  1. Where there's fish, there's CHiPs!
  2. I wonder if they're ever going to get around to doing that Buddy Rich biopic that's been in Limbo forever: "Miguel Ferrer is set to start with the K-Street and Ocean’s Eleven combo of Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney producing. The movie is expected to have a 2004 release date..."
  3. Timely post - I just got Elvis' Imperial Bedroom and Punch the Clock CDs yesterday. I've only listened to the Punch bonus disc and there's a lot of great material on it - live cuts, rehearsal tapes, demos - even a cover of a Yoko Ono song! But the best part is that the booklets for each CD are like volumes in a book, with EC telling stories (most of them involving alcohol) about what was going on during the periods that the original albums were recorded and released. Unfortunately, the Armed Forces booklet had a cliffhanger ending with Bebe Buell showing up on EC's London doorstep, and my re-reissue of Get Happy didn't continue the story. The Nashville stories about the Almost Blue recording sessions are great. When EC writes his autobiography, it should be a very entertaining read.
  4. Happy Birthday!
  5. my money's on the odds that batitista's not even aware of that recording... Or Sadao Watanabe's 1985 release, Parker's Mood.
  6. Off-thread, but a stupid question/smart response just the same: Back in '82, I was riding around with a carload of friends. One guy was digging through a box looking for a cassette tape. After passing over Foghat, Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, etc... he pulls out a cassette of Beethoven (not sure why it was in there). He reads name on the cassette and says, "Who the hell is Beet-thoven?" Another guy in the car snaps back, "You know - he played rhythm guitar for Nugent: Derek St. Beet-thoven." First guy never had (or got) a clue. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...
  7. Happy Birthday!
  8. What goes up, Must come down, Spinning Wheel, yada yada yada...
  9. I thought this one would be short, but it turned out to be rather long...
  10. Fighting AIDs is a very difficult battle to wage. On the other hand, fighting hungry people is quite easy because they're too weak to put up much of a struggle.

    Just Wondering

I did a Google Image Search for "greatest jazz artist" and this picture popped up. The banjo. Who knew?
  12. I think I showed up late. Happy Birthday!
  13. Dances & Ballads, was my introduction to the WSQ, and I still consider it to be their finest recording. I've seen Lake, Bluiett, and Murray in concert, but never got to see Julius Hemphill (RIP). Have to recommend Hemphill's Coon Bid'ness (aka Reflections) - a classic of the loft scene genre. For more Julius Hemphill recommendations, please see The Essential Julius Hemphill list on Amazon.com.
  14. Happy Birthday AfricaBrass!
  15. Ray Charles would break out the alto sax during the occasional concert. Jaki Byard recorded on trumpet, sax, cello, vibes, and guitar. Charles Moffett played trumpet and vibes with Ornette.
  16. Believe it or not, Keith Jarrent on soprano sax.
  17. My favorite sitar face:
  18. That explains all of the utterances on his recordings. Saw Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette in concert. Some dumbass' cellular phone rang - J stopped playing, P & D looked over to see if they were walking off. J waited awhile, then picked up where he stopped. Tense moment.
  19. They probably would have communicated a little more if Hallmark made "Happy Birthday, Biological Happenstance" and "Happy Holidays, Deeply Miserable Human Being" cards.
  20. Avoid this one for that, and many other reasons.
  21. Aww, shit.
  22. Not well. I got my ass kicked by a 10-year old. Twice.
  23. Happy Birthday Nate! Keep the music reviews coming!
