  1. The Mets’ Pete Alonso has two games to break Aaron Judge’s rookie HR record—currently tied with it at 52. Yankees pulled ahead of the Twins last night in the race for the new team record, leading 305 to 303 with two games left for both. Houston IMO is definitely the team to beat, both for the AL and the WS. Yankees will have their hands full with the Twins, who will be eager to turn over the “can’t-beat-NY” narrative that’s built up around them over the past few years. And as strong as Houston is, I still think either the Rays or A’s could give them a really thorny time of it in the ALDS.
  2. Anybody else here a fan of this pianist? I met him a few years ago when he came back to Bloomington with Dave Douglas' group. I'm most familiar with his playing on Douglas' records; any recommendations for dates under his own name or notable sideman recordings elsewhere?
  3. Just got this in the mail today--really looking forward to reading: Move On Up: Chicago Soul Music And Black Cultural Power (Full disclosure: Aaron is a friend. He's also a DownBeat contributor and author of the 33 1/3 book about Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace, as well as the annotator of Mosaic's Bee Hive set. You can hear him talking about the set on this Night Lights show: Boppin' On Bee Hive)
  4. I use these occasionally when I'm doing research for Night Lights shows, and you're right, there are a bunch of them out there. I'm fortunate to work at IU, which gives me access to a lot of online electronic copies of such works. Rutgers University's jazz-studies program has produced quite a few, as you can well imagine. Some of these eventually evolve into commercially published books.
  5. I don't either--for a long time all I had were the two albums you're most likely to find in a non-Deadhead collection, Workingmans Dead and American Beauty, plus Anthem of the Sun. A couple of years ago the Dead bug finally bit me and I picked up the Rhino Golden Road box-set that covers 1965-1973. That's been enough to sate me--and yeah, a bit wary of getting too hooked, given said scale of their discography!
  6. It's the Grateful Dead. The booklet indicates that the track was first released on the So Many Roads 1965-1995 Dead box set.
  7. Another fun one from the expanded Nuggets box-set:
  8. Listening to disc 1 of the newly-arrived San Francisco Nuggets box-set:
  9. Quite a few one-hit wonders on Rhino's expanded 4-CD box-set version of the Nuggets compilation.
  10. Just heard "Don't Look Back" a few days ago as I began to revisit the Nuggets box-set. Great track!
  11. Right--I'm definitely signing up for that, thanks much. Much appreciation for the update--I'll recalibrate my budget for November, in that case. Really looking forward to this set.
  12. Any sign of this set's availability yet beyond the UDiscover link? Still not seeing it up for pre-order at Dusty Groove or on Amazon USA/UK.
  13. In honor of the 93rd anniversary of Trane's birth today, here are several Night Lights shows that I've devoted to him over the years: Trane '57: John Coltrane's Pivotal Year In Jazz Trane '62: The Classic Coltrane Quartet Begins Trane '63: A Classic, A Challenge, A Change Red Trane: The Collaborations Of John Coltrane And Red Garland The John Coltrane Songbook
  14. Severino's line today for his second start of the year: 5 IP, 3 H, 9 Ks, 0 BB, 0 R/ER. His return could be a gamechanger for the Yankees going into the playoffs.
  15. I watched The Six Million Dollar Man religiously when I was a kid (iirc it was on Sunday nights). Didn't learn till many years later that Oliver Nelson wrote the theme music that I loved so much! My parents were big fans of The Bob Newhart Show, which was part of CBS' strong Saturday-evening lineup. Great TV memories of that era. Lately I've taken to watching The Rockford Files, which was a favorite of my dad's. Another favorite of my parents--Henry Mancini wrote this music, correct?
