  1. I picked up a sealed copy of that Art Lund for $4 (including shipping!) via eBay, so I think I have just about everything (or close enough) to eventually put together an enhanced Goodman Columbia/Okeh set. A fair number of good Eddie Sauter arrangements scattered among these Goodman-vocalist collections. Thanks for the tip re the Lund.
  2. I read another account in which Monk referred to it as Dolphy's "knowledge bump" and warned him not to have it removed.
  3. Hey all, I'm working on a Night Lights show about Esquire Magazine's connection to the jazz scene in the 1940s and 50s. I've got the following CDs on hand, but anything else I should seek out? Esquire's All-American Hot Jazz Sessions The First Esquire Jazz Concert (two versions, the Laserlight and the 2-CD Christly Records edition, which includes more material) The Second Esquire Jazz Concert Woody Herman/Duke Ellington concert with Orson Welles as MC (from Woody Herman V-Disc Years 1944-46) Leonard Feather-produced session for Continental Records (on The Continental Sessions V. 3) Coleman Hawkins and Leonard Feather's Esquire All Stars Commodore session Much appreciation in advance for any additional suggestions that you can offer.
  4. A live late-period R.E.M. CD that I still love:
  5. New book by Erik Davis, whose 33 1/3 on Led Zeppelin IV I greatly enjoyed:
  6. ... and a hot lunch for Lou Donaldson!
  7. I realize most here are not fans of Miles' Warner Bros era (and it's certainly not my favorite, though it's grown on me considerably in recent years), but for anybody wanting to dip their toes into it, here's a Night Lights show: Final Miles: Miles Davis On Warner Brothers
  8. I already have several tracks from the original sessions that were included in a Miles Warner Bros era collection—and a little wary of how it’s been “finished,” but I’ll probably pick it up regardless: Miles Davis’ Rubberband set for release
  9. A largely-forgotten masterpiece of early-80s indie jangle pop:
  10. We re-aired Q Is For Jazz: Quincy Jones last week, and it remains archived for online listening.
  11. Me as well! I think that was the first Fats Navarro CD I ever purchased, actually.
  12. I'm also considering filling out the recent Teddy Wilson set with the tracks that they didn't include from the Chu Berry and Lester Young sets, as well as the sessions with Billie Holiday.
  13. A pretty remarkable testament to this forum that it's still around and active. Back in 2003-04 no Facebook, no Twitter, very little cellphone-driven Internet activity... bulletin boards and even blogs now to some extent considered passe. This place is definitely my online home.
  14. I also just remembered that "121 Bank Street" is the title of a David Baker composition on the Russell album At The Five Spot.
  15. 121 Bank Street? I just walked down that block a few months ago. Google Maps photo: https://www.google.com/maps/place/121+Bank+St,+New+York,+NY+10014/@40.7362989,-74.0075345,3a,75y,339.19h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sfauO_egBInrIB1-Sncjy6Q!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo3.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DfauO_egBInrIB1-Sncjy6Q%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dsearch.TACTILE.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D86%26h%3D86%26yaw%3D339.1879%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c259eadf259fa7:0x91c5e8f4cf8e134c!8m2!3d40.7364869!4d-74.007662
  16. Very sorry to hear this--much respect for Big Papi. Best wishes for a full recovery.
  17. Second the recommendation for that Helen Forrest set. It also includes some fine Eddie Sauter arrangements for the Goodman band, iirc, that were omitted from the Mosaic set. (That may be the case wjth the Peggy Lee/Goodman collection as well.)
  18. For anybody who’s interested in the history and production of the original series, I highly recommend this book: ... I’ve only read about a third of it so far, but it’s revelatory. I have Cushman’s book about season 2 as well but haven’t cracked it yet—and I’ll definitely be buying his season 3 volume at some point.
  19. Merton read and commented on some of his work, correct?
  20. Yankees' rotation is hanging by a thread and the bullpen was absolutely terrible on this road trip--they did their best to give away another game today. But frankly I think the American League season is shaping up as a contest to see who gets pummeled by the Astros in the playoffs. (Not discounting the Twins or the Rays either, who are playing as well or better than NY and Boston.)
  21. I bought that years ago but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
  22. A gorgeous album that Mark Stryker’s forthcoming Detroit-jazz book hipped me to:
