Yes, weren't these made under the name Uptown Hall Quartet & Sextet? Some of them show up on the MISSING CHAPTERS Glenn Miller series, but I'd love to find a CD that groups them all together.

Yeah, what did happen to LARRY SANDERS on DVD? The first season is good, but the show definitely got better as time went on... classic stuff. Hope it surfaces soon. My wife & I continue to enjoy watching a couple episodes of PETER GUNN each week. Will JOHNNY STACCATO ever become available on DVD? Probably not...

Didn't Rivers get a Grammy nomination for one of the BMG big-band records? I was always amused by the thought of him attending the festivities (I'm sure he didn't)--talk about a holy man stepping into the temple of Babylon!

Wow, Chuck, that must have been quite a night! I met Steve Swell last year one afternoon when I was sitting in for our regular DJ & Swell was in town for a gig... nice guy and good music to boot. That Altschul CD is quite fine--I second John B.'s recommendation. I saw Ullman here a couple years ago in a group w/George Schuller, but can't recall the name right now.

In addition to the other worthy titles mentioned here (particularly the Guralnick and CENTRAL AVENUE SOUNDS), you might want to take a gander at Rick Kennedy's LITTLE LABELS, BIG SOUND. Kennedy wrote a very good book about Gennett (JELLY ROLL, BIX & HOAGY); here's the Publishers' Weekly description of LITTLE LABELS: And Maxwell Davis rules!

I just put a used copy of McPhee & Drake's EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION on hold at a local record shop. Any opinions on that particular outing?

Posted this in another thread, but Jim Gallert, co-author (with Lars Bjorn) of a very cool Detroit jazz history book called BEFORE MOTOWN, has joined the board as JamesJazz. Jim's a longtime Michigan jazz DJ & very cool guy (interviewed him & Lars for a two-part radio special a couple of years ago) who's also involved with a new website: DetroitMusicHistory Welcome, Jim!

I'm going to do a show on Paris for my new radio program; with luck it will air on Saturday, July 10. I have the Mingus material and have ordered a Savoy CD that has the early version of ROUND MIDNIGHT; also have the LP with Moss. Does anybody have a copy of JACKIE PARIS SINGS LYRICS OF IRA GERSHWIN that they could trade to me for blank CD-Rs or something else that's OOP? I'll post a link to the program when it airs...

Talk of the Ferlinghetti Fantasy re-issue has put me in mind of occasionally playing some spoken-word pieces on my new late-night jazz program... what's the "word" on Ken Nordine? His "Best of Word Jazz" is supposed to be pretty good, but I'll be damned if I can find a copy for less than $35 on the Net.
