  1. Happy Birthday!
  2. One hundred and five reviews so far - most of them get 4 or 5 stars because I usually only review the recordings that I support. I try to review the ones that don't have many reviews, hoping to sway a reader into checking out that artist. If my 5 star rating and good word writing results in someone picking up something by Sam Rivers or Julius Hemphill then it's worth all of the effort that I put into it. Plus, I do these on company time anyway. Here's the whole heaping pile, starting with Pepper Adams, Johnny Griffen, Sam Rivers, Charles Davis, Randy Sandke, etc...
  3. You'll be a big man at the dinner table when you tell this one to your kids: Knock, knock. Who's there? Impatient cow. Impatient c---- Moo.

  7. Last night I saw a performance of Astor Piazzolla's Histoire du Tango with Eliot Fisk on guitar and Christina Smith on flute - an amazing work. A little jazzy in spots, and always interesting.
  8. I hope he's got the won-tons not to let them take him alive.

  12. "They called it a sax o' phone because in the old days - before Edison invented the telephone - people would carry a brass clarinet-type instrument around in a sack. When you needed to 'call' someone, you could play notes on the instrument and they could tell what you were saying by what notes you were playing. This was called 'phoning it in' and it was the precursor of the cellular phone. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, who used it to call his assistant, Peter Brotzmann." - Garelick
  13. "They called it Free Jazz because no one would pay to hear it. So to get customers in, the club owners would put up a sign that said 'Free Jazz'. But you still had to pay for the drinks, though." - Garelick
  14. I've got a 5th row concert ticket and a 36th row airplane ticket. I'll be flying up Friday at noon and heading back to Atlanta Saturday morning. All I can say is: this show better be fucking great!
  15. That's the only episode of "Night Music" I ever saw. Zorn on television? Damn - missed it.
