Everything posted by ghost of miles

  1. We're re-airing Vibin': Roy Ayers in the 1960s this weekend, but it is already archived for online listening. (See the links page for live broadcast times around the country.)
  2. Nice version of it with Ronnie Mathews on RETURN OF THE GRIFFIN...just played it on the radio last week.
  3. Those Monk sides were my introduction to him, about 12 years ago--agree completely with you. JG had to be a badass to hold down a gig with Monk.
  4. I'll try to tune in. I remember Larry Kart once posting something here to the effect that you could tell Dick genuinely liked what he played, and that that made a difference in how the music came across. Soul-less jazz radio, in particular, does not sound good.
  5. Jane Greer, love her--I think there's a kinship between her and my wife (seriously). She teamed up with Mitchum in a "screwball noir" that I'm very fond of, The Big Steal.
  6. I'm going to reread Larry's piece on JG when I get home tonight and put on a few records--glad that others here had a chance to hear him in person, it must've been a thrill. Many thanks for all of the music, Mr. Griffin.
  7. Where was this published? It was posted to the Jazz Programmers Listserv and another jazz e-mail group that I'm on...seems to be true.
  8. This is the same label that reissued Fred Katz's FOLK SONGS FOR FAR OUT FOLK last year.
  9. We're rebroadcasting One More You Wrote Through Us: Horace Tapscott this weekend, but it's already archived for online listening. The Leimert Park documentary mentioned in the post is now available on DVD.
  10. News via Terry Teachout's blog tribute: Jo Stafford RIP
  11. I thought the first episode of the new season--"Plan of Attack"--was great, one of the best recent shows. (Season "4"--actually UK 4 and 5 combined--was a little uneven IMO.) Anyone interested in a contemporary look at the morality of the Allied bombing campaign should check out A.C. Grayling's book AMONG THE DEAD CITIES.
  12. Thought some here might find it of interest: When Algren Met Holiday
  13. My contribution, from the American heartland: Jazz Impressions of Paris
  14. Jazz Impressions of Paris is now archived, just in time for Bastille Day.
  15. New Yorker write-up
  16. The U.S. broadcasts of Foyle's War cut out about 10-12 minutes to fit into PBS timeslots, so it's interesting (if you're a fan) to watch the DVDs when they come out; the episodes get even better. Last night my wife and I watched the last episode of the previous season ("Casualties of War") and felt that some of the little touches that had been deleted from the U.S. TV version--Milner's conversation with one of the murdered teacher's home-school pupils, for example--really helped round out the show and gave some of the minor characters a bit more nuance. I'm guessing that other British mysteries shown on PBS get the same edit/chop jobs as well.
  17. Sponsors of The Jazz Opera Radio Hour?
  18. Yes, Laurence Fox really stands out, I think. My wife pointed out that he played the young, wealthy British Nazi sympathizer in the Foyle's War episode "War Games" (season 2).
  19. Ken Dryden's AMG review.
  20. Season 6 (billed over here as Season 5) of Foyle's War starts this week on PBS. Three episodes, was supposed to be the last, but the show's creator says he's now at work on another season that will take place in the months immediately following the end of the war. It appears, sadly, that Jericho was not renewed, although I liked the new "Inspector Lewis" series that aired over the past several weeks.
  21. Wow--I picked a hell of a thread to revive when I went on my Benson kick, didn't I? Just got ALL BLUES in the mail yesterday and listened to it on my desk computer at work...any other suggestions for good Benson jazz sides? So far I've got UPTOWN, COOKBOOK, Jimmy Smith's THE BOSS, and ALL BLUES. (Also borrowed a Verve "Silver Collection" compilation from our station's library that looks promising, but haven't had a chance to listen yet.) Placing a Mosaic order soon whenever the Helen Merrills come out and will toss in BEYOND THE BLUE HORIZON as well.
  22. Mr. Perchard is an Organissimo poster. He certainly knew what he was talking about! I shall look out for his posts ... but under what name? umum_cypher. Looks like he hasn't been on the board for the past couple of weeks, but he does drop in from time to time. Hey Bill, re: Tubby Hayes, did you see the video his big band circa mid-1960s doing "Parisian Thoroughfare" that I posted on the Night Lights Jazz Impressions of Paris program page?
  23. Look, man, you've just got to put the kibosh on this latest "sell-out" notion that you ran by me recently--that commercial project of show tunes called JEWS ON BROADWAY... with special guest guitarist George Benson... please don't do it, Allen...
  24. Got this the other day and while the music is up to par with previous DETS releases, the liner notes are--to put it politely--disappointing. Still, glad to finally have #13 out.
  25. Definitely hard to beat at that price--I got it from Newbury several weeks ago but haven't had a chance to listen yet. It was so cheap that I ordered another one as a gift for our jazz director, who's a big Ella fan.
