  1. ESPN.com: Baseball Friday, October 12, 2007 Sources: Mitchell's report to reveal many names By Buster Olney ESPN The Magazine Sources familiar with the latest developments in the George Mitchell steroids investigation said Friday that the report will name many players, including some big names and some names that have not surfaced to date. In a conference call Friday with all 30 teams, Tom Carlucci of the San Francisco-based law firm Foley & Lardner advised them on the status of Mitchell's probe into the use of performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball. One source said, "This is going to be enormous ... it's going to be a huge story when these names come out." The former U.S. Senate Majority Leader's report is expected to be released between Oct. 31 and the end of the year. MLB vice president Rob Manfred said that Carlucci has no idea what information is in the report. "No one except Senator Mitchell's people know for sure whether there's going to be names named and how many names are involved and who those names are," Manfred said Friday. Albany County District Attorney David Soares, whose own investigation aimed to shut down a major supply line of illegal prescription drugs and "was never about cleaning up sports," has met with representatives from the Mitchell Commission. The New York Times reported last month that the names of 10 more baseball players turned up on a list of clients at the Florida pharmacy at the center of Soares' investigation into illegal steroid sales. Heather Orth, a spokeswoman for Soares, said Thursday she was not sure exactly what information had been turned over to Major League Baseball but said the DA's office has not given the league a list of players.
  2. Now that Marion Jones has confessed maybe Barry will man up and do the right thing too???? Nah.
  3. Colorado had them both tonight. I'm starting to think that the Rockies<Chris Berman voice> could... go... all.... the... way</voice>. Best team defense in the MLB, clutch hitting, speed, and good starting pitching.
  4. No, pretty close to the studio versions IIRC.
  5. I'm partial to this one.... http://www.bobbyzankel.com/newcdtrlist.htm
  6. I forgot to add that I have a cdr of this show too. It has two songs that didn't make the cut. The sound is atrocious on my copy so I will be looking forward to the upgrade even if it is missing two tunes.
  7. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 16, 2007 TWO-CD, HIGH FIDELITY LIVE SET ‘GRAM PARSONS ARCHIVES VOL. 1: THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS “LIVE” AT THE AVALON 1969’ OUT OCTOBER 30th ON AMOEBA RECORDS MATERIAL FROM 1969 FOUND IN GRATEFUL DEAD VAULTS; FEATURES TEN SONGS NEVER RECORDED BY PARSONS AND NEVER BEFORE AVAILABLE Amoeba Records will release a major addition to Gram Parsons' discography with ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’, due October 30th from the newly formed label. The two CD, 27-track set includes a number of never-before-heard -- though long rumored -- rarities. Gram Parsons, leading the Flying Burrito Brothers, opened for the Grateful Dead April 4, 5 and 6, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The April 4th show has never been heard in any form. The bonus disc is the April 6th show. For years these tapes were rumored to exist and were finally unearthed in the Grateful Dead vault. The shows were recorded by the legendary sound engineer Bear (Owsley Stanley), and are the highest quality Gram Parsons live material available. Amoeba Records, started by the owners of the revered independent record store of the same name, is launching with the August 28 release of smoky-voiced singer and songwriter Brandi Shearer’s ‘Close to Dark.’ The album is co-produced by Larry Klein, known for his work with Joni Mitchell and Madeleine Peyroux, among others. Rarities on ‘Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1: The Flying Burrito Brothers “Live” at the Avalon 1969’ include Gram’s unique choice of mainly country standards, which are not on any other official Gram Parsons recording: Undo The Right/Somebody’s Back In Town She Once Lived Here Mental Revenge We’ve Got To Get Ourselves Together Lucille You Win Again Long Black Limousine Sweet Dream Baby When Will I Be Loved Gram Parsons Archive Volume 1 Track Listing: 4/4 Disc 1 1. 10. From Monette Sudler's site... The first Change of the Century Concert was held at St. Mary's Church on the campus of University of Penn in Philadelphia. The nucleus of the band was Sunny Murray, Khan Jamal, Byard Lancaster, Monnette Sudler and Philly Joe Jones. Over the years the Change of the Century Orchestra has included other notables such as Odean Pope, Archie Shepp, Leon Thomas, Philly Joe Jones, Tyronne Brown, Reggie Workman, Grachen Monchor III, John Blake, Dave Burrell.... The Orchestra performed four concerts, the last was the Berlin Jazz Festival in Germany. The two concerts featured the music of Murray, Lancaster, Jamal, Sudler and Pope, however future concerts were dedicated to the late John Coltrane (by it's association with the Trane Stop Resource Institute) and Duke Ellington as well as music by Murray. Arranger and acting conductor for these concerts was Romulus Franceschini. The Orchestra did record a "live" broadcast for Whyy-Fm public radio but has never actually recorded for a record label. The second and fourth concerts were also documented on tape.

  17. Memo to Pat Gillick: This off season get some pitchers that can throw strikes or, at the very least, aim for the catcher. And make sure they take a MRI before accepting the trade/signing contract. Duh.

  20. I've been to a lot of indie rock shows the past few days. Saturday night I saw Animal Collective. Sunday was Thurston Moore. Tonight I'm seeing a triple bill - Boris/Damon and Naomi(with Michio Kurihara)/Fursaxa. Back to Jazz on Thursday when I see Bobby Zankel's Wonderful Warriors of Sound(featuring Elliott Levin and Seth Meicht). Saturday is Marilyn Crispell/Mark Helias/Andrew Cyrille. Phew.
  21. Well I was still in diapers when the '64 collapse happened, so for me - yes. The definitive answer, however, comes from two Philly sports writers who covered the '64 collapse. Bill Conlin and Stan Hochman. You can read their feelings on the subject here and here.
  22. I'M BURSTING WITH FRUIT FLAVOR!!!!

  25. As a long suffering Philadelphia sports fan - believe me - I know how you feel. The Phillies have a uncanny knack for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
