  3. I think too much is being made out of his "beat down" effecting his mental judgement. Yeah he was banged up but after 19 years as a pro he should be able to mentally adjust for that. Additionally, the beat down excuse seems to provide an "out" for Favre which I don't think he deserves. His mental lapse had little to do w/ his physical state at the time and everything to do w/ his ego. That last drive was a perfect summation his career. Though he was "injured" he toughed it out and made some amazing throws(that pass for the first down on 3 and 8 around the 50 yard line when he threaded the needle was incredible) and then made a dumb ass one the on that last play when there wasn't a defender w/in 10 yards of him when he let the ball go. He had a receiver right in front of him about 5 yards away but instead of going for the safe throw he committed the cardinal sin of throwing to his left while running right because he thought he saw a open receiver 15 yards down field. He gambled and this time he lost. But that's who he has always been. That's his MO. He gambles too much and when he's on it works and when he's not... well we all saw what happened.
  4. Poor Vikes. So close, yet so FARVE.

  8. looking for someone special http://houston.craigslist.org/muc/1532514852.html who would kill my drummer for $100.00. do not fear any negative consequences for this act. any self respecting law enforcement agency would gladly turn the other cheek once they hear this guy "play". I am tired of hearing his 70's style fills put in the wrong spot and ending one half beat early or late depending on how much he's had to drink. I am tired of him standing up behind his drums between songs and ripping his shirt off and flexing his muscles at wedding receptions where we were hired to play Air Supply, carpenters , and ann murray songs because "chicks dig the pecs, dude". I am tired of him showing up 20 minutes late for rehearsals then pouting until someone helps him load in his drums, then taking 30 minutes to set them up and needing a smoke break every 15 minutes, then wanting to leave early because"this chick is so fine, I can't say no, and she knows record people dude, so it's for the band" I am totally done with him calling me up at midnight to play me some damned jazz fusion album from 1981, crying and saying how we shouldn't have sold out to "the man"and asking if I know anyone who can get him some weed knowing full well I smoked twice in 69 and never touched it after that. I am sick of him farting on stage where the drum mics pick it up and thinking this shit is funny. I am tired of kicking off slow ballads at well under 80 bpm only to have them morph into the methamphetimine version of flight of the bumble bee, because that's the tempo he "feels" it at. I am tired of having to carry jumper cables to the gig because "I must have left the dome light on again, dude"instead of admitting his 84 oldsmobile is a worn out piece of crap. I am tired of him asking when he's gonna get a drum solo. I am tired of paying his tab at restaurants because "that chick must have stole my wallet man, but it was worth it 'cause she was a phreak". I will not move my amp again so he can put another new cymbal on the stage, because "when we learn some fusion i'll need this sound".........please somebody kill this motherfucker. i can't do it because he's my brother and mom would be so pissed off even though she thinks the band would probably sound better too. besides, if you are good at killing drummers, you could probably make a lot of money in this town.
  9. Gotta be warmer than Michigan
  10. Colts will crush them. And "Sad" Diego just plain sucks. Norv Turner proves once again that he can't win the big one....a 57 yard FG attempt?!? WTF? Colts may win but they won't be crushed and I tell ya if the Colts play like they did yesterday, the Jets will win, no doubt about it. The Ravens game was very winnable but the Ravens just make mistake after mistake. I like the Jets chances though the smart money favors the Colts. Did anyone see that call in the 2nd quarter(?) when the zebras in the booth overturned the call on the field of a SD receiver's catch and fumble making it an incomplete pass? That was just horrible. I was starting to think the fix was in for the Jets. What was Brookings crying about?? It's freaking football - deal with it. If he can't maybe he should switch to something like badminton.
  11. Gong - Camembert Electrique (Caroline/Virgin)
  12. Revolutionary Ensemble - Manhattan Cycles (India Navigation)
  13. Bog-Shed - Brutal (Shelfish Records) Overlooked punk rock classic from 1987 that sounds like it was recorded in '77.
  14. Interesting take on all of the McGwire hoopla..... Mark McGwire’s Pound of Flesh posted by Dave Zirin on 01/12/2010 @ 08:54am In the ten years Brian Williams has anchored the NBC Nightly News, he has never once launched a broadcast by lambasting a public figure. Henry Paulson after the economic collapse? George W. Bush after Katrina? Dick Cheney after everything? All were spared the personal disdain of "America's most trusted newsman." Until yesterday. Williams began his broadcast by going after true evil: Mark McGwire. As Williams said, Good evening. Because this is a family broadcast, we probably can't say what we'd like to about the news today that Mark McGwire--the home run hitter, the family favorite from the St. Louis Cardinals--stopped lying today and admitted that he did it while on steroids…..He's been unable to get into the Hall of Fame and, apparently--even for him--the shame here was too much. Yes, cue the vultures, for retired slugger Mark McGwire has finally admitted the obvious and told the world he used steroids and other performance enhancers throughout his playing career. He clears his conscience a half-decade after a disastrous appearance in front of Congress, simulcast on C-SPAN and ESPN, where he auto-repeated "I'm not here to talk about the past" to his inquisitors. Monday's admission today, in advance of starting work as the new hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, is a shocker right up there with "Sarah Palin finds work at Fox News." His teary audio confession also further cements McGwire's reputation as the Hamlet of the Steroid Era: tortured, indecisive, self-pitying, and in constant mourning about his own frailties. For anyone who hoped that McGwire's confession could spark an opportunity to have an honest discussion about how we understand that juiced period in baseball history, from roughly 1992-2006, these hopes were quickly liquidated. Now is the time of the Sunday morning hangover and everyone is a born again zealot, personified by the harrumphing visage of Brian Williams. The media, so happy to cheerlead the home run barrage during the 1990s, now want an apology parade of humbled players swimming in tears and begging for mercy. Read the rest here..... http://www.thenation.com/blogs/notion/515740/mark_mcgwire_s_pound_of_flesh
  15. Long overdue. Still doesn't get into the Hall but, he's got some respect back now that he has owned up to it. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4816607 "Now that I have become the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, I have the chance to do something that I wish I was able to do five years ago. I never knew when, but I always knew this day would come. It's time for me to talk about the past and to confirm what people have suspected. I used steroids during my playing career and I apologize. I remember trying steroids very briefly in the 1989/1990 off season and then after I was injured in 1993, I used steroids again. I used them on occasion throughout the '90s, including during the 1998 season. I wish I had never touched steroids. It was foolish and it was a mistake. I truly apologize. Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era. During the mid-'90s, I went on the DL seven times and missed 228 games over five years. I experienced a lot of injuries, including a ribcage strain, a torn left heel muscle, a stress fracture of the left heel, and a torn right heel muscle. It was definitely a miserable bunch of years and I told myself that steroids could help me recover faster. I thought they would help me heal and prevent injuries, too. I'm sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids. I had good years when I didn't take any and I had bad years when I didn't take any. I had good years when I took steroids and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn't have done it and for that I'm truly sorry. Baseball is really different now -- it's been cleaned up. The commissioner and the players' association implemented testing and they cracked down, and I'm glad they did. I'm grateful to the Cardinals for bringing me back to baseball. I want to say thank you to Cardinals owner Mr. DeWitt, to my GM, John Mozeliak, and to my manager, Tony La Russa. I can't wait to put the uniform on again and to be back on the field in front of the great fans in Saint Louis. I've always appreciated their support and I intend to earn it again, this time as hitting coach. I'm going to pour myself into this job and do everything I can to help the Cardinals hitters become the best players for years to come. After all this time, I want to come clean. I was not in a position to do that five years ago in my congressional testimony, but now I feel an obligation to discuss this and to answer questions about it. I'll do that, and then I just want to help my team."

  19. Here's a clip from the Sun Ra Arkestra show I saw back in July....
  20. Not that particular one, but Japanese Vertigo LPs are very hard to find! Was this just recently re-issued on vinyl? I've seen sealed copies of it in two different shops this past week.
  21. Eagles. Season. Over. No way they come back and win next week. Oh and hey NFL - how about having a rule, a la Major League Baseball, where the WC winner cannot play their division winner in the first round? How weird is it that both NFC wild card games* will be a rematch of week 17's games?? *And if the Jets hold on to their 27-0 half time lead over the Bengals their AFC WC game w/ be a week 17 rematch too.
  22. 2009 Shows 01/16 - HAN BENNINK & MARSHALL ALLEN Great duo performance at a art gallery. May come out on video. 01/29 - LOTTE ANKER / SYLVIE COURVOISIER / IKUE MORI I really like Lotte Anker's sax playing. Unfortunately the performance was marred by Ikue Mori's electronics which were too LOUD and uninspired. I liked Mori's contributions when I saw her perform w/ Masada. 01/31 - THURSTON MOORE + MATS GUSTAFSSON Very good. Thurston provided guitar atmospherics while Mats wailed. 02/13 - PATTI SMITH This was part lecture/part musical performance in honor of the Robert Mapplethorpe's infamous photography exhibit that was banned in Cincinnati back in 1989. Patti is a great storyteller - very funny. 03/13 - MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO (Shipp, Joe Morris, Whit Dickey) 03/16 - FLOWER TRAVELIN’ BAND Original lineup that can still bring it. Unfortunately they did none of the tunes off the Satori album. 03/22 - DAVID DANIELL JACK ROSE GLENN JONES ANDY GILES 4 solo guitar sets; 2 electric, 2 acoustic. Rose's set was the last time I saw him perform live. The performance will be released in March as a bonus DVD for the "Things We Used To Do" DVD release 04/03 - BOB MOULD Leader of 80's punk band Husker Du plays solo acoustic. 04/10 - ROBYN HITCHCOCK (with Peter Buck) Robyn is the musical heir to Syd Barrett. One of the wittiest performers I've ever seen. 04/10 - BARDO POND Caught this later the same night. Loud psychedelic jams. 04/17 - AB BAARS Trio & KEN VANDERMARK with Ab Baars, tenor sax/clarinet/shakuhachi Ken Vandermark, tenor sax/clarinet, Wilbert de Joode, double-bass, Martin van Duynhoven, drums - My first time seeing Vandermark perform live. Very good but I wanted him to cut loose just a little bit more. 04/26 - TONY CONRAD & KEIJI HAINO Ugh. Very disappointing. Just could not get into Conrad at all. Haino I would like to see perform again. 05/04 - REPTET I love this band. 05/06 - PETER BROTZMANN & NASHEET WAITS another great duo performance. 05/09 - MIKE WATT AND THE MISSINGMEN (RAUL MORALES & TOM WATSON) Mike Watt playing a whole show of punk cover tunes. Awesome. 05/24 - SUN RA ARKESTRA Marshall’s Allen’s 85th BDay celebration. Not that good. Horns were off. The whole band sounded like they needed another week of rehearsals. Maybe they did a little too much celebrating before hitting the stage? 06/12 - MEAT PUPPETS Free lunchtime concert. Short show at 50 minutes. Yet another 80's rock band that is still kicks the asses of the young pups 1/2 their age. 06/12 - ODEAN POPE & SUNNY MURRAY Awful. I should have demanded a refund. Odean was great. 06/16 - ORGANISSIMO Please move to Philly already and be the house band at Ron's dream bar. 06/17 - DIRTY PROJECTORS / VIEUX FARKA TOURE / SKELETONS Great lineup. Vieux Farka Toure is Ali Farka Toure's son and is blessed w/ his father's musical ability. Dirty Projectors are one of my favorite indie rock bands - great songs and arrangements, especially the vocals. 06/19 - IRON Local Philly dance hall reggae outfit. Very good. 07/01 - SUN RA ARKESTRA Probably the best performance by the band that I've caught since Ra left for Jupiter. Amazing since they were so awful just 6 weeks earlier. 07/02 - SONIC YOUTH / THE ENTRANCE BAND Sonic Youth is still shredding eardrums wherever they go. 07/20 - TORTOISE This was my third time seeing them. I'm getting a little less enthusiastic about them. Great ensemble that needs better material, imho. 08/29 - FLAMING LIPS / EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY EITS were great and the Lips were amazing before the rain washed out their set about 30 minutes into it. 09/20 - SUNN O))) & EAGLE TWIN Sunn O))) is the scariest band in the world. They are also the LOUDEST. Doom metal 09/24 - GUNTER HAMPEL & THE EUROPEAN TRIO / KHAN JAMAL This was a great show. Unfortunately only 12 people paid to get in. 09/29 - FAUST Kraut rock. They did a two day teach-in residency. This was the performance at the end of the 2nd day. Great. 10/31 - SUN RA ARKESTRA Very good but not quite up to the heights they scaled back in July. 10/31 - DEAD MILKMEN Later the same night. 80's punkers still bringing it. 11/13 - JOHN BUTCHER / HANS KOCH + JACK WRIGHT The performance took place in an historic 17th century mansion. I need to hear more Jack Wright. Butcher was great. 11/18 - THE JESUS LIZARD One of those aforementioned 80's bands that kicks young pup's asses. 11/20 - HAMIET BLUIETT + KAHIL EL'ZABAR Another great duo show. However, it was marred by their unannounced guest - a racist veggie preacher. 11/28 - MEAT PUPPETS Full show w/ a new drummer. 12/03 - BOBBY ZANKEL’S WONDERFUL WARRIORS OF SOUND Local avant big band. 12/03 - ESPERS record release show by Philly folk rockers. They were great but I'll probably remember this show as the last time I saw Jack Rose alive. He died less than 36 hours later from a heart attack. 12/05 - BILL DIXON & with Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra Exploding Star Orchestra were great. Apparently Dixon had some problems hearing himself in the mix and pretty much laid out the whole night as a result. Alas. 12/13 – MARSHALL ALLEN, ELLIOTT LEVIN, WARREN OREE, EDGAR BATEMAN, RAY KING A one off by a bunch of local guys. Great. I didn't realize it until I started commenting on the shows but this past year was a great one for duo performances. I saw some standout shows - really there were only two or three clunkers out of the 38 performances I caught. However, I was particularly disappointed in the shows that I had tickets for but were canceled at the last minute - Merzbow (due to fears of H1N1), Bert Jansch(health), and Butthole Surfers(lack of ticket sales) hopefully I'll get to see them all this year. So what shows did y'all catch in 2009?
  23. I stumbled upon John Rudoff's photos that he took of the Philadelphia and Newport Folk Festivals circa 64-65. The colors(and the subjects) are just amazing. Dylan fans take note - probably the only known color photos of his '65 Newport appearance. http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnrudoff/sets/72157611490418013/
