Posted this in another thread, but Jim Gallert, co-author (with Lars Bjorn) of a very cool Detroit jazz history book called BEFORE MOTOWN, has joined the board as JamesJazz. Jim's a longtime Michigan jazz DJ & very cool guy (interviewed him & Lars for a two-part radio special a couple of years ago) who's also involved with a new website: DetroitMusicHistory Welcome, Jim!

I told Jim Gallert, co-author of BEFORE MOTOWN and a longtime Michigan jazz DJ, about Organissimo, and he registered yesterday morning. I noticed today that his membership is still validating--does the process usually take that long?

I'm going to do a show on Paris for my new radio program; with luck it will air on Saturday, July 10. I have the Mingus material and have ordered a Savoy CD that has the early version of ROUND MIDNIGHT; also have the LP with Moss. Does anybody have a copy of JACKIE PARIS SINGS LYRICS OF IRA GERSHWIN that they could trade to me for blank CD-Rs or something else that's OOP? I'll post a link to the program when it airs...

Talk of the Ferlinghetti Fantasy re-issue has put me in mind of occasionally playing some spoken-word pieces on my new late-night jazz program... what's the "word" on Ken Nordine? His "Best of Word Jazz" is supposed to be pretty good, but I'll be damned if I can find a copy for less than $35 on the Net.

Actually, Warne was already on my 40-shows-and-growing list. And some others on the Nessa team are looking good for making the cut as well... That Bird/Diz Town Hall CD is a lock, I'll tell you that much! Don't know yet whether we'll be up the Michigan way this summer or not, though we'd like to be... I'd thought about motoring up for the Organissimo Holland gig on July 15 (my mom went to Hope, so I always like tooling around Holland anyway--esp. this year). With the show on the agenda now, such a trip might be less likely, but I'll definitely drop you a line if we're coming. You think time & weather are bad? We oughta start a "worst of PSAs" thread!

But I distinctly remember hearing some Gilmore solos on the original LP. And the AMG review (I know, I know ...) says "Gilmore's strong blowing complements Morgan very well". My memory may be getting a little rusty anymore, though, and I don't have a copy here to check. Gilmore does solo on the CD re-issue. There are JG solos on the title track, "Waltz for Ruth," and at least one other number. Several tracks, however, are brief & have fades, which indicates that other solos may have been edited out.

I played some of his early tracks w/Mingus on the radio last night... couldn't run down a copy of CHANGES TWO, though, dammit. We have that live duo album at WFIU--I'll give it a listen. Even among cult-followers Paris seemed to have only a cult following, know what I mean? Wonder if Mosaic could ever do anything with the material that he left behind.

Bol, I'm glad you enjoyed the Artie Shaw segment--I was actually a bit anxious about how that program would sound. Regarding Gerry Mulligan, he is close--very close--to the heart of the show.

Mosaic did have a Lunceford Decca set on the drawing board, several years ago... shortly before Universal slammed the door on them for awhile. From what I've heard, it's very unlikely that it will ever be done, even though Universal has since given Mosaic the keys to the vaults on occasion. Isn't there some kind of licensing headache w/the Lunceford Deccas that goes beyond Universal? Maybe one of us should drop Stamford a line & find out for sure... PFunkJazz, there actually is a Johnny Smith Mosaic--unless you're referring to recordings he did for other labels. In addition to the many excellent suggestions already made, I've been lobbying for a Herb Pomeroy Big Band Select, covering the four EMI-owned albums that he did in the late 1950s: 1955 Jazz in a Stable Transition 1957 Life is a Many Splendered Gig Roulette 1958 Band in Boston United Artists 1958 Detour Ahead United Artists E-mailed this suggestion to Mosaic, and got a reply from MC saying "Risky, but tempting." Hope they decide to take the risk!

More news from same friend: Granted, the later Mummy movies tend to be pretty bad, but I may still give that set a chance, even though I already have the Karloff... I've been enjoying the box w/Dracula/Frankenstein/the Wolfman quite a bit this summer.

It's going to be a late-Saturday night program, airing at 11 p.m. (midnight from October-April), one hour long, following "Portraits in Blue." I have a tentative title and theme, as well as an idea of the show's sensibility... more to follow, but thanks once again to the many posters here whose knowledge of & love for jazz is so inspiring!

Yes, the hell with this egalitarian business! Howza bout "Organissimo Insider" and "Organissimo Pioneer" categories, etc.? You know--backstage passes to party with the band, access to "secret" parts of the site, and, for the really big spenders, the creation of honorary forums named after them? B)
