  1. Don't annoy us further! I'm pretty sure we've had such a thread... I remember some previous discussion. Saw 'em on the MOVING PICTURES tour when I was 15 and stoned out of my gourd. My freshman year in high school "Spirit of Radio" seemed to be on the local album-rock FM station every morning when I woke up. Didn't follow them much after SIGNALS, but still retain a fondness for that 1976-82 period of their work.
  2. Found this pic while I was searching for something else in the NY Times American experience archive: On another note, this was the first time I had to use the "any date" option in the search function when I went to re-locate a topic for which I was looking... yikes!
  3. Wolff, the recently-reissued VME AFTER HOURS WITH MISS D is one small-group date. I just picked it up as a freebie through BMG. Ya know, I picked up THE BEST IN BLUES about a year ago or so and just got around to listening to it today. I already have some of this material, but what a great compilation this CD is! Lately, when it comes to classic jazz singers, I find Dinah overtaking Billie in my listening habits... this may just be a reflection of the considerable time I've spent listening to Billie's entire catalogue, whereas I'm still discovering Dinah's album by album.
  4. "This is unbelievable!" I was running the board when it was on.
  5. Sumatra coffee (black).
  6. Healthy Choice "Beef Merlot"--sorta yum!
  7. Found used yesterday for $7 apiece... Lee Konitz w/Metropole Orchestra, SAXOPHONE DREAMS (still sealed!) Clifford Jordan, THE ADVENTURER ... just ordered Jean Goldkette, GOLDKETTE BANDS 1924-28 (Timeless). Now on the wagon till July 1.
  8. Two of the Thornhill Heps that I have include Lee: 1948 1947 Great to have in & of themselves... there may be a more targeted collection out there that focuses exclusively on the pieces in which LK solos.
  9. Berigan, quality on THE STRANGER was okay, what you'd expect for $7. Another one in that series I want to pick up is SCARLET STREET (1945), another noir title with Edward G. Robinson... Last night watched NIGHT AT THE OPERA and DRACULA (orig. Lugosi version) from newly-arrived boxsets. Sound on DRACULA wasn't very good, although watching it with the 1999 Phillip Glass score (performed by Kronos Quartet) was actually pretty cool. Sometimes those modern scores imposed on old movies don't work well for me... but in this case, the fit was good. Tonight it's DRACULA (Spanish version) and maybe a Wolfman flick.
  10. John le Carre, SMILEY'S PEOPLE.
  11. Wesbed, do you have the late 1940s LK recordings with the Thornhill band? Some great stuff there as well... Been awhile since I listened to BIRTH OF THE COOL, but how much does Lee solo on that record?
  12. Found this sealed for $7 yesterday, Jim. Thanks much for the rec! Am listening to it right now...
  13. "Hi, ma... sit, hairball!! HILL STREET BLUES had a bunch of 'em.
  14. Such a legendary episode now! Man, I remember how worried everybody was in my fifth-grade class about Fonzie's motorcycle jump (was that the end of season two?). By the time the shark jump came about... well, "Happy Days" had already jumped the shark.
  15. Outrageous, isn't it? Maybe we can work out some kind of double-bonus system with Mike.
  16. According to A.O. Scott's NY Times review, in one scene a tornado wipes out the Capitol Records building...
  17. I'm not going to have time--at work just about every day--but I'm kind of in the mood for an Irwin-Allen-type disaster flick w/an environmental twist and will probably try to catch it next week. Of course, I had a similar desire back in 1996 and ended up seeing INDEPENDENCE DAY w/my father-in-law--my gawd, what an awful movie!
  18. Heads-up for holiday shoppers--the "Buy 3, get 1 free" sale ends after this weekend.
  19. May have been mentioned earlier in the thread (I haven't read the whole damn thing ), but Borders is still conducting a "Buy any 3 jazz CDs, get the 4th one free" sale--I think it runs through this weekend. Last night I picked up the new RVG of Jimmy Smith's ROCKIN' THE BOAT, Carmen McRae's SINGS GREAT AMERICAN SONGWRITERS, Charles Mingus' REINCARNATION OF A LOVEBIRD (yes! finally have all 4 Candids), and Sarah Vaughan's AT MR. KELLEY'S.
  20. Yes, thanks, Guy! Those 60s BN recordings of McLean/Moncur/Hutcherson remain among my favorite jazz albums of alltime. Must have been a joy to see them playing together in any form...
  21. Stanley Cowell, BRILLIANT CIRCLES. And amen to Sonny Criss on Prestige!
  22. In addition to Dmitry's dead-on recommendation, I'd also suggest the posthumous NIGHT BIRD SONG, which was recorded in 1992. If you really get into Chapin, pick up the ALIVE compilation that the Knitting Factory put out, which includes both records & much more. Nice to see some Thomas Chapin discussion around here! I'd better start hanging out in the "Funny Rat" thread, I guess...
  23. Wow--darker than YANKEE?
  24. "One never knows, do one?" Article by Gary Giddins on Waller (as well as Glenn Miller) here.
  25. Double that wow and welcome! MY PEOPLE is an album I often play on the radio during Black History Month in February. And I'll have to pull out the Dolphy Prestige box tonight and re-visit the Latin jazz date.
