. thanks
  13. I think these were great reissues, great material and best possible sound and its tough to ask for more than that. How many Lester Young titles were there in this series (purple spine, yellow letters)? I have one that I love, called Lester's Blue or something. I am always tempted to buy from this series at used stores.
  14. Cool, straight from the free zenith. Will DMG sell it here in NYC?
  15. Big W's, on route 22 in Wingdale, NY, about 80 minutes north of the GW Bridge. It's certainly the best I've ever had around here. http://www.bigwsbbq.com/nyt2003.htm
  16. Bebop's Heartbeat on Savoy was a great disc, and I liked the early 90s 4 CD Royal Roost series also on Savoy, with all of Sid's banter.
  17. Space Age was a jewel case Chess Mates reissue, original cover used, didn't MCA use the japanese remastering?. maybe I have it backwards. NY, NY was in an Impulse cardboard digipak, also good remastering but cheesy impressionist do-over on what was a good image of the NYC skyline.
  18. My stalwart '87 CD editions vol. 1 & 2 are not too shrill on Sonny's horn, though pretty lifeless on the rhythm section. Headphone listening reveals what a horn-only affair this recording was meant to be... So my guess is that the various remasterings over the past fifteen years (U.S. and Japan) have not provided much improvement in dynamics and clarity, but perhaps warmed up Sonny's tone a bit. Is that right? Thanks, Dan
  19. OM - Rautionaha Sam Rivers - Contrasts
  20. I have an excellent CDR of this, done (by a fellow bb member) from a japanese vinyl edition. I would be happy to send a few out.
  21. The band was reportedly way high, the music is tentative and weird for that time. They played one of the best shows of that era about six weeks before, get 7-08-78 if you don't have it. As usual with official product, it really serves the suits best of all. (FTV 3 = major waste, in my snotty opinion.) I guess the DVD could be cool if we can see the whole Sound and Light Theatre scene. The show at Giants Stadium just before Egypt was really good, as were the Winterland shows in October. I am ready for easy downloads from a big catalog, the band should have its own online by-the-track music store by now.
  22. digital natives: thanks. copy and paste, of course
  23. I just noticed that track 1 and track 2 on a favorite CDR (that I received from a long-forgotten BB member years ago) is really track 1 on the original. (The "fracture" was due to a mis-interpreted quiet passage.) Can I re-rip these two tracks as wav files, and append 2 to 1, thus recreating the original? thanks, Dan
