I found 3 posts from "Fledg'ling" in the AAJ thread..... chris mcgregor's septet - up to earth The Chris McGregor Group ~ Up To Earth 1 Moonlight Aloe (Chris McGregor) 10:42 2 Yickytickee* (Chris McGregor) / Union Special* (Chris McGregor) 8:34 3 Up To Earth (Chris McGregor) 7:20 4 Years Ago Now* (Chris McGregor / Louis Moholo) 11:20 Chris McGregor - piano Barre Phillips or Danny Thompson * - double bass Louis Moholo - drums John Surman - baritone saxophone, bass clarinet Evan Parker - tenor saxophone Dudu Pukwana - alto saxophone Mongezi Feza - trumpet Recorded late 1968 / early 1969 this previously unreleased album will finally see the light of day in July on the Fledg'ling label. well actually there is another unissued album... In 1969 Chris McGregor recorded two albums which didn't see the light of day before all energies were directed towards the Brotherhood of Breath project. Both were recorded at Sound Techniques Studio in London with Joe Boyd producing. The Septet set 'Up To Earth' is about to be manufactured for July release. If all goes well we hope to release a Trio set 'Our Prayer' later in the year. Barre Phillips and Louis Moholo appear on the Trio album. I'm unsure if the test pressings that have been mentioned were of either of these albums or a combination of tracks from both projects. A while back I suggested to Joe Boyd that the acetate produced by Polydor back in 1969 contained one side of each of the two unreleased albums. He thought it very likely but couldn't recall why they might have done that. Joe's recollections of the recording sessions and the master tapes are very clear that they were intended as two seperate projects. Here is the track list for the acetate / bootleg as I see it (I've never heard the acetate): 1. Church Mouse 04:26 2. Moonlight Aloe 07:27 3. Spike Nard 07:44 4. Moonlight Aloe 10:47 5. Yickytickee / Union Special 08:44 1-3 would be side A of the Our Prayer, Trio set and 4 & 5 would be side A of the Up To Earth set. A curious arrangement. As far as I've been able to research there was only one acetate - never a second with the two B sides. There's a version of Church Mouse on the White Bicycle's compilation performed by Dudu Pukwana's Spear so somebody might be able to confirm that it is the same tune. This is great news!!

Got my copy today(finally!) for $17.99. Man, this is better than I remember it. In fact it might be my favorite recording by the Blue Notes/BoB. In the liner notes they give a plug for the upcoming Blue Notes box on Ogun. This will definitely hold me over until it gets released.

Ah, thanks. I didn't know about his website.

Maybe his ass swallowed it. As a NL East fan who got to watch Jones a lot this comes as no surprise. Andruw's weight has been going up and his hitting has been going south for the for the past 2 seasons. The only surprise for me was that the Dodgers took such a big chance on him w/ that huge contract. Previous mention from the Hot Stove thread That said, it's still early in the season and there is plenty of time for Andruw to turn it around. Dodger fans cross your fingers.

Update on McGriff.... I saw the following letter to the editor in one of our local free weekly papers in response to an article on Philly jazz from last week. Somehow you neglected to mention the legendary organist Jimmy McGriff, a native of Philadelphia whose mother still lives in Germantown. Jimmy was on top of the charts for more than 30 years, beginning with his cover of “I’ve Got a Woman” in the early ’60s. Jimmy’s CDs are still in demand, as he was a crowd-pleaser at festivals and clubs around the world both with his own quartet and as co-leader with alto great Hank Crawford. Unfortunately Jimmy has been stricken with MS and no longer sits in front of his Hammond B-3. He now lives in a nursing home in Voorhees, N.J., and keeps in touch with his fans and musical buddies alike. MAXINE HARVARD Former manager, Jimmy McGriff

Wow. Phils score 4 in the 9th to beat the Astros 4-3 last night. The win improves their record to 7-7. Last year at this time it was 4-10. They still haven't been above .500 this season. From yesterday's Inky.... They didn't get over .500 until May 26 last season, and they needed five attempts to do it. They didn't get over .500 until May 5 in 2006, either. For whatever reasons, this team starts slowly. Every year. They haven't had a winning April since 2003. That's a lot of bad baseball in Aprils since.

AP updates Melo DUI story... http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3346621 The Denver Nuggets forward was arrested on Interstate 25, police said. He was alone in the car and pulled over for weaving and not dimming his lights. Detective Sharon Hahn said Anthony failed a series of sobriety tests. He was charged with DUI and then taken to police headquarters before being released to a "sober responsible party," Hahn said. Anthony is due in court May 14. That's some sloppy reporting

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080414/ap_on_...ets_anthony_dui Nuggets' Anthony nabbed on DUI suspicion By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer 57 minutes ago NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony was arrested early Monday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, hours after his worst game of the season. Police said the Denver Nuggets forward was arrested on Interstate 25. He was pulled over for weaving and failing to dim his lights. Detective Sharon Hahn said Anthony, who was alone in the car, failed a series of sobriety tests. He was ticketed and released at the scene, but Hahn did not know how he got home. Denver police don't jail DUI suspects and Anthony was no exception, Hahn said. WTF???? How irresponsible is it of the Denver Police to not take into custody someone they have ticketed for DUI??? Anthony is due in court May 14. Mark Warkentien, the Nuggets' vice president of basketball operations, said the team was aware of the situation but declined comment. Anthony apologized through his attorney, Dan Recht. "Carmelo apologizes to his fans, the Denver community, his teammates and the Nuggets organization for the distraction this is causing them," Recht said. He said Anthony consented to a blood test, but results won't be available for about two weeks. In the meantime, "Carmelo will try to stay focused on his family and his team," Recht said. The Nuggets are in the middle of a heated playoff race. They moved a-half game ahead of Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference on Sunday night when they beat Houston 111-94. But it was Anthony's worst outing of the season. He was held to 11 points on 3-of-14 shooting against a Rockets team that was missing defensive specialist Shane Battier. Anthony still managed to extend his NBA-best streak of double-digit games to 206. On Saturday, he committed a flagrant foul against Utah's Deron Williams that changed he course of a close game, and the Jazz ran away with a 124-97 win. The Nuggets did not practice on Monday and Anthony wasn't available. He's expected back on the court at practice on Tuesday. The Nuggets (49-32) can clinch their fifth straight postseason berth by beating Memphis at home on Wednesday night or if the Warriors lose at Phoenix on Monday night or against Seattle on Wednesday night. Despite his poor game Sunday, Anthony has had another stellar season. He was named an All-Star starter for the first time alongside teammate Allen Iverson, and he's fourth in the NBA in scoring (25.8) and is averaging a career-best 7.4 rebounds. Last season, he was involved in a brawl at Madison Square Garden. After J.R. Smith was collared on his way to a breakaway bucket in the closing minutes of a rout, Anthony, then the league's leading scorer, dropped the New York Knicks' Mardy Collins with a punch that cost him a 15-game suspension. In February, Anthony was ticketed in Arapahoe County for driving 25 mph over the posted speed limit. A hearing is set for next month in that speeding case. ___

Well the umps BLEW IT yesterday. Adrian Johnson(remember his name because I'm sure he'll blow some more calls) called a foul ball, which replays clearly showed was foul, a home run yesterday. Phils lose in extra innings 6-5. YO ADRIAN! GET SOME GLASSES! But DeRosa's phantom homer - replays showed the ball clearly went behind the foul pole in left field - had both clubhouses talking afterward. "He said the ball was inside the pole," Manuel said of his conversation with Johnson in the sixth. "He said it was fair. I asked him to get help. He did. I had a good shot at the ball. It was foul." Manuel argued so vehemently that Johnson ejected him. "It looked fair to me," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. But, Lou, replays showed the ball clearly was foul. "Really?" he said. "You mean the umpires were wrong?"
