  1. I was listening to something recently, something i sought out and had to get. And it was a real letdown, not much spark. And the notes on the liner indicated that it was a session that a certain label (rhymes w/ contessa) passed on. But what I really liked in the days after listening (it's ok, I will keep it) was to realize was that this session has been discussed on this board, but the founder/namesake of this particular label, who posts here on this BB, didn't trample on or otherwise throw anybody under the bus. Internet discretion, people. That's nice. It's all out there.
  2. Hi I am looking to acquire more by Leo Smith via trade. I especially want Kulture Jazz on ECM, and I am also interested in solid sideman appearances, should any appear on your out-trade pile. For David Murray, I am looking for DIW Japan editions of: Quintet with Ray Anderson and Anthony Davis Shakill's Warrior no-obi = no worry Thanks, I have tons to trade, show me a want list if you care. Dan
  3. I am thinking of that SNL family kitchen sketch where mom, dad, and all the kids pass around the bottle of spoiled milk, each for a good whiff, just to make sure. Whoa!!!
  4. Wow, and so close to April Fool's day. Apparently no joke, DMG has it (www.dtmgallery.com, see latest newsletter link), and I think it is Incus' first reissue since Derek passed away. Evan Parker's Solo Saxophones from 1975 is also out now, on Emanem.
  5. If I heard/read correctly, Mosaic no longer sells those plain 3/4" boxes, damn those were good! Does anybody know where to buy something similar? I will call up there on Monday and see if they will reveal their sources.... damn why does it always have to be those guys with rare things that I want? thanks, Dan
  6. between his talent, his recordings, and the public's current awareness. If you like folk, folk-rock, or just GREAT singer-songwriter's best work, then I recommend you get The Many Sides of Fred Neil, or another good anthology. I listen to the The Many Sides about once or twice a year, usually after I read yet another citation of Neil's influence and talent. I love the authority with which he sings and swings. He's truly one of the best.
  7. Thanks for that link, there is a ton of info there. Says Milwaukee vol. 2 was due for release... And DMG said on the phone that they just got new copies of the Anderson-McCall duo disc today.
  8. I searched for an old thread, surprised not to find one. I have been enjoying Fred's discs off and on since about 2000, trying to go back over the past two weeks and find time to listen to what I have. I really like The Missing Link (esp. track 2 Ballad for Rita), and the second Velvet Lounge set. Come to think of it, I recall liking everything I ever heard by Fred! I don't have the duo with Steve McCall, does anybody know it? Fred really gets his drummers into a groove with his sustained and beautiful flights. I listened to Milwaukee vol. 1 over the weekend (where is vol 2?), it's very intense, typically great Hamid Drake too. I wish there were more of this vintage, but I would like to check out some of his more recent output. Suggestions?
  9. on Between the Lines label from 2000 I believe. (Does anybody know what happened to that label?) I have lots to trade if that is what it takes. If nothing turns up in a few weeks (as in fade to black OOP), would somebody send me a burn of this? Thanks, Dan
  10. Try Groove Yard in Oakland. Rick Ballard (owner) had a few dozen Mosaic boxes on display a few years back; hey you never know. If he still has them, please snag me an Armstrong/Decca or just let us know how it goes. Cheers, Dan
  11. I heard that Dick Cheney's heavy touring commitments to "Up Yours, People" was what really kept him home, safely away from the Vietnam war. Discuss.
  12. Chuck's post suggests that unissued BN 4210 trio music might not have encompassed Taurus anyway. Wow, plot thickens. I really want to hear Taurus. And the ESP-Disk issue is in almost ideal sound to my ears, doesn't seem like the fruits of a reclamation.
  13. sending you a PM re: Oct Meeting thanks, Dan
  14. Fascinating thread. Chuck's info on Clifford Jordan's stash of unissued dates reminds me of another great unissued treasure, the balance of Ornette's Town Hall concert containing Izenzon's epic bass solo, which I believe was largely composed. (Do I have that right?) Let's hope Ornette will one day issue that great concert at full length. For sure, the Blue Note reissues of the Golden Circle records are (for me) the apex of the expanded-edition-CD-era. Those discs are mind blowers. Roll up the windows, turn it up and drive.
  15. thank you Cliff for vol 1! I need volume 2 too. thanks for the comments and suggestions. a rifle shot, about ten years late. But thanks for any heads up. for cash or trade. Also seeking Cecil Taylor solo sessions on vinyl, esp. those never reissued on CD. Cheers, Dan

  17. I believe anybody who likes big band jazz could very well end up IN LOVE with Soaring. I had not listened to the vinyl in 7+ years and so I was a bit slow to hunt down the reissue, though I was aware of it last year. This is a tight 70s studio session, with typical Don Ellis band originality and athletic virtuosity. Deep electric bass in spots and horns very well balanced and recorded, much better dynamics and clarity than the typical sessions from Ellis' Columbia catalog. If you like any of Don Ellis' work, then you definitely need to experience this record. I believe it to be one of his very best. So go for it (I found it at J&R for less than $15, not a lavish reissue but fine sound and thoughtful new liner notes.) More later. Dan

  19. hello I will pay cash or trade for: Duo En Noir w/ Enrico Rava Solo Piano (debut on ESP) perhaps ZYX edition, maybe vinyl? Memory of Vienna (Hat) thanks for any help Dan
  20. I would love to hear/collect all his recordings someday. In more than two years of looking I have not found his ESP debut or the duet with Braxton. There so many more obscure releases as well. Everything I have heard is fantastic. My favorites are That Certain Feeling, a collection of Gershwin, and a pair of solo discs Compleat RB vol 1 and 2. He would be the perfect Mosaic project for many of us, but they know they could not broadly monetize it (per MC). They should however consider some one-off editions, say the Blue Potato Milestone LP.
  21. Studio: Workingman's Dead, Garcia, and Mars Hotel Live: DP from Feb '70 (can't remember which), Live/Dead ('69), Hundred Year Hall or DP-36 ('72), and Without A Net ('90) and by all means go to archive.org and listen to streams of 5-8-77, 5-7-77, 5-9-77, and 7-8-78. or get a friend to get you CDRs of these have fun, and then get busy with Zappa
  22. I think any remaining legitimate role for publishing "critic" was finished for once and all once the social vibe of the internet arrived, 8-9 years ago. I like Chauncey's main point on the necessity of wide and informed perspective, but when he channels Dennis Miller, he loses me.
  23. Matthew don't do it if you want to make a statement against a) fetish-ized archival releases (anybody's vault). it's really stupid, and a thing of this whole ugly winner-take-all era. even more ugly and stupid is "limited edition" marketing. I commend the GD for initially offering that great boxfor a modest price, but I prefer a more low key Dick's Picks approach. b) ebay-driven greed, which glorifies the market price above all. excellent record stores with a business in used goods don't try to extract the last buck on every item, and so turning your back on ebay-type greed could result in fortuitous just-arrived-bin-karma at your local fair-deal independent record store. hey you never know. c) these fillmore shows are out there in circulation in great quality, so enjoy them without the GDM's or Rhino's "product" sanction. it's hard to run with the weight of gold. go out and hear some great live music instead. btw, best new GD show discovery tip from me is 12/26/70, in great quality now on archive.org. Check it out! I have been thinking about these issues as a result of paying out the wazoo for Zappa's expensive vault releases, which are otherwise excellent. I know the Dead made a small sum on the Fillmore box compared to how the ebay scarcity trade has bubbled, I think that makes me all the more willing to speak out against the profiteering. Peace and return-to-real-work in '09!!! cheers, Dan
  24. I think I could live on an mp3 player with nothing but tons of Mingus. In my house, we also love his piano album and Weary Blues. I somehow immersed myself in Symposium and East Coasting on illegitimate CD releases, years before I got into his widely known stuff. Most everything he did had such swinging kick and visceral energy, his music just does not disappoint.
