  1. The box came this week, and my wife & I watched OUT OF THE PAST last night. Man, has it held up... and did Robert Mitchum ever have a better role? Kind of like Bogart in THE MALTESE FALCON, where you just can't imagine anybody else in that part after you see it. Looking forward to watching everything else in the noir set over the coming weeks... late summer is a great time to watch such flicks IMO. Still hoping that THE BIG STEAL surfaces eventually on DVD as well.
  2. Re-reading David Halberstam's SUMMER OF '49, a wonderful baseball book about the Yankees-Red Sox pennant race that year.
  3. Is THE LAST SET material that's different from TRIO? I was under the impression that TRIO contained all of the work that Twardzik had recorded for PJ as a leader.
  4. I missed the start of the NPR story, and I had a feeling this might be why they were talking about him: Bill Randle dies
  5. All Things Considered is running a feature right now on a DJ named Bill Randle, who was the first to feature Elvis on a national TV show (not Ed Sullivan, as many believe), among other accomplishments. Article on Randle here; I'll post a link to the NPR story as soon as it appears on the website.
  6. Tonight on "Night Lights," it's singer Jackie Paris... the first performer to ever record a vocal version of "Round Midnight," a sometime collaborator with Charles Mingus, and a generally underappreciated, overlooked artist even among aficionados. I'll be playing the above-mentioned tracks along with selections from his Brunswick LP SKYLARK and his Impulse album THE SONG IS PARIS. On WFIU tonight around 11:10 (9:10 on the West Coast, 12:10 on the East).
  7. I have the Hampton V. 1/2 and a handful of others. Would esp. like to find the Hines...
  8. Alfred, Sent you a PM re: the Ran Blake SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR.
  9. Keep on marching to your own beat!
  10. David, It overlaps significantly with THE SECRET BROADCASTS--in fact, it's basically THE SECRET BROADCASTS plus an extra disc of material. That said, it's prime Army Air Force Band stuff. (I've been on a bit of a kick lately... you can blame our good friend Jim Sangrey for sparking my interest!)
  11. A Bloomingtonian, he. How can I dare defy the Roth? The Farlow set is on its way...
  12. Another vote for ALABAMA CONCERTO. I featured this on my community radio Juneteenth program several weeks ago... Larry's description is dead-on. You'll enjoy, Brownian Motion.
  13. We were at 21st and Talbott... fortunately we never caught a stray bullet from Dodge City!
  14. Thanks much to you too, Linn. Agreed that it's a difficult program-length to pull off... sometimes I may end up doing two-parters, although I'd like to generally avoid them. Anyway, any feedback, positive or negative, is welcome. Say, I think my avatar knows your avatar! Got any violent enemies you need me to lay waste to?
  15. You can't right-click and "save target as"? I'm backed up on CD-R committments, but lemme know if you still can't download 'em... I can try to burn you a copy sooner or later.
  16. I just posted this question to the Coltrane list, but thought I'd ask here as well: any info on what's happened to the Church of St. John in San Francisco? I know that several years ago it had to vacate its storefront setting... now I can no longer find an active webpage for it.
  17. Holy smoke! (So to speak...)
  18. It's a set that rewards repeated listenings, I've found. And yeah, the singer on those two vocal tracks--very enjoyable. Was his name Big Miller? According to AMG, there's a statue of him in Edmonton... Does Brookmeyer still post occasionally on Jazz Corner?
  19. Hey Rachel, I used to live close to 23rd & New Jersey--we had fireworks year round! I actually did get used to hearing gunfire at night while I was falling asleep...
  20. I am not, however, a master saxophonist and/or jazz sage & all-around good guy w/a gift for empathy & insight. Got such a long way to go... I just consider myself lucky to be married to Ms. B.
  21. And many more, my friend! Best birthday wishes from the land of J.J....
  22. Has the radio interview that she did with Mike Wallace in 1956 ever come out on LP or CD? I'll look into those ESP CDs... BTW, working on this program has given me reason to re-visit Donald Clarke's WISHING ON THE MOON. It's a top-notch bio of Billie; Clarke was able to get access to Linda Kuehl's archive, although he encountered problems that certainly confirm Chris' post. I highly recommend WISHING, if you want to read only one Billie bio (Stuart Nicholson's book is also worthy too, if you're a real fanatic).
  23. Damn close--it's June 26! We just celebrated... as I gather you did. Say, you're not a Sagitarius, are you? B)
  24. Up for Bing & Glenn in another couple of minutes.
  25. Well, I am married to a lovely and talented woman named Brenda (no joke!)--guess I'm already there.
