Thanks. The first post in this thread refers to the Lost Quintet performing into 1970, which I had thought was incorrect.
-
Was the "lost quintet" only a five piece group in the summer of 1969 and then sextet by early 1970? The most recent Fillmore CD is a sextet, refers to the band's "lost" legend. Does anybody know if any substantive pre-release work has been done for a still-hopefully-possible release of the July 1969 Antibes sets?

Why not call Mosaic and ask the mastering question? At the Jazz Record Center this week, there were a lot of great vinyl box sets there at fair prices (e.g. McLean Mosaic, $225, complete Keynote $250). A lot of people including myself are dumping stash and raising emergency cash. I didn't see the Mobley, but the place is flush with product right now, its definitely worth a call.

The Mosaic trade thread
AmirBagachelles replied to Dave James's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Looking for a like-new copy of the Tristano/Marsh/Konitz set (CDs)... Can offer: Miles Davis - Complete Plugged Nickel (CDs, U.S. Sony), like-new Cecil Taylor - Two Ts for Lovely T, like-new Partial Andrew Hill Mosaic vinyl set (w/ box, booklet like-new), LPs all unplayed, includes all except #2 (master take of Black Fire, Smokestack) (can also offer for sale a Japan King pressing of Black Fire, and early stereo pressing of Smokestack) if cash only for the Tristano, please advertise to me via PM, thanks, Dan -
I saw both for sale today, and I believe the concert was recorded in stereo ('63 or so). So I would enjoy the vinyl in stereo, yes? Does anybody here know if the mixes are significantly different? thanks, Dan

Jane Jarvis, Player of Jazz and Mets Music, Dies at 94
AmirBagachelles replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Artists
As a Zinno neighbor in the early 90s, I became enamored of Jane Jarvis' jazz stylings. As a baseball (Mets) fan who longs to this day for ambience between innings, Ms. Jarvis' taste, dignity, and wit set the bar high. -

Shelly Manne: Live at the Black Hawk
AmirBagachelles replied to neveronfriday's topic in Recommendations
The apex/touchstone titles on Contemporary for me are the 50s Art Pepper and Sonny Rollins LPs. Those series are worth a raving post or two or three or a dozen-plus. I sold off my Manne Hole CDs years ago, just couldn't compete with the other 300-400 best of the best (labels, genre) titles out there. Are these Shelly Manne's absolute best? -
In some instance here we are talking about vinyl>CD transcriptions, where you have to cut the digital file into tracks manually. Two people are most unlikely to come up with an identical timing for any given track incl. before/after silence, thus there is probably no reference i.d. for most of our DIY LP digitizations. I will try a few with some of my "old" transcriptions from the 1990s. Cheers

I don't have your answer but I don't believe the success depends on track count and timings. Everybody with an iPhone has been amazed and willing to demonstrate the phone's ability to "listen" to the radio or background noise and correctly identify music. It sure makes MS Media Player's inability, for example, to identify disc one of Mosaic's Buddy DeFranco set PRETTY PATHETIC.

Jazz discs for sale

edits and additions Happy New Year!! -
The all-in cost of public employees, including law enforcement, long ago surpassed the costs of private sector workers. And in Michigan (and soon New York and California), it is already tough if not impossible to pay above-market wages and benefits to civil employees. We need to cut public sector wage and benefit levels, not people. Otherwise there will be chaos.

I view B&W as a great offering at low price points, neutral and efficient. (Could you find some used 601s/602s?) NSM/Kayak might also be a good alternative. You can avoid the mass market brands at $250, consider Audiogon.com or used gear from a local shop that has a long history, and strong word-of-mouth reputation on two channel stereo listening. Also call North Country / Cadence.

I saw him play a bar date in Mt. Kisco NY in the very late 70s, which I thought was a great treat. I always loved Mixed Bag in high school but when I was a freshman in college (Fall '78) a friend turned me onto the The Great Blind Degree, an LP of songs, mostly covers I think, about generation gaps and social isolation. He and his vision/voice remain huge by me.

New Soul Station XRCD Blue Note - out now. Sounds great!
AmirBagachelles replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Caution: Many of us will want to hear/own True Blue, if indeed it is the ultimate CD edition. This is perhaps a top 10 BN session. Is this a limited edition series? -
Tiger Woods in Car Accident
AmirBagachelles replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Tiger should really look into the next leg of his advertising career: selling product placements for spectacular annual car-wrecks. If were say, Carter-Wallace, I would pay a TON to see the tabloids with a photo of a rolled Tiger SUV, with carton of thin-skin maxi ribbed scented love gloves tossed about. -
