  1. I keep thinking "Summertime," but then I always seem to hear a version of it that sounds just a bit different, just a bit more interesting--nonetheless, I still find myself wishing a five-year-shelf plan upon it.
  2. Dan, would that be Barr McClellan's BLOOD, POWER & MONEY by any chance? The author is the father of Bush spokesperson Scott McClellan. He offered a terse no-comment when asked about the book at a White House press conference. BTW, where's the CIA in your poll? Or do they go under the O. Stone "warmongers" category? Two well-done (IMO) fictional recreations of events leading up to the JFK assassination are Don DeLillo's LIBRA and James Ellroy's AMERICAN TABLOID.
  3. Freddie Hubbard, HUBCAP (RVG edition) Carmen McRae, BIRDS OF A FEATHER Hampton Sisters, A JAZZ TRIBUTE Wes Montgomery, COMP. W/LIONEL HAMPTON Joe Williams, THAT HOLIDAY FEELING (disappointing--glad it was only 5 bucks) Gerry Mulligan Mosaic (disc 1--starting my third time through the box)
  4. Dean Young (who used to live here in Bloomington), Paul Celan, Ingeborg Bachmann, Rilke, Hart, Crane, & some of the radical proletarian poets of the 30's whom Alan Wald has been championing in recent years. I also like Kevin Young, a poet who now teaches here at IU. I go through phases w/poetry; haven't had one in awhile and feel another coming on. The Library of America has begun an American Poets series and will be publishing three more volumes next spring. Currently reading Alan Furst's DARK STAR.
  5. It may have been on the 1990 CD release, actually. I know this only because I was hunting around for a jazz version of "Happy Birthday" last year (don't ask!) and came across a listing for Elvin doing it at the Lighthouse. When I checked my Mosaic box, however, there was a note saying that it had been left off the set... I think it's just the crowd singing to him, actually. I'm sure that Cuscuna & co. felt pretty safe in leaving it off the box.
  6. There's an odd case here, I think, of the LP containing something not on the Mosaic set: the crowd singing "Happy Birthday" to Elvin. Not that that's a primary reason for going the vinyl route here...
  7. I didn't see that sale on the website either. I recently cancelled my membership and signed back on with the return invitation offer--it really is a great deal if you work it right (waiting to buy your obligation until it's a "Buy 1, get 3 free" month, etc.). Holiday jazz fans take note: Joe Williams' THAT HOLIDAY FEELIN' is currently in the bargain bin for $1.99 plus shipping.
  8. I dibs Ornette's bitter, tap-dancing progeny.
  9. Yeah, just got an e-mail about this. With the Television re-issues already on my Christmas list, looks like some Rhino product will be dropping through my chimney come Dec. 25.
  10. Same thing here, Lazaro. I played it on July 4th this summer & got several phone inquiries. Amazing what Duke does w/it in what, 4 minutes? 5?
  11. Terence Faherty, KILL ME AGAIN. He's an Indianapolis mystery writer, known best for his Owen Keane series (involving a failed seminarian); this is a re-print of the debut of his Scott Elliott character, a former actor & WWII vet who's trying to pick up the pieces of his career by working as a private investigator in late-40's Hollywood. The plot concerns an attempt to make a sequel to a Casablanca-style movie (Faherty originally used the actual movie and the actual stars, but was told by the Bogart estate that he couldn't). Also leafing through some books about the Negro baseball leagues.
  12. I'll have to check when I'm at home, but I think Lewis Porter lists an audience tape of the sextet w/Montgomery in the back of his Coltrane bio.
  13. Collectors' Choice has it listed for $64.95, and it would qualify for free shipping right now. I'm trying to hold off to see what cdwolf charges for it (he doesn't have it in-stock yet).
  14. Of all the great suggetions listed above, I wish most for "Moontrane," "Ghetto Walk," and "How Soon Is Now."
  15. It just zoomed to the top of my b-day/Christmas list, that's for sure!
  16. Unreleased live Ellington from that era? But it all looks good!
  17. I'll buy!
  18. Excellent, Dan! I hang onto a lot of those interviews & will be sure to keep yours w/Higgins once it comes out.
  19. ...a topic which has drawn my interest of late, particularly in regards to a project of mine. I seem to remember it surfacing on the old BNBB and am wondering if anybody has books, online sites, etc. to recommend. I've come across a book called ONLY THE BALL WAS WHITE, which looks promising, if a bit dated--looking perhaps for a more contemporary treatment of the subject.
  20. Listening to this right now & liking it very much. Man, such vitality to this guy's playing!
  21. Up. Is anyone familiar with this incarnation of the Coltrane Quartet plus? I often wonder what made Wes' sound a likely candidate. If anyone has heard this group, or has an online source describing the music, I'd be very appreciative if they'd post here. I know it's a topic that's come up numerous times, definitely on the old BNBB and probably here as well. Supposedly there's a low-quality audience tape of a 40 or 45-minute set w/Coltrane and Montgomery from late '61 (Monterey, perhaps?). Supposedly it's not as impressive as we might think. I'd certainly like to hear it if it ever surfaces (somebody on the BNBB reported they'd been offered a copy of this tape for the low, low price of $2,500), but I'm not expecting anything amazing. It's kind of difficult for me to imagine Wes and that late '61 quintet really meshing together--in a way, though, that does pique my curiosity, just to hear how it didn't work as much as how it might have worked.
  22. Oops, yeah, I overlooked that one... Will probably have to pick this one up. Our local guy who carries Okka stuff is hospitalized indefinitely, so maybe I'll take the Nessa train. Intrigued to hear KV in a purely solo setting.
  23. Here's to the vets. We here may furiously debate our nation's military policies both pro & con, but I'm grateful to all of those who have served. In my own family my grandfather fought in WWII, my uncle fought in Vietnam, and my step-aunt is currently serving in Iraq. And a special salute to Jazzmoose and all others here on the board who have done time in the armed forces.
  24. On Veterans' Day, Weizy, a special birthday salute to you from one of your favorite American soldiers: He still wants to give you that ambassadorship to Vienna, even after you said those nasty things about him! Maybe for your next birthday, which should fall a few days after the election. In all seriousness, Weizen, I hope you have a wonderful day spinning JRVGs, drinking quality beers, and savoring whatever other aspects and blessings of your life that make you happy. Cheers!
  25. (Playing piano) "You look like 500, but you're only 44!" Or something like that... In any case, have a good one, man.
