A little recommendation to Mosaic
ghost of miles replied to a126366184's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Great suggestions... there's been some kind of legal hang-up, I think, with the Jamal Argo material. I'd really like to see that Mulligan set; I've tracked down some of that material (including even the dreaded IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, JOIN 'EM, which IMO isn't as bad as it's made out to be--although granted, CJB it ain't). -

You beat me to it... didn't he make that one for his mum?

We've gotten a promo, and I've listened to a couple of the tracks, but didn't want to proceed further. Liked what I heard of Wilder's playing, but... well, I'm not sure it's the unmitigated disaster that some on Yahoo Songbirds proclaim it to be, but I haven't had the heart to finish listening to it yet. Everybody wants it to be halfway decent, and I surely do too; I mean, for me, Anita ranks behind only Billie, I think, when it comes to favorite women jazz singers. Might be one for the diehard fans and completists, though.

organissimo on NPR's Open Mic
ghost of miles replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
I just stumbled across this trying to Google my way back to the forum (was having temporary trouble with access). Somehow I missed it the first time around... congrats, guys! (And congrats to Mark Sheldon, too, whose photo NPR used) -
See this thread... Allegro sale 50% off on all Storyville titles (and free shipping on orders over $50).

lazaro vega in rare form
ghost of miles replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
But that's his standard form! Jazz radio's lucky to have him. -
I've noticed that as well. Also, searches are increasingly hard to perform... a lot of times I'm getting "page not found" messages, etc. Right now I was trying to find the old "AAJ is down" thread, as I can't access their bulletin board.

"The Subterraneans" this week on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
This program will be re-airing this weekend at 11:05 p.m. EST on WFIU and 9 p.m. Central Time on WNIN-Evansville. You can hear it right now, though, as it's already archived. Next week: "Live in London: Sonny Rollins."- 14 replies

That site is totally addictive.

Have you heard when this is airing? I'd like to check it out. I don't think the publicity packet gave specific dates--just said that the program would be widely available for distribution to radio stations. You might want to e-mail WBGO (Thurston Briscoe's their programming director) and ask when they plan to air it, so that you could hear it through their website. I know that we're going to try to pick it up for WFIU.

Another Reason to Listen to Night Lights WFIU
ghost of miles replied to BeBop's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
We need to start printing ourselves some Mosaic funny money. Or Box Bucks... or something. Glad some of the shows have helped out on that trigger-pulling process--now if I could just get Mosaic to link to the show--or to become a national sponsor... -
Excommunicate this man at once!! At the very least, banish him to the Blue Note Europe Bulletin Board, where he may meditate upon his heresies... oops, doesn't exist anymore, does it? There's definitely a Blue Note fetish, but it doesn't bug me much... I think people who hit a saturation point move on to other labels/musicians as well. I just wish the modern Blue Note was a bit hipper (much as I like Moran, Osby, and some of the others currently being recorded).

WBGO's produced a one-hour radio special to go along with it, and I think McCoy Tyner will be playing some dates in June associated with this release as well.

If anybody has ever tried to listen to the 8/14/04 "When Russell Met Baker" program (featuring George Russell's circa-1960 recordings, which incorporated David Baker's Indianapolis hard-bop group), it's finally available, along with an info page: When Russell Met Baker We'll probably air this again later this summer when the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra comes back to town, but for now it's available online... Mostly music from STRATUSPHUNK, AT THE FIVE SPOT, and KANSAS CITY.

Right on--I've had nothing but incredibly positive experiences with phone orders from JRM. (Half the time I feel guilty b/c I'm yakking too much about the music I'm ordering.) I think Eric's post about indie stores is pretty spot-on, too. A friend of mine just opened an independent store here in Bloomington called Landlocked Records. So far he's mostly catering to vinyl fiends, indie-rock and jazz fans, and just about anybody who wants to eschew the Borders circuit. He's willing to special-order anything, and gives decent prices too (I just bought the Nat Cole Bear Family box through him). Also incredibly knowledgeable about music and loves to talk about it with people. He has one partner and no payroll at this point, though he may hire a part-timer soon; most importantly, he's worked in indie stores before and has a ton of friends who are making a point of buying there and spreading the word about the place. So I think he's going to make it, but on the basis of personality, location, good customer service, and low overhead--a combination not easy to achieve.

I'm definitely driving up if you guys get booked into the Kitchen... we need to turn the heat up on that place! I'm also sure that our own Joe (Joe Bourne, our weekday afternoon jazz DJ) would talk up the show and play your guys' CDs on his program. And you'd probably get a lot of support from WICR in Indy, too, considering how much they played THIS IS THE PLACE.

"Jivin' With the DJs" this week on Night Lights
ghost of miles replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Conover's already on the drawing board, with a title that sort of plays on the theme of "Jivin' With the DJs"--which is now archived. -

Actually, didn't that originate in Marxist circles? The term, I mean.

Hey, when it comes to obnoxious legislation, enemy of my enemy is my friend, strange bedfellows, and all that. But we appreciate your concern!
