  1. I've wanted to pick this one up for a long time... I'll look for your name when I do.
  2. My Riverside LP of George Russell's 'Stratusphunk' has indeed liner notes by Chris Albertson I just got David Young and David Baker to both autography my CD of it... didn't realize that Chris wrote the liner notes, as I haven't read them in a long time! Just makes it that much cooler. I'm about to start writing liner notes for a 2-CD anthology of Indiana jazz that I'm putting together, and I'm a bit nervous about it... so Organissimo is a good place for me to hang out, surrounded by all these talented vets.
  3. That's great news if the Mulligan set is doing so well; didn't Cuscuna say they'd look into releasing some of the live material if this one succeeded? Hey Wesbed, the New Orleans set appears to finally be gone! Glad I got one.
  4. I love this album! Drake's solo during the title track always makes me stop and listen a second time. As much as I enjoy hearing Drake with Brotzmann, it is nice to hear him stretch out with someone different. Another great disc is his duo with Borah Bergman on Soul Note. This disc doesn't seem to get a lot of mention but it is fantastic! I don't know of any other Drake / pianist duets off the top of my head, which is too bad. This disc smokes! Thanks for the rec, John B... got a PM from another member who really liked it as well. I'm such a Drake junkie that I wasn't too worried about buying it... also like McPhee a great deal. Looking forward to giving it a listen when I get home tonight. That R. Blake CD sounds good, too--I'll keep an eye out for it.
  5. Joe McPhee/Hamid Drake, EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION (used) Gil Evans, THERE COMES A TIME (used) Louis Armstrong/Duke Ellington, PARIS BLUES (is this OOP?)
  6. Anybody continuing to have problems with e-mail? Another board member tried to contact me through the e-mail option, and I never received the messages...
  7. They are. I got to interview him last year when he played Bear's Place here in Bloomington; cool guy. Only had enough time to talk about his Indpls. experience, but I think our regular jazz DJ got to chat w/him about recording w/Freddie & Coltrane. He also goes by the name Killer Ray Appleton.
  8. Man, if Contreras starts pitching like this consistently now that his family's here... look out, major leagues! ContrerasW8-1
  9. Hmmm... hadn't heard this about Brooks, but I don't know enough to say one way or the other. Certainly have heard it about Orrin Keepnews, though!
  10. Yep, I ordered that one last week, Mobleytime... it will make the cut.
  11. Brooks did a lot of work on the recent 3-CD Jack Purvis set, which is just a treasure trove for those of us with a yen for the mystery man from Kokomo.
  12. That's an amazing story, Chris! I'd love to hear that coin-machine recording... wow.
  13. Thanks for the tip, Brownie. Does she talk much about her life and/or her music on it?
  14. Is there much, or any? I know on the Verve CARNEGIE HALL cd it's somebody else reading from LADY SINGS THE BLUES... there's that 4-CD BILLIE HOLIDAY STORY, which contains a 2-CD "audio biography," but I don't know if it contains any interview segments with her or not.
  15. Also looking for CD-Rs (no need for covers--track listing/personnel only would be swell) of SKYLARK and THE SONG IS PARIS so that I can do a program on Paris. Up for help on Jackie Paris. Will work for CD-Rs. B)
  16. I love you, man! (Well, you know what I mean... )
  17. I also noticed that Larry Kart's forthcoming book, JAZZ IN SEARCH OF ITSELF, is listed as well for late-summer/early autumn.
  18. Yes, weren't these made under the name Uptown Hall Quartet & Sextet? Some of them show up on the MISSING CHAPTERS Glenn Miller series, but I'd love to find a CD that groups them all together.
  19. Just noticed this on Alan's site: Isn't Chambers the one who put up the long biographical essay about RT on the web? In any case, this is welcome news... I was already planning to do a program about Twardzik & will now wait till I've read the book!
  20. ALL IN THE FAMILY season 3 on the way: AllintheFamily3
  21. Well, that's what I figured. I think this is the article to which you're referring. I bought LARRY SANDERS 1--did my part!
  22. Also looking for CD-Rs (no need for covers--track listing/personnel only would be swell) of SKYLARK and THE SONG IS PARIS so that I can do a program on Paris.
  23. Pre-ordered the noir box mentioned above, as well as THE BIG CLOCK and THIS GUN FOR HIRE. Waiter, make mine hardboiled...
  24. Yeah, what did happen to LARRY SANDERS on DVD? The first season is good, but the show definitely got better as time went on... classic stuff. Hope it surfaces soon. My wife & I continue to enjoy watching a couple episodes of PETER GUNN each week. Will JOHNNY STACCATO ever become available on DVD? Probably not...
  25. Didn't Rivers get a Grammy nomination for one of the BMG big-band records? I was always amused by the thought of him attending the festivities (I'm sure he didn't)--talk about a holy man stepping into the temple of Babylon!
