  1. Late-period Fitzgerald, including the Pat Hobby stories, which I’m always happy to re-read:
  2. Aaron Judge promises to hit home run for elderly fan in wheelchair (whom he'd gone over to greet because said fan, a retired Los Angeles school teacher, is the father of a Yankee bullpen coach), then delivers.
  3. This is one of several reasons why I've steadily lost interest in following football as an adult. Obviously it's a game that involves a high degree of sophisticated skill-sets, strategies, and on-the-field, in-the-moment intelligence. Still, there's no getting around that much of it requires trying to pummel the stuffing out of fellow human beings.
  4. Miles isn't dead--he just plays funny! Kidding aside, I assume you mean the forthcoming Rubberband release. I've heard the material that was included on a box-set of Miles' Warner Bros recordings, but have to admit that I'm slightly dubious about the "finished" album that's coming out. I'll definitely give it a listen, though.
  5. Picking this up on Friday at Landlocked when it comes out. Mark Stryker's Detroit book inspired me to seek out several more relatively recent Carter recordings such as Present Tense and Heaven On Earth; nice to see him coming back into the spotlight a bit with this new Blue Note release.
  6. She took a taxi? Great thread, btw--thanks for starting it.
  7. Impressive deep-cut Mingus pick—Ella’s “How High The Moon” and an Esperanza Spalding track on there as well: The Obamas’ summer 2019 playlist
  8. Will this be available through Amazon in the U.S., or just Dusty Groove? Recommendations on the best online source for purchasing it? Right now I’m leaning towards Dusty Groove, but waiting to see if it pops up on Amazon in the next few weeks. Surprised not to see it there yet, given its 9/27 release date. Totally in your camp, Simon! Thanks for all of your work regarding Mr. Hayes. I’m definitely in on the CD box set.
  9. Jonesin’ for some CBBB:
  10. Finally got around to picking up the second of Retrieval’s two releases devoted to the Georgians. Well worth it! I need to revisit Sudhalter’s Lost Chords for the pages he devotes to this band.
  11. I'm interested as well, and I might be able to spark the IU Music Library's interest, since they are missing print copies from about 1972 to 2004 (they microfilmed all issues of DB during that stretch and did not keep the physical copies--then resumed keeping and binding the physical copies).
  12. Monk sounds good at twilight:
  13. I second Larry and Steve's recommendations for the Hep titles--I have all eight of them. I would love to see Mosaic do a box-set, but I doubt that Thornhill is enough of a marquee name, even among the Mosaic base, for them to risk it.
  14. H/t to Jim Sangrey for inspiring me to pull this one out of the “to-be-listened-to” box.
  15. So glad you dug it, RT! I’m admittedly a bit of an evangelist when it comes to Thornhill and his 1940s big bands.
  16. Claude Thornhill: Godfather Of Cool made another trip around the radio circuit last week and is again up for online listening.
