Fletcher Henderson Birthday Tribute Tonight (12-18-08)
ghost of miles replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Those with a deep, abiding interest in FH should check out Jeffrey Magee's THE UNCROWNED KING OF SWING. There's also the revered Walter Allen bio-discography, though I've never been fortunate enough to come across a copy (for purchase, anyway). Of course, those with a deep, abiding interest probably already have--but just in case you haven't... -
Since it's been broached...Herman Capitol booklet
ghost of miles replied to corbin's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'd check with Mosaic first--iirc the Herman Capitol went OOP just a couple of years ago, so there's a decent chance that Mosaic still has some booklets lying around. -
If anybody has a copy of the out-of-print BASIE-ECKSTINE INC., could they PM me? Many thanks in advance!

Yanow's JAZZ ON FILM seems to allude to it, but goes on to say what I've read/heard elsewhere: that most of the early Tonight Show performances are lost: Jazz on Film

Ironically enough, I just went over to David Baker's office to drop off some things, and in the midst of talking about how Freddie Hubbard was doing, David mentioned how athletic FH had been when younger. "I was going down Broadway with him after he finished that INTERPLAY date with Bill Evans and Philly Joe, and he handed me everything in his pockets and started walking down the street on his hands!" David said. I told him there was an active thread about that album here and that I'd have to pass along the anecdote.

happy Birthday JSngry

Happy belated birthday to a fellow O poster, fellow December boy, and fellow spouse-of-a-great-woman-named-Brenda! -
Glad you like it, Bentsy...I'm having a lot of fun with the "featured" section.

Many thanks, all. It's been a rather up and down year, and I've missed this place the past few months, not hanging quite as regularly as I used to... hope to amend that in 2009. Best b-day present so far: George E. Lewis, A POWER STRONGER THAN ITSELF. :excited: That and getting to spend some extra time with my wife today, on what's normally a work-day for both of us. Hoping to read a "lost" Hammett story that medjuck hipped me to before turning in.

Yeah, I just got this e-mail as well--what a bloodbath! Glad that I already have nearly everything that I would want on that list.

I'll be checking this one out as well. Is there anything on tape of Bradford's stay w/Ornette in the early 1960s?

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
ghost of miles replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I envy you, sir! Mine's on the way, supposedly, along with the Goodman and the Braxton...Mosaic was out of stock on the Braxton when I first tried to order at the beginning of last week. -
We're running that broadcast here at WFIU as well. But it doesn't involve the cancelation of Night Lights, does it? (Everything in its proper place!) No way, man! Anyways, my show occupies some low-value radio real estate here on the home station...11 p.m. EST Saturday evenings. There isn't much that's going to pre-empt that!

"The Best Tenor You Never Heard: JR Monterose"
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Hey, c'mon, that's a great cover! We're re-airing "The Best Tenor You Never Heard" this week on Night Lights (check out our handy-dandy new station map for airtimes around the country; just click on the balloons for broadcast dates and website links), but it is already archived for online listening. -
Jazz Studies Online
ghost of miles replied to blajay's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Thanks much--I'll be adding this to the Night Lights links page. -
I mentioned our thread discussion here to Jason Nickey, who runs Landlocked, and he laughed and said, "Well, just tell him that I've sold 5 copies of NONAAH so far!" And it is true (sadly) that Jason's store is probably the only one in south-central Indiana stocking NONAAH, as well as other cool jazz titles like the ESP reissues (the Don Cherry release is visible on the front riser in the top picture).

John Handy Columbia Mosaic Select announced
ghost of miles replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Handy recorded three albums for Roulette - Quote , Unquote is a reissue . Which might make a Select problematic, unless there's a batch of previously-unissued material they could include...otherwise you're putting 3 LPs on 3 CDs. I mean, it could be done, but most of the Selects seem to incorporate at least 4-5 LPs. -
John Handy Columbia Mosaic Select announced
ghost of miles replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Handy mentioned this set as a possibility to me when I interviewed him last year around the time of his 75th birthday--though I was under the impression that there would be more unreleased material included. You can hear several of the Roulette cuts in the Night Lights show Handy With the Horn, and here are the transcribed interviews that I did with him: John Handy Part 1 John Handy Part 2 John Handy Part 3 John Handy Part 4 Handy talks about the Roulette recordings at the end of Part 2 and the beginning of Part 3. -
Did it before I even saw your comment. Heath took these pics just before they opened the new store, which is right off the downtown square--the city's taking over their old location for a transportation center, but the new place is even better. It's right down the street from the Bluebird, a bar which opened around '73 (were you still there? can't remember when you told me you left B-town) and featured some dynamite jazz in its first few years (including a legendary Mingus gig), kinda degenerated into mostly bad covers bands throughout the 80s and 90s, and which now is drawing some good indie rock acts, who often drop into Landlocked and blow hundreds of $$ on vinyl and turntables.

I'll sing their praises once again for those who sometimes pass through Bloomington, IN or live nearby--Landlocked Music is an excellent store, especially if you're a vinyl fiend. The jazz CD section is small but full of excellent and interesting new and used material. All in all, it's a great place for discoveries.
