  1. Martha is mean, and mean people suck. Who cares if he/she is a woman? She broke the law and she didn't come clean, so now she pays. Know anybody who was ever busted? All you have to do is tell the truth, and generally that will be your lowest price to pay, often just a fine. F*ck Martha and all those who empathize with her victimhood. Everybody in OJ's and Martha's corners are pathetic. We need to send more executive crooks to jail.
  2. Yes I do put 5/8/77 in the ballpark and in the pantheon. Many do. Not uncommon. If someone such as myself, who is experienced from more than 200 '77-'95 Dead shows and is knowledgeable and an active listener, comes out to recommend AN EXPERIENCE such as 5/8/77 to a new/reluctant listener, how can you possibly argue with that? Take the ride.
  3. Listen to the music play. Folks - trust me on this: saying 5/8/77 is not Top 50 material is flat out WRONG. It's Top 10, despite what Latvala said in a published interview. The whole first set is smoke, the Scar-Fire is smoke, the two guitar solos within Fire are unmatched anywere esp. the finale, the Dew solos and finale are over the top. Lots of other fine 2nd set moments too. Once so many 5/77 shows were heard, this idea cropped up among jaded "collectors" that Cornell was somehow a mirage and not worthy of its rep. 5/21 and 5/22? You must be joking. Really. My friends and I thought that Latvala had lost his mind w/ DP3, not because it wasn't 5/8/77 but because it's kind of mellow, an odd choice from a high energy era. There were many great nights for sure, I would also list Binghamton 11/6, Rochester 11/5 and Springfield 4/23. I must also say that as jazz listener now, there is a lot of Dead '77 that to me now is unlistenable, due to a lack of imagination and color in Garcia's playing; his tone was not great either in stretches. By '78, there is improvement and by the Spring of 1980, this is no longer an issue, lots of color and variety in his playing. I hope everyone will someday hear some Fall 1980 and Spring 1981 shows, they were really awesome, and remain very under-heard.
  4. 5/8/77 over-rated? Maybe over-exposed like classic rock. Listen to the first set today and come back and tell us why that is over-rated.
  5. Insider trading is rampant, and very tough to prove and prosecute. When the feds catch you and you don't cop to it, you're gonna pay an even worse "price" than a fine and profit disgorgement. We should all be glad they prosecute whoever they can catch. Stocks move in advance of news all the time, and large and small investors will always get screwed by this phenomenon. So have no mercy on Martha, she should consider herself lucky she hasn't been prosecuted for the thousand other insider trades she has most likely made. If investors know the executives socially, of the companies they are investing in, you can be sure of a high probability of trading on material non-public info.
  6. As a Mets fan, I know how awful it feels when a great player is traded away (see Seaver, Dykstra, we won't get into the Nolan Ryan thing). In this case though, Shaq wanted to go if Kobe stayed, so what is the crying about? The Lakers played the percentage going with the younger player, and the Bulls and Jordan showed what can be done with an ultrasuperstar and B+ centers. I think the Heat can rock. I know Pat Riley will wish he were back on the sidelines, but Van Gundy is intense about defense too, and I don't think NBA coaches contribute a whole lot to offense. Shaq will love Miami, the Caribbean flavor makes it a much more fun environment than L.A. too, in my snotty opinion.
  7. I've had great luck the past two years with most any Carmenere from Chile, for which $15 is toward the high end. Ask about it at your shop.
  8. Just stick to the 69-72 era for a bit of time. If the epic Dark Star jams and medleys don't pull you in, then the Dead are not your movie. btw, have you gotten down with some good versions of Morning Dew? 5/8/77? get somebody to make you BOTH sets of 5/8/77 on CDR and play it a few times through. Also get Hundred Year Hall and of course Live Dead.
  9. 20 bucks says the book deal that Martha's bitch signs will be pretty darn good.
  10. The recent Hat stuff appears to be way over-pressed. There is a lot of it for sale here in NYC. Too bad, because there are a lot of tremendous but scarce titles from <=15 yrs ago that few can find. Garden 2 is around now and then, but if anyone can burn a copy of Garden 1 for all of us, please give a shout.

  12. I'd say $2500 for speakers, and amp and a CD player is all that my ears can get out of it. There is just too much good music to acquire. And I can be happy at just over $1000 too -- NAD & B&W (or pick a good $200-400 pr).
  13. I would guess that the Mosaics are equal or superior to the original pressings, except maybe for Contours and Fuschia Swing Song. Mass produced vinyl was getting pretty noisy toward the mid- to late-1960s. Clearly for half or more of this set, the Mosaic is the only audiophile source, and many people are unimpressed with the CD sound. When Groove Yard and the JRC see this set, they say it always goes for big bucks, believe me I've inquired.
  14. Gone, and that is a great price for a mint set. It's been above $300 many times.
  15. I'm not pulling your leg, it really was posted here in the past three months. I noticed it because about two yrs ago I bought TOCJs of all of the great McLean and Joe Hendersons from Early Records. You might want to try them.
  16. This McLean TOCJ was posted for sale in this thread recently, and it went unsold. Look for it.
  17. One would hope Revenant could keep the price reasonable on this. They are not paying a lot to license anything, and isn't that among the biggest costs usually? I really loved the Jimmy Lyons music on the Ayler Records box, but it was so grossly overpriced it was ridiculous, especially given the poor sound quality on two of the discs. We were gouged in my opinion, paying well above $15 per disc. $10-12 per disc for a multi-CD set is fair when there are no large costs associated with making or licensing the music.
  18. The worst is yet to come: 'Sh!t Happens', a neat little Weir ditty which hopefully will be an "alternate out-take" from the hopefully to-be-issued unfinished sessions from late '89 I believe. Good for a pant-wetting guffaw though.
  19. Speaking of the Dead movie, it should be out finally on DVD in the next 12-24 months, yes? It's a major gas even though they botched the recording of their 10/74 "farewell" shows which the movie captures.
  20. The better/best teams have emerged: Portugal and Greece
  21. does anybody else have this problem: I use ad and pop-up blocking software from Norton which blocks Ebay page content when reached thru a url link (as your thread here contains). If I start from the Ebay home page, no problem. fyi I use a Mac w/ OSX 10.3
  22. What is the beef w/ paypal? Tremendous convenience, it works to buyers' advantage. The 4% is even worthwhile in certain dire instances.
  23. A Heart guy. Who knew?
  24. I think I saw a remark attributed to Dizzy, to the effect that Budd was among the most under-rated or under-recorded of the very best horn players.
