  1. I'll preface this by saying that obviously e-mail is a wonderful thing--it's enabled me to enjoy contact with a lot of people, both former friends and online acquaintances, that I otherwise would not have sustained or initiated. It's an amazing professional tool as well. But some days now I open up the several accounts I have--personal and professional--and feel a bit overwhelmed by all of the listserv messages, communiques, and other items that add up to a virtual bombardment of online correspondence, news, and solicitation. Obviously I can cut back by dropping off some of the listservs, but some are very helpful and interesting, even if the ratio of useful-to-not-so-useful messages is not so great. Just wondering if anybody else here ever experiences e-mail fatigue. I also don't really write letters anymore (something that I did quite a lot of in my teens and twenties) and wonder if that's going to become something of a lost art (or already has).
  2. Red Trane will re-air this weekend on Night Lights, including new station KOSU (Oklahoma Public Radio); it is already archived for online listening.
  3. I'm coming up with fellow WFIU jazz DJ Joe Bourne--would love to hook up with any other O board members who are there. Much of the original George Russell/David Baker Sextet will be there (Baker, David Young, Al Kiger, Joe Hunt). Should be a fantastic day!
  4. I recently got a used copy of the first edition. Teachout writes: Anybody around these parts who might be able to comment on whether or not it's worth trading up for the second ed.?
  5. If anybody has Martial Solal's RCA NEWPORT '63, either on CD or vinyl, could you send me a PM? I'm just looking for a single track--"Boplicity"--to use in an upcoming Night Lights show.
  6. Memo to Mr. Bill Barton Re: life, jazzing up the airwaves Keep on keepin' on!!! Here's to many more bright moments.
  7. Jazzwax's Marc Myers has a tribute up on his blog.
  8. Hey Bertrand, per my reply elsewhere, James Spaulding is supposed to be at sheldonm's big photo shindig for Indiana jazz musicians this Sunday--I will try to ask him about it, as I've had the same question before myself.
  9. Two more: KCCK-Cedar Rapids, IA (Mondays at 5 a.m. CDT--they're also looking to air it a second time each week in a better timeslot) DZFE-Manila, Phillippines )(Thursdays at 9 p.m. PHT) Both beginning next week. Full carriage on the Night Lights station map.
  10. Thanks much for that. Worlds Records e-mailed to tell me that DETS V. 13 is out of stock and that they will ship it ASAP.
  11. JP, many thanks (belatedly) for that--didn't realize you jocked at WDCB. I'm thinking that either this got posted on the board at some point--or perhaps Sangrey or somebody else mentioned it in passing--but just for the heck of it:
  12. David was in a car accident in 1953 and spent years, unbeknowst to him, playing on what essentially was a dislocated jaw. Eventually, the lingering effects of all of this made it impossible for him to play and he had to give up the trombone for good in 1962. He had always taught, even back in the '50s in Indianapolis, so that was a logical career move, as was composing. He cast about for another instrument, first trying piano, and then settling on cello, which has been his primary instrument since that time. I am not aware that he has ever picked up the trombone again in recent years. Maybe, but I talk to him every few years or so and he's never said anything about it. I'm still connected to lots of people in Bloomington (my hometown) and nobody has ever mentioned that. Ghost: Did you ever ask him directly? In his day, he could play the shit out of the trombone technically. There was a brief period when he tried playing it again, but it was quite a few years ago--I'll ask him as well when I see him next weekend. I think this came up during our interview, but I honesty can't remember--might've been the mid-1970s.
  13. Worlds Records just got DETS V. 13 in a day or so ago--I placed an order this morning. They're also running a 25%-off sale on discontinued Jazz Unlimited and Nostalgia Arts titles.
  14. More sad news from the JPL:
  15. We'll be re-airing this program this Memorial Day weekend; it's already archived for online listening.
  16. Thanks for the tip, Randy--just ordered a copy myself.
  17. Excellent news--been waiting a long time for the next volume and will try to order as soon as a U.S. distributor gets the actual CD set. I've been on a bit of a Duke kick again anyway.
  18. Yeah, we got this in yesterday and I heard it for the first time last night--good outing from JC. I only know "Rapid Shave" from a Shirley Scott album (QUEEN OF THE ORGAN); I used her version in a Night Lights show a couple years back.
  19. Yes, I also came across that recent Jazz Library program and wanted to link to the audio, but it appears you can't get the podcast if you're outside of the UK.
  20. All I've found so far is what's in that Equinox listing--I'll try to check around and see if I can dig anything else up.
  21. I'm working on a Dolphy Night Lights show and have posted this news on the program site, along with a short video clip of Dolphy playing with Don Ellis and Benny Golson at a NY Philharmonic concert for kids circa February 1964.
  22. Best to you, Chuck...and thanks in advance for all of the hard work you've been putting in on the upcoming reissues.
  23. Larry, this is a very superficial/cosmetic suggestion that doesn't address deeper, underlying issues that have been brought up in this thread (and that I'd feel more comfortable PMing you about), but do you have an iPod? If so, you might want to try dumping a variety of music into it--jazz (classic/modern Chicago, etc.), classical, Monday Michiru, new music that you haven't heard before, what have you--into it and setting the thing on shuffle.
  24. A couple years back, somebody gave me a rather beat-up but quite-playable used copy of the 4-CD Reprise box-set. I've never delved much into this era of FS (just have the album with Ellington & SINATRA & STRINGS, which I nabbed during a BMG fire-sale), but I can definitely recommend the Reprise collection for anybody wanting an overview of FS' 1960s/70s work. Some good singles and unreleased sides included as well.
