Rolling Stones' Top Albums of the 1980s
AmirBagachelles replied to Chrome's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The best album of the 80s WAS made in the late 70s. It was Marquee Moon. -
When Ad-Aware finds stuff in your Reg. Key
AmirBagachelles replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Webroot, Lavasoft (ad-aware), Search & Destroy, and PestPatrol. Those are the big four, they work to some degree, and the two nice things about these is that they are somewhat free and unlike AV you don't blow up your system by duplicating their use. Trend Micro will have an excellent pay-for antispyware product ready by the end of Sept, they have the best clean-up tools among the AV companies, but they don't as of yet have the spyware product ready. But they will. -
One thing to consider though is that obsessive CD-mongering is a male thing and can wear on a girl after a while. (Why is that? Lots of chicks had huge LP stashes...) You might want to work a night-out w/ live music routine into your relationship.

Excellent. I found my honey, and she helped me find jazz. Waaay cool. At first, I thought Clifford and Roy and Chet were former boyfriends. Jazz among friends and lovers is huge. Way to go.

Also big news is the extra 90 minutes of the movie, and the fact that it will finally be on DVD, hopefully w/ decent sound. Woo hoo! The '74 edition was a monster. Also, Garcia Band from Kean College Feb-80 is coming out, from a multi-track tape. Great chance for more fans to hear the After Midnight - Eleanor Rigby jam.

Is Jack Gregg still playing in Europe? His wife took up w/ Woody Shaw years ago. Woody was a major d!ck to Jack.

Cecil Taylor w/ Lyons, Rivers
AmirBagachelles replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Thanks Chuck. I've since found a site with details on Shandar, looks like the box came first, tinted LP covers a bit later. I've posted shrugs the Prestige and 2-fer vinyl maven with these questions, I hope to hear from him. -
I am trying to determine whether the Shandar LPs are worth 2-3x the cost of the Prestige box. Does anybody have an informed view on this? Were the LPs (either set) materially better sounding than the CDs I have seen from time to time? Also, the Shandar LPs were both boxed and released individually; are they of the same vinyl in terms of quality and vintage? Thanks

Hat is indeed sitting on a mountain of excellent stuff, this snail's reissue pace is killing me though. In the few years it has taken for Hat to nearly go out of business, my tastes have changed. I want their old stuff! Salty-Swifty I have, and I love it -- highly recommended.

FS: Mosaic Johnny Hodges Sessions 1951-1955
AmirBagachelles replied to Brad's topic in Offering and Looking For...
This set topped out at $500-600 back in the (Ebay) day, went for $200-300 in "normal" times. I would say that CDR and the Blue Moon set have done in its speculative value for now, but that will change. Most Mosaic LPs represent meticulous ANALOG audio documents. They will come back into favor again. -
I agree that Indestructible and Free for All are the standards for that JM era w/ Fuller. But I have to add my little plug for the Impulse record they cut. I think it's really good, and A La Mode is a minor classic.

What non-mosaic box set is tops on your list.
AmirBagachelles replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I second, third or whatever the Plugged Nickel, Kirk Mercury, Mingus Debut, Ornette Atlantic sets!!! But the one that is really blowing my mind is the one that I have never seen, Cecil Taylor Berlin '88. It is astounding, I can't get enough of it, and I have still only heard/purchased about half of it a la carte. Also: Sinatra Reprise and Capitol sets (pick any) Rock boxes: Dylan bootleg series 1-3.... perfection Jefferson Airplane Loves You The Stiff Box The Byrds Roxy Music - The Thrill of It All Ladies and Gentleman, The Grateful Dead (very nifty 4 CD rock set, check it out you won't be sorry) -
LF: Billy Harper "Black Saint" CD
AmirBagachelles replied to undergroundagent's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I just got mine through Netsounds.com a few weeks ago; Bruce at Downtown had told me awhile ago that Harper's Black Saint is one of the few BS/SN titles that never seem to come back into stock. Maybe they are getting it again. -
The Dead never subscribed to or promoted any utopian ideals. Their role, maybe not purposeful, was to cool the scene in SF, from exactly the kind of "revolutionary" tripe the Airplane were draped in. Jerry said it best, that the Dead were about getting stoned. But that statement doesn't go further to describe any particular lifestyle. And the few hundred (sometimes 000s) hardcore tourhounds we saw at every show constituted a small minority of the scene. Jerry died depressed, his death due in part to the cult obligations that was heaped upon him and his band, not because he or they couldn't live up to it. They had no interest in it, as far as I know, after 1970. They wanted to be good and be accepted as a band, and be financially successful. I thought they were always straight with that. By the late 80s, I knew several people who knew a few band members and how the band-fan thing functioned. The organization (that we could glimpse) turned out to be exactly as advertised, very decent people, nothing more and nothing less. Nobody took the band at their word on a vision, there was no word. And long live Grateful Dead music!!

Question: I plug my phone preamp into the 1/8" mic jack on my iMac, I have gotten decent results. Is there another way in thru the USB port or firewire? Does anybody know what kind of sound card an iMac has or is it just a motherboard that is sound-enabled. thx

Has anybody seen Festival Express yet? I am looking forward to it!

Greatest songwriter in last 50 years?
AmirBagachelles replied to wolff's topic in Miscellaneous Music
For rock songwriting, I'll take Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, and Ray Davies. (No individual contemporary of Ray Davies comes close, imho.) Maybe put Elvis Costello on that list. In jazz, I'll take Ornette Coleman. -
This one goes too far.

In the late seventies I saw Park Police scum write tickets for drinking soda, feet propped up on seats or poles, no warnings usually. Yep, lots of angry misfits in those police and paramilitary organizations, eager to dish some abuse. That's why they get called pigs. -

How to spot a rich man
AmirBagachelles replied to Parkertown's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You mean rich like with a large endowment? Or do you mean spiritually rich like he's going to heaven, if not already there? He certainly appears to be clued in to things about which we foolish mortals can only dream. -
I can pay w/ a beaver pelt, beads, old shot glasses, U.S. dollars, or I have lots to trade. Thanks
