Yes great news, thanks. It's a very short list of artists for whom I will endure the Blue Note. Anybody know anything about a possible reissue of Garden parts 1&2?
-
I recently heard the soundtrack to Claudine for the first time, ranks high with my recollections of GN and the Pips' best, for sure. Some funky wah wah in there behind the string flourishes too. Dance-able tunes. Curtis lives!

I would avoid it if you absolutely hate smoking hot salsa infused rock, and hearing (whenever you feel like it) perhaps one of the defining performances of the era/genre. I think it might rank very high in terms of how well it is recorded, too. You got to move it move it.

I see plenty on the bill besides Ornette. I'll start with Galactic, Ralph Stanley, Bromberg, and Gov't Mule. Jeez, there will be plenty for everybody.

What's the Deal with Elton and Rod?
AmirBagachelles replied to Alexander's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm not sure if the first Rod Stewart LP was mentioned, it really is GOOD and WORTHWHILE. I think it goes for about $6 now in cut-out, try it for sure! Rod's first four Mercury albums are nearly matchless for their style and songwriting. In a parallel universe, I am sure Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, and Ronnie Lane are household names, way up high in the Brit-rock pantheon. Rod sure did seem to piss away a lot of his respectability over the years, but who knows what that really means. He seems to be a symbol for lack of tasteful restraint in the 70/80s, if such a thing were possible. I think he just didn't like working for the man (rather, it pays to work for the ladies, Rod might say). I would bet that more than a few of the smart and talented British rockers who had "it" figured out but chose not to cash in -- wish they had. You go Rod. Don't get me started on Elton. I can tell you, without a doubt, in '72-75, he was bloody huge in the U.S., maybe a notch below below Zep but big. It seems hard to believe now, but true. Dan -
A long shot I know, it came out once or twice in Japan some years ago. Cash or trade. Maybe Rhino will do this one someday, I think two cuts made to an anthology. It was a terrific record. Thanks very much. Dan

Herbie's Empyrean Isles was my favorite, along with Stolen Moments as his "moment". I think this was a popular thread on the old BNBB. Freddie seems to have given it up best of all for the other guys; and I really like Ready for Freddie as his best date. oops 70s, 80s... Dunno the work, though I do enjoy Sonic Text.

There's some good posts by David Lemieux in the new tapers' corner on the new Dead.net. Check the week-by-week mentions of the vault's goodies. I note he likes that 11/30/80 show as much as I do. Also gives me hope of more to come from '70. Cheers, Dan

Favorite show = Louisville Freedom Hall June '74, great moments throughout but the depth and range of emotion throughout The Other One, Stella Blue, and Morning Dew is unmatched elsewhere, for me anyway. And Phil especially kills. I wish I could hear more keyboard on my old tape. This would be a great vault release if they could spiffy up the sound. Favorite attended show = Cape Cod "weekend" October '79. A nice cold hockey rink to warm up, with lots of old friends and hot music. I am just picking the first show I saw the band really rip throughout, after about 15 good-but-not-great nights. Oh man, this was different. Blazing Dancin' > Franklin's Tower, Jack Straw and on and on, four consecutive hot sets. No Going Back. (How did I finish school????)

What vinyl are you spinning right now??
AmirBagachelles replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
the great Sam Rivers' Contrasts, ECM 1-1162 -
11-30-80, a smoker. I was down in the "front row" (the orch pit was empty) across from Brent, he was dishing some swirl that evening, try that SB > FOTM, a killer.

You go Lon. Be sure to check out the DS>Dew on DP 36. I have been coming back to 1980-81 for a week or two, I like the Sept 80 download series, excellent, emotive JG vocals throughout. I need to find that Nassau '80 release on arista. The Spring and Sept tours in 1980 were both really strong, and a brief, red hot 4 show tour of the Southeast around Thanksgiving remains below everybody's radar. Great playing on the Gainesville and Atlanta shows, don't miss. If anybody can recommend a good alternative to Media Player, I would be grateful. I can't figure out how to burn tracks (*.wav to CD) without the annoying two seconds in between. Free suggestions are preferred. Thanks, Dan

It's been awhile for me since my days burning audio CDs on the Mac with Toast. Now I use a notebook computer, but I realized after making three live Dead discs that the Windows Media Player won't let me eliminate the 2 seconds btw tracks. (Or will it??) If anybody can recommend a good alternative to Media Player, I would be grateful. I would spend maybe $25 for really good shareware, otherwise free suggestions are preferred. Thanks, Dan

felser get your head out of the sand. they rip people off, charging cards for items they CANNOT obtain. verrry slow on the refunds, it's called FLOAT. you do us all a disservice with your plug for them.

is this all true? cuz I'm not sure if I'm with clem on this or if I feel strongly both ways. probably.

12-31-76 looks a good release, easily programmed to include (for starters) about 85+ minutes of Bertha, They Love Each Other, Playing in the Band, Wharf Rat, Scarlet Bs, Help-Slip, and the Dew. We all gotta buy it, to keep 'em coming. '76 releases can pretty much only surprise on the upside. Check out the feedback on the Oakland shows from October. Regarding '76, I offer this snotty opinion: Reflections may be the only studio record after Mars Hotel that I would recommend. I love it, among our all-time favorite getaway tapes to play in the car driving long hours after a screaming show.

FA: Evan Parker - Monoceros (still sealed)
AmirBagachelles replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm sure Parker will reissue this shortly, yes? -
The '72 NYE from Winterland is pretty nice, from what I recall of the radio broadcast tape. I would assert the '81 NYE at the Oakland Aud was one of the best shows in many many years. Really hot playing, gives a strong case that the Dead were as good as ever on the really blazing nights.

I'm not a hi-fi enthusiast (my one extravagance is Linn Tukan speakers, $400 used), nor a person w/ golden ears. Ambient room "noise", dead air, KICK. I don't hear it through my portable w/ MP-3. It's like Dolby or a cheesy hi-filter circuit, and very un-natural. So I thought the whole iPod craze was a bummer, further propelling Mp-3. I was kind of psyched to learn about Apple lossless however. I think the downside of Steve Jobs" legacy, in addition a generation who badly damaged their hearing at a young age (pronounced "class action"), will be millions of people who forgot or never appreciated spacial detail and dynamics of a good recording. Cheers, Dan

If you can't tell the difference, you need to get your <pick an organ> checked. To me it's as obvious as the difference between analog and digital. Really. MP3 is pitiful, there's something missing. That's why they call it lossy. But if lossy tote-your-whole-stash is your thing, you go dudes. I will abide. I have used the same Panasonic portable CD player with no skip circuit since 1996, with Grado or Etymotic headphones, so this will be step down, yes. But my experiences with lifeless no kick MP-3 have been informed my decision (e.g. live Who Won't Get Fooled Again, Bailey-Holland on ECM), that's why I have waited til 2006. So it's lossless.
